You can see the effect of the 25 year rule with the mini trucks. Brand new here they are 20,000 old ones are still 10,000 because they get sold direct to the USA now.

Honestly some of the most tempting JDM cars are the mundane ones - things like a little Daihatsu Charade hatchback for example. It's just a small manual economy hatch with a tiny fuel efficient engine, not some tuner that with ten grand in mods will blow the doors off proper sports cars, but in Japan you can get well-maintained good condition examples with only like 50,000 miles on them for dirt cheap, like five grand after import costs and fees to get one here. That's insane. It might not be super exciting to drive, but a sensible economical small practical car is sadly something you just can't buy new in this country anymore, and every affordable used example is high mileage, and likely beat to crap as it wasn't seen as anything worth taking care of when it was new - if you can even find one. But in Japan... they're plentiful, well-maintained, and not worth much. For less money than a USDM equivalent car, you can get a practical small car from Japan with lower miles, better paint, better interior, better condition overall, and better specs. And sometimes, a small practical economy car is all you really want. It'll do everything you want out of a daily driver competently and reliably while sipping fuel, and doing all of that so that your fun project cars don't have to. And the only tradeoff is that you have to sit on the wrong side of the car, and have the headlights adjusted so they're aimed properly for driving on the right side of the road :) A small price to pay for a sensible commuter car.

Sorry America Yes, you are to blame 100% As soon as the R32 GTR became legal I bought one knowing the prices would go up I had predicted this. I paid $25k NZD So probably about $18k USD. That very next week, prices went up $5k, then another $5k, and it kept going up, then covid hit and all of a sudden people were realizing that these once cheap cars, Silvias, Rx7's, etc were getting snatched up and people were looking to make profits! It started with the lower specs of R32 skylines, because now if a GTR costs X then it's the lower trims should also cost more too! And that then steam rolled to other platforms, because "What a standard GTS R32 is X amount?! Well my Rx7 is way better/nicer so it's now worth X amount more" and it carried on all because people were trying to price match. Not only that, it was no longer cheaper to import from Japan so prices were compared to what you could import. Thanks America.

I think there are many reasons for the price, the basics are supply and demand, the supply is limited, new ones are not being built, and the demand is in a way increasing, because while people always wanted them, a lot of them were kids that never had the disposable income, and now all the kids that want it are grown up and have the spending power, higher price is not a good or a bad thing, it just kind of puts it in a position that only people who really want it the most will spend the money for it. Also the other thing is the US Market is big, and the JDM is relatively small, its like having a restaurant that serves 100 people try to make food for 10000 people. With that being said, I do like Japanese cars, be it JDM or USDM Japanese cars, but I feel that with the prices now, it takes away a big talking point about Japanese cars, which was that they were affordable tuner cars. But hey, car prices here are still cheaper than where I am from so.. Can't complain too much

You can buy 14 Celsiors if you import them yourself. It's not hard. You buy from an importer you're getting hosed on price. Feel free to spend thousands of dollars you don't need to spend. Whatever as long as it keeps the prices up.

The JDM bubble has already burst. Martini is mostly sending this to true JDM fans. It's like... if people start to appreciate all last 1990s GM RWD boats (Impala, Roadmaster, Deville...), then the fool in the market wants to buy a Toyota Celsior or Lexus LS-400. And it's only buying a JDM car because of reliability and cheap parts, not for value or tradition or performance. No matter how much you put any 1000hp 2JZ on it. The american V8 still more powerful and attractive than ever. A very big "sorry, no-no" for R34s anyway...

It's actually pretty simple, the kids who grew up watching late 90s early 2k movies, TV and anime have grown up earned money and now want the things they loved as a child. Now it's 25 years later and a lot of those cars are gone and a bunch of them were never sold in the states. You have all the necessary elements for crazy prices customers desire relative rarity and people who want to make money. Every time you have some sort of lack of supply you have scalpers and the like jacking up the prices, just look at cars during covid 200k for a C8 corvette.

They didn't make a whole lot of r33's, and hype is driving up r34's which will drop in prices in 2-3 years. You can still find r32 gtr's for cheap because they made so many. For reference at the end of 2018, I paid a bit under 30k USD in Japanfor my R33 GTR but no rust on the underside or engine bay. I found the paperwork of the last owner in Japan who paid 15k USD equivalent 5 years before me in 2013. Basically I was able to put in 20k, make reliable 500awhp with the single turbo build I did 3 years ago, and I can still sell it for profit which is wild. Meanwhile I bought a dream AMG from when I was younger - a 2003 CL55. Stock it makes more power than the modded gtr and with maintenance its only cost me 15k lol. Cheaper than the engine build in the gtr. But its not the same feeling driving the AMG as driving the GTR and that's what people are chasing.

Love JDM cars. Glad to have bought a 240sx back when they were actually cheap AND you could find one with a stock engine/ intake or exhaust mods only. Now? Heck no. You need to have a lot of extra money to go through with buying one now

It's not about safety, it's about control. The big auto makers want you buying new overpriced crap, the government wants the tax money, the banks want to get money for the loan etc. If people see that they can drive a fuel efficient and fun vehicle that is not expensive to produce and also not needing all the extra crap they will want vehicles like this. My favorite cars were old cars. I loved my 1976 BMW 2002 the most of any car, and it never left me stranded.

There is a lot of back and forth on the topic of jdm. But let’s zoom out? Why do we buy any car at any price? Especially sports cars. For the way they make you feel. Porsche owners certainly don’t feel the same way Ferrari owners do. So why is one chosen over the other given the price similarities? It’s preference right? The experience you get driving a Ferrari vs a Porsche is faster different. The same as driving a Miata and 86 today. Similar power, similar price. Similar aftermarket support. So why one over the other? Hopefully you see where I am going with this. I’m not saying 75k ain’t worth it because to some it’s very much so worth it. It’s not about “oh you can get 1XXXhp from a big block and a blower” it’s a vastly difference experience dealing with big displacement supercharged, rwd vs. small displacement big turbo. The same can be said for 200whp NA Civics that weigh 2100lbs. It’s the emotions that drive the value proposition for buyers. This applies to euro spec, jdm, domestics of all ages years makes and models. 👍🏽
