Oh boy! If I may offer 1 suggestion...put drain in that corner of the garage now. That way no matter what, if water finds its way in (it will because youve now told the gremlins where it is) it will come in handy to have a floor drain. Our garage is the same & thank goodness, the little fella who we bought it from, did that. House is looking good! Remember youre tips when coming upon things like that arent boring, you never know who it will help!

The first house reno I ever watched was Matt Carikker's house ("I Bought an Abandoned Mansion") on his Off The Ranch YT channel. Of course, the first I knew of it, the build was already over so I watched the edited version of the entire build, then went back and watched individual episodes. So as soon as I saw his "I Bought an Abandoned Resort" thumbnail, I've been addicted ever since. Jenna's house is the only one I've seen that had to be almost completely deconstructed first, so I'm addicted to this one, too.

I have been doing renovation for 35 years. I can tell you that the biggest mistake you can make when rebuilding a house is believing that the person that built the house you're working on was any good at their job. People somehow believe that houses are level,square and plumb. Not even close. Understand this. Just because someone does something for a living doesn't mean they are any good at it. Also contractors do NOT believe it's their job to fix the mistakes of other contractors. An out of level slab carries straight up to the roof because no one cares. They just want their money. You're doing the right thing fixing those mistakes but you see it makes the job harder. A framer doesn't figure in the extra labor to make it level . Good thing you have free labor.

I thought my house was pretty well done (1951) until about a year after I bought it when I found some decking in the attic had not only been laid on top of a run of romex over a rafter in a couple places, but they managed to somehow sink a nail THROUGH the romex without causing a short or piercing the inner insulation. Later on I found part of the 1960's bathroom redux that added marble walls and an enameled steel tub set that tub on a bed of grout chaff... with a newer run of romex going right under the metal tub, on top of all the sharp masonry chunks. I've heard the term "hot tub" before, but never quite like that possibility... Also sometime in the 70's or early 80's someone chopped a hole in the garage floor to add a sump pump, and channeling along the basement walls to catch water intrusion. Thing is, this house is ON A HILL, and not 25 feet away the ground falls off at a foot every 6-10 feet. It needed a frickin' pipe, not a convoluted sump pump rig....

Absolutely, it takes someone who is very detailed oriented and to slow down during the building of a house to make sure it's level and plumb.

We level all walls or it would never pass inspection. From the get go its leveled from the foyndation and cimented in place then lag bolted every 2 feet (rods stick out of the foundation). We level litteraly every wall and don't remove our milion braces until the roof is sheeted. This is standard for inspections in Quebec and Ontario Canada.

Since your guys' garage foundation isn't leveled, you can install a 'channel drain' in front of your garage door. You'll have to cut a recess into the concrete, install some sort of half cylinder that fits the recess dimensions, and put a grate over it. They're easy to clean since the grates are removable, NOT inherently ugly if you get some nice hardware, and since the house is on the right and (i assume) nothing is on the left, you can guide the water left to drop off behind the garage, or even connect it with the roof gutters to combine the water and guide it to drop off behind/under the pool area. I swear it'll save you guys since the property is on a pretty gnarly grade.
@medavis
@medavis 2 күн бұрын
I left a separate comment about the grade of the garage slab causing potential water issues, and I approve this suggestion. Something's going to have to be done to get any water that gets into that back corner away from the walls and out of the garage! It's either that, or tear out the slab and repour...but I'm guessing we're past that. :D
@kyrataylor2035
@kyrataylor2035 2 күн бұрын
@@medavis I was checking the comments to see if anyone had posted about drainage for the back of the garage. My first thought when he was push-brooming the water out was to cut a drain hole (round or square) and pipe the runoff away from the garage. I had drains added to the carport of my mid-century modern home about 6 years ago and it made such a difference. My friend, who is a master craftsman, did the work. I was fascinated watching him carve out a slight slope around the drain edge (which he sunk a little below grade of the rest of the concrete carport floor) to channel the water toward the drain. He did an amazing job.
@crushed-candies
@crushed-candies 2 күн бұрын
@@medavis Absolutely, and I'm unsure how the ground meets the foundation/the back and left wall of the garage, but if there's enough rainfall or collection and it meets the lip of the foundation it could very easily seep under the walls if there isn't proper waterproofing. And going below foundation level, depending on the ground level, will absolutely result in rot and mold. I would personally extend the drain down the left wall of the garage for longevity and added security since the walls are directly touching the foundation. I don't doubt however that Jenna and Nick will properly waterproof!

Plywood/OSB, and Particleboard/MDF are only different in the source material, not the glue. Plywood is wood chips glued together, particle board is sawdust glued together. Particle board is usually used for cabinets and shelving because its' lighter than solid wood. Both use urea-formaldehyde glue unless it's "E0". Either way, "engineered" wood can be stronger when used properly, and absolute rubbish if used wrong (eg bathroom exterior walls) which is why it should never be bare exterior walls, because it crumbles from long term UV exposure.

It will be so nice to see you standing in the finished garage & see the door open and remember this day & how it looked. That goes for the rest of the walls you are building. Can't wait for the glass to go in and see the beautiful views the way you have planned it from the kitchen & living room. Good job. You have come so far! ❤❤❤

I enjoy your content, you are the one that makes it entertaining, the progress is a bonus. I learn so much more from seeing your journey, roadblocks and all, than I do from the milestones. I may never be able to own a house (I live in a big city) so I truly enjoy the slow(it's not actually slow) process and look forward to every video

It's fascinating to see, how you build a home, because in germany most buildings are made from stone and concrete. That's perhaps why it' s kind of relaxing for us;-)Love it!

Ciment slabs move. Dip. Sink. Time and weather, on a mountain. It's not always shanes fault. + i don't see any shims at the base of that wall to level it. That is all it needs is shimming on the ground and voila, leveled wall. + you need to put a foam under the bottom plate since we have winter weathers. I'm surprised they didn't require you to do that. I would do that if i were you.

Hi Jenna just so you know that you have a faitful watcher all the way from New Zealand. I stumbled randomly on your insta video one day right at the start and have been looking forward to your updates every week. Rome wasn't built in a day, and every project has its ups and downs, just remember that you're doing great. Write down a list of all that you have completed and or done and it will show you how much you have accomplished already. Chin up, you're almost there.

Nothing about this project is boring, though it could feel that way for you from time to time. It's immensely interesting, both to follow the project, learn a shit-ton from your actions, as well as being entertained by both of you guys :)
