Mourning unfertilized eggs is like mourning every hair that falls off my head. If I were going bald and I don't like being bald... maybe? I also want to know... why do they make women's razors and have women shaving their legs in the commercials if women don't have hair on their legs?

@@doggytheanarchist7876 just for context, i don't want to assume they don't know how shaving works, for different people it's different yk? generally they have white women in the ads but not always, and usually they show them as women who shave every day. the hair would be thin and light and short and hardly visible, it was for me when i was shaving every day. i don't anymore but my girlfriend who shaves every day has visible body hair even just the next day.

In Healthcare, we were encouraged to start utilizing the word "vulva" to determine from "vagina" because it is medically accurate. Also, if there was a sexal assault patient, especially involving a potential court situation, using the medical definitive terms was important. It's hard to think about, but if a little girl says someone "touched their bottom" that could be misconstrued in court. Teaching the appropriate anatomical word could help a court/ lawyer be more clear in prosecution.

One of my best friends is a social worker who specializes in child welfare. His wife is a psychologist. They've taught their two year old daughter the anatomically accurate words for different body parts, and "vulva" is one of her favorite words to say. She went through a phase of telling everyone that she has a vulva (much like the kid in Kindergarten Cop). Including the people at their place of worship. It's kind of hilarious. But as a social worker who specializes in intimate partner violence and gender-based violence myself, I also know how important it really is to make sure that she has the language and understanding and comfort speaking with her parents about this as she grows up.

I absolutely love the "No passenger today? OK, remove the cushions!" Being FTM with PCOS, having a hysto because of painful periods, I can still appreciate the humor! I just looked it up for the fun of it. "The oldest woman to give birth was Erramatti Mangamma, born in 1946, currently holds the record as the oldest living woman to have given birth. She gave birth to twin girls at the age of 73 in 2019, making her the world's oldest mother at the time of the birth." Great story about leg hair: I was with a guy before I transitioned, who ran his hand over my legs and said "So smooth!" I showed him how hairy my legs were and he never said another thing the rest of the night lol

The thing you say about life expectancy in the past is also a misconception. Sure people's lives were shorter to some extent, due to medicine not being as advanced and whatnot, but people didn't all die at 30-40. This idea stems from the fact that the numbers people have in mind are an AVERAGE life expectancy, and INFANT mortality was quite high before modern medicine, which pulled the average down. And I'm not saying infants don't matter, of course, just that it's inaccurate to imagine that people had never seen someone over 60. Once you were past that infant mortality bump, people generally aged normally. I mean you could get unlucky with disease or a violent death, but not to the point that nobody ever made it to old age. You can just google random famous people throughout the ages and see for instance that Ramses II died aged 90, Charlemagne died at 72, Da Vinci at 67, Queen victoria at 81, Edison at 82, etc... or look through classic portraiture and see old people being represented.

I was born hearing impaired. It's actually an adaptation because I was born on an Island in Country Kerry Ireland. When I got hearing aids, I was shocked to discover the following. 1. People's voices are different. I always thought they were either high or low. 2. Soda pop makes noise. 3. Thunder snaps. I could hear it and feel it but the initial pop was surprising. 4. Trans-men's banana feet squeak when they run away (I found out whilst chasing a trans-man friend with a big hammer.. fun times. 5. Popcorn pops during eh, popping lol? I should have seen that one coming. 6. Sneakers actually do squeak at times. 7. Fans (as in the kind one use to cool oneself off) make swooshing noises. There's more but I can't think of any right now. Cool things about my kind of "impairment". I can hear people's hearts beating in a quiet room. I used this, as a wee girl, to find my playmates during hide and seek. I don't suffer having to listen to most people when they talk. "Sorry can't hear you." and they'd walk away. Sometimes intolerance pays off. Cheers. PS just remembered a bad thing. Hearing aids are expensive.

I can see how a banana foot would squeak though, like in a cartoon or literally from the waxy peel rubbing against certain floor types, I just... don't understand what banana feet are exactly 😂

I've never had a diagnosis of anything, and month to month it can change. However my period has symptoms on the first day that range from excruciating pain, overheating to the point I feel faint and throwing up 😑 they just put me on birth control as a teenager, and I've not been offered anything else as a solution. I'm off any birth control now, but it's a roulette on how dramatically bad my first few days will be each month

So sorry to hear you were given birth control and then just left - it's ridiculous how often that's all that is done. If you're at all able access medical care, it's worth pushing to get more from them! It took me 15 years from my first symptoms to an official diagnosis. But the more info I've got, the more options have opened up for treatment/management. And even just the peace of mind from knowing what's going on has made life easier! I'm so sorry you're dealing with this.

I'm so sorry to hear this. I've been on contraceptives / hormone treatments since my teens too, to manage hideous, unpredictable periods, weird pre-menstrual symptoms (including my immune system tanking) etc. To be honest, the progesterone injectible has been a total life-line for me, especially as I've since learned how much oestrogen affects my panoply of chronic conditions. I've been on it for about 25 years now, and am approaching menopause. But there is ZERO information out there for how to manage my hormones coming into menopause - all the "patient information" is around birth control (pretty irrelevant for a single lesbian!). There has been so little research into the specifics of hormone changes over a life-time without reference to fertility, just as there's too little research into male / sperm infertility. I'm hopeful that trans and NB folks accessing hormone therapy can teach us all more about the subtleties of our hormone panels.

this is the same for me, the pain is so bad that I throw up and pass out alternatively, dripping with sweat, for a few hours on the first day. the other seven days are less intense pain. it stops me from going to work when it comes on a work day in the morning, obviously, but I've never been diagnosed with anything and "my period" is viewed as not a good enough excuse and I've gotten disciplinary points for it before. I want to talk to my GP about getting birth control or checked or something, but I'm still living with my extremely religious parents who don't let me go to the doctors, or anywhere by myself. so it will have to wait until I've moved in with my partner

I have very random periods, I won’t get them for 4 months and then I will have them that last for 12 days with a week break and then another 8 days of blood and I physically can’t move. It’s caused by my severe cPTSD and overall anxiety and when people tell me that I’m lucky it makes me so mad, just because I don’t suffer monthly doesn’t mean I don’t suffer as much as any other person who has periods. I have a six year old and an eight year old, the fact that there are some days where I cannot move and my wife has to take care of the kids on her own is so unfair, now that she’s pregnant (yay IVF) I can’t make her do that, and I have to take care of the kids while experiencing excruciating amounts of pain that no pain meds help. I was put on birth control for a while and it did help it also made me develop blood clots which isn’t desirable. So yeah irregular periods are literally the worst.

I have a LOT of chronic pain conditions, including endo and more generalised pelvic pain, I’ve had ovarian cysts which have ruptured and get extremely painful period and ovulation pain. A lot of the time it radiates along my sides and back as well. I have thrown up, passed out and all from the pain that I have. Having chronic pain in my pelvis (which is present 24/7 not just when I’m on my period) means that my entire pelvis/lower back area is hyperalgesic (meaning the nerves are more sensitive to any type of pain or pressure). Even pressing on my abdomen/pelvis for an ultrasound or wearing tight clothes around my waist like exercise pants can cause me excruciating worse pain for days or weeks. I also have an IUD which I had to be sedated for to have it placed because just one or two uterine contractions WITHOUT a baby in there, were so painful that I passed out on the exam table at the first one. Even after the IUD was placed under sedation, the uterine spasms (similar to braxon hicks in a pregnancy) were causing me to throw up, faint despite having heavy opioid medications on board (morphine) etc. I’m not sure if I ever want kids - I have a number of health issues including my chronic pain and fatigue, mental health and am Autistic with ADHD and Sensory processing disorder so I can barely look after myself most days and I think a tiny human crying and always needing me is an idea which is very overwhelming to me. Not even including financially. But there’s a few reasons in the plus column too. The one thing that absolutely scares me to death is pregnancy/labour - I would absolutely never want to experience the pain of an actual contraction with my pain barely controlled as is and none of the medications I take (opioid and otherwise) to deal with my pain are ‘pregnancy’ safe, the same with my antidepressants. The drugs that are similar that are safe for use during pregnancy are ones I’ve already tried and that have failed so I’d be basically needing to stop all my medications for the entire pregnancy and longer if breastfeeding too - which just feels impossible because I can barely wash my hair and get out of bed as is WITH all my medications working effectively as is. Not to mention I work for myself so all my income is based on me still being able to work through a pregnancy (or possibly relying on a partner’s salary - which just seems unfairly stressful for them). Even with an epidural they are not always effective and don’t completely eliminate all the pain most of the time. They also have a very specific window (as in can’t be given too early or too late and only last a few hours not the entire labour). I am absolutely terrified that my chronic pain is just going to be completely unmanageable especially considering I already have a lot of lower back, neck/shoulder and abdo/pelvic pain - which are all things that get worse with pregnancy. I think my best option would be to have a scheduled c-section so a lot lower risk of experiencing any contractions but the local block medications they use for that don’t work well on me so I think realistically I’d probably have to be sedated for the whole procedure instead. The problem with that is that they’re literally cutting a huge opening in my pelvic area exactly where I have the worse nerve pain and hyperalgesia so the recovery from that would be brutal and would likely cause me to have worse, more permanent chronic pain in that area for the rest of my life. Pregnancy and parenthood are absolutely not for everyone and with the world getting more expensive and more dangerous for minority groups - I can definitely see that side of things. I think it’s ridiculously important to consider that a child isn’t just for 18 years but for (conceivably) the rest of your life and that you’re committing to raising a whole entire human, and that is a huge thing to do. And while I do love the concept of having a child, I honestly don’t know if that’s a commitment that I would have the resources to do right.

Ok, but… It’s generally not that people are living to older ages now than before. It’s because children’s mortality was so high that it skewed the numbers. So, people did live longer than 60, it’s just if you have 100 people and 30 of them died before the age of 5, that will lower the average life expectancy verses 100 people and 5 of them died before the age of 5.

also to add on the period subject, different people experience different periods, we mostly hear about those who experience worse symptoms, but they do exist people who experience barely any symptoms and most of their periods are painless, those do exist. So yeah they do exist people with periods that are cheerful and completely fine during that time.

the unfertilized eggs are usually reabsorb by the body, periods are mostly just the walls of the uterus. the pain is caused by the muscle contraction to get ride of its extra thick walls.

... Female fertility does drop between 35 to the 55, but not one moment to the other and it starting to drop does not mean it is a bit less likely, not impossoble to concieve until further along. Also we got way more eggs then ever could ripen over the course of a life time, but since carrying out is extreamly taxing and you need to be around for more of a decad after to raise the kid, it makes sense that there is a "limited window"

Not just Endometriosis, but Adenomyosis as well, which is something I have. I think it gets talked about less than endometriosis. For anyone reading who hasn't heard of Adenomyosis before, or who maybe has heard the word but doesn't really know what it is, I'll explain. Whereas in endometriosis, parts of the endometrium (the lining of the uterus) make its way out of the uterus and deposit usually somewhere in the abdominal/pelvic cavity and attach as lesions on the outside of internal organs (and in really bad cases can make its way elsewhere too)... In Adenomyosis that same material (bits of the endometrium) breaks through into the myometrium (the muscle wall of the uterus). Inside of that muscle wall it deposits in a similar way, creating pockets around the lesions. In both Endo and Adeno, the lesions act the same way as the endometrium that is still within the uterus - that is, they will thicken, swell, break down, and bleed, and in Adeno those pockets within the muscle cause a lot of pressure. Adenomyosis can cause quite a bulky uterus which becomes heavier. Adeno causes bad pain, heavy bleeding, and significant clotting, which often hurts more to pass as the cervix stretches.

About the "God's timing" thing when it comes to fertility issues. You can (technically) say that BUT ONLY if the person you are saying it to is highly religious and believes similarly. Otherwise you're just going to come across as pushing your believes and downplaying their struggle. Which is not what you want to do if this is a friend you're trying to be supportive/comforting.

One plausible scenario for mourning unfertilized eggs would be someone struggling with infertility, with each period being a reminder that they haven't succeeded in conceiving this month. Not something Ive personally experienced, but heard about from someone who has.

Just adding my random data point re: writing periods. At different times in my life, my experience has been different (and not because there was any clear explanation or change of because I was in, like, my Jurassic Period Era versus my Pre-Cambrian Period Era or whatever. I have never heard that periods proceed through any kind of broadly predictable life stages - until peri-menopause, maybe). For a while I got cramps that were bad enough to be physically debilitating but at least predictable. Then I got a decade+ reprieve where there was often no pain and almost never bad pain, but it was a little harder to predict. Now that I’m getting older, it’s a complete roll of the dice. For the longest time, I believed I did not get PMS because everything I knew about it basically came from sitcoms where female characters became abruptly, ferociously angry. I was in my thirties when I finally realized that I often experience a “dark night of the soul” about the same time of the month. I definitely have a real melancholic streak and PMS is not to blame for my personality, but nobody ever told me that I might feel sad or just really discouraged, rather than angry. Now I wonder how many more variations there are re: how other people experience hormonal fluctuations. Getting past the dismissive stereotypes and asking honest questions can open the door for people to finally understand themselves better. ❤

Two things, life expectancy data from the past is skewed by high infant and child mortality. Also as an older Mum, (first child at 34 and second at 40), whilst I personally didn't have issues with fertility, I did experience higher risks of complication during pregnancy and birth, particularly with my first pregnancy where I developed pre-eclampsia and haemorrhage. I also opted for additional screening for genetic conditions as there is a greater likelihood associated with maternal age.

I didn't realise until my mid 20s that I even had endometerosis. I thought that that amount of pain and bl00d was what a period was meant to be like, etc. Changing underwear 3 or 4 times a night and having to sleep on a towel to stop leaking on the bed, leaks at school or work and the pain so bad that I could barely wall due to referred back pain. Also, my stomach bloated so big that 1 of my bosses thought I was sticking it out on purpose. And I was like, nope, this massive pot belly is period bloat. I finally saw a Gyno who was very versed in this and straight away on symptoms alone knew what I had. He referred me to his surgeon friend (as he himself was almost retiring age and didn't do surgery anymore) and I had a lap. But not just day surgery like most. I was in for over 2 days. My uterus was actually attached to my bowel wall. It was so bad that the surgeon was gobsmacked. He asked how I even coped with the pain this likely caused. I again said, "I just thought that as you get bad cramps and can have very heavy flows, that it was just *my* period." I was in a lot of pain for over several weeks post op and couldn't wear even granny knickers until 2 weeks had passed. Luckily though, this meant my little sister of over 5 years younger, be booked in for a laparoscopy asap. She also had it but not as bad of course. Thankfully, our surgeon excises the endo and doesn't laser. So no scarring or further issues from that day. On top, he increased our fertility to "normal levels" as well. So we could have squishes if we desired to. I'm 40 now and on a certain "pill" for various reasons. But I still don't enjoy my period and do feel quite crappy around that time. And the PMS. Ugh.

I *always* thought I'd want and/or have at least 1 kiddo. As I got into my 30s, especially around 36, I actually realised I was quite content not having any children whatsoever. I had my furkids and they were enough work for me. So, therefore, I decided I didn't want them anymore. After a life of *really l, really* wanting them and even ending relationships with people who didn't, to absolutely no thank you. Wild.

"That's weird. Women shouldn't grow facial hair." I'm AFAB and have facial hair. Hair is not AMAB exclusive smh. I actually had a guy online react to my picture by saying, "Facial hair?" it was so weird. "Do people like boobs?" It depends on who you ask. I personally enjoy boobs on other people (not on myself. Yeet the teets!) especially small ones. Big ones weird me out a bit, which adds to my discomfort since mine are huge naturally, and I keep getting comments about them >.< "Can women function normally on periods?" When I still had them, I could, but I had bad cramps that made me cringe and sometimes feel sick. "Trust his delays. God has a plan for you. Have faith." Apparently, God's plan for me was to have a 20 lb cyst grow on my right ovary. At the same time, fibroids covered my uterus, forcing me to have a hysterectomy shortly after me and my boyfriend talked about having kids together. Now, not only am I infertile, I'm 100% sterile. Thank you, God. "Idoneo per ottenere la spedizione gratuita" is Italian for "Eligible to get free shipping" "Breast reductions go against God's plan." I don't want them reduced; I want them removed. So guess I'm good! "Passing an unfertilized egg." Do you mean... having a period that cannot be controlled, only stops during pregnancy, and can start as young as 10 years old or (in rarer cases) younger?? "Cis women don't have hair on their legs." I'm agender and have hair on my legs. So I have no room to speak, but... pretty sure everyone grows hair. If they don't have it, they shave. Would you argue that any man without facial hair is trans or has a hormone imbalance? Boing, boing, boing. "Can women operate a weed wacker?" I.. think anyone with two hands/arms could??? I'm DD, so I'm not even on that graph. Guess I'm an alien, lol. "ADHD only affects men. Don't diagnose yourself on TikTok." So, my boyfriend is ADHD, DID, and autistic. I'm self-diagnosed autistic, ADD, DID, but not from TikTok, lol. He sees things in me that his doctor pointed out in himself, so technically, my autistic boyfriend says I'm autistic and stuff. My big boobs are a curse. My sister wanted boobs and ended up nearly flat-chested (A-B cup) and didn't reach C cup until her 30s. Meanwhile, I had C cups at 15 and DD cups in my 20s. But I never wanted boobs!

Ok, so as far as mourning the loss of millions of eggs, i have a good example of something in a mass scale of mourning. I breed rats, and have been for years, and they have short (3-5) years of lifecycle. As such when one passes, which happened in a larger scale due to some bad genetic lines, we lost several of our babies in a small amount of time. You can greive in mass, it doesnt dull the pain of the loss, and each loss feels different. But i agree that mourning your eggs or for a guy mourning sperm is just a bit extreme, but you do you.

What got me about the "cis women don't have leg hair unless they also have a hormone imbalance" is that, much like with one's chromosomes, I bet the number of people walking around with atypical hormone levels who don't know it is much higher than the number of people with atypical hormones who do know it. Individual bodies have so many ways to be different from one another while also being functional enough to get through everyday life. I have leg hair and plenty of it. Maybe my hormones are completely chaotic, maybe they're the exact average, smack dab in the middle of the general population. I don't know bc I've never happened to have a doctor test that for me AND NEITHER HAS THE PERSON WHO MADE THAT POST ORIGINALLY.
