I'm looking forward to that! Tully Blanchard vs. Magnum T.A. at Starcade 85 in a steel cage with "I Quit" rules for the NWA United States Heavyweight Championship is the best "I Quit" match I have ever seen as well. The whole layout of their feud was done flawlessly, it even started when Tully was NWA World TV Champion, and he was feuding with Dusty in June of 85. Magnum was on commentary for a few Blanchard matches, didn't like the cheating from Tully and Baby Doll at the finish, especially vs. Don Kernodle, and went down to ringside to get involved. Tully sucker punches him, beats him up, and away we go! Even before Tully loses the TV Title and Baby Doll for 30 days to Dusty at the Bash, Tully and Magnum start to have matches for Magnum's U.S. Title. Baby Doll escapes Dusty at the ranch, and a few days later at the Charlotte coliseum, in a brutal battle, a female security guard(Baby Doll) went down to ringside and handed Tully a roll of quarters, and Tully got up and knocked out Magnum with the punch, and covered him for the pin to become the new U.S. Champion. That, along with Magnum getting mauled in a locker room doing an interview by Ole and Arn Anderson, brought out the hatred and rage in Magnum. That led to the next four months of intense, bitter hatred between Mangum and Tully over the U.S. Title. Both men showed it in the ring and in their promos, as they had brutal, bloody battles all across the country for the fans to see. Tully was so sick of Magnum that he gave him one more match to win the belt back, and when both guys got knocked out and counted out, Magnum had no more shots at the title. Magnum had to petition Bob Geigel, the President of the NWA, for a sanctioned "I Quit" match. Geigel refused Magnum's request, saying it's to dangerous of a match to be sanctioned, and he couldn't allow it. Jim Crockett felt differently. He had an unsigned contract with Tully's name already on it, open for any wrestler to sign, and had Magnum sign it so the "I Quit" match could take place at Starcade 85 in a steel cage. The build up to this match was done so superbly, it was must see TV every week leading to this event, and the match itself was EPIC! Tully and Magnum in the cage was brutal, bloody, fierce, and exhausting. The finish was so dramatic, you really had no idea who was going to win until it actually happened. This is one of my favorite matches of all-time, and it is my favorite feud of all-time.

Austin vs Bret WM13. Austin never says "I quit". He still lost though. He's fucking dead. He's laying there on the floor in a bloody heap. He's done. He loses. It makes dramatic sense for the match to end at that point. It's stupid to wait for the guy to wake up. He's done. That's a reason why that WM13 match is my favorite ever: we have a clear winner. It tells us a complete story that makes sense. These two guys hate each other so much that they threw everything they had at each other, and one of them basically had to kill the other one for it to all end. That right there is wonderful, it's a beautiful story with a great resolution, and it sets up everything that would go on between these two guys going forward. Waiting for the other guy to wake up would be so stupid, it makes the entire promotion look like dumbasses, and it makes the guy passing out so worthless and meaningless.

To me, an "I Quit" match is all about pride. It's not about being the better wrestler (which is what most standard matches are for), or even physically tougher (what Last Man Standing matches are for). A ref might call it in an I Quit match if someone passes out, but it's not as definitive. Especially with the Kingston-Moxley match where Kingston's gripe was that he never tapped, but instead passed out.
@tonywatts2584
@tonywatts2584 3 жыл бұрын
Admitting the other guy is the better man is admitting the other guy is the better man, saying " I quit" is saying I quit. Two totally different things. I quit in the middle of a card game once, was I "admitting" that my friends are better card players than me? No, by that time we had been playing cards for hours and I had had enough and was ready for bed.
@erikprestonTV
@erikprestonTV 3 жыл бұрын
It doesn't matter though. If someone chokes or knocks you unconscious; the match is over. In boxing or MMA, if someone can gets knocked out and starts having a seizure on the floor, but the person never "quits" it is still over. They can no longer intelligently defend themselves and the contest is over.

The 'I Quit' format worked back in the 1980s, when it was seen as a sign of weakness to submit to a hold. Bookers would even work out ways to give the face an 'excuse' for why they had to tap out-an injury, got screwed, extra leverage from a manager, etc. Then the 1990s, MMA, and Taz happened. Now guys don't just give up, they tap out. It's not any worse than getting pinned. Hell, everyone gets pinned once in a while, right? Sometimes you get caught in a hold, and can't get out. No sense getting crippled when you could live to fight another day. So how do you do an I Quit match now? Just act like these two guys aren't big whiny crybabies like everyone else on your roster, and would /never/ tap out? Try to book this match in a void where things aren't the same as in every other match on your show? It doesn't work. You spent two decades telling people that submissions are a part of the game, and everyone can lose that way, and then try to reverse that for one night and say two guys so manly they would never normally lose like that are going to have to find some way to get the other guy to tap. It doesn't work. You want a match like this, go with the old Last Man Standing format. Normal wrestling. Nobody has to change what they do. It's No DQ, any shenanigans go. A guy gets pinned, ref goes over with the mic and says, "You had enough?" He says "thank you sir may I have another" and the match continues. Eventually one of these guys looks up through the blood and sweat pouring into his eyes, his hands shaking from the pain, looks at a guy who is about to give him one more just like the last one and he says, "Please. That's enough. No more." If the heel loses it pays off the angle and they can both move on to the next thing. If the face loses, he comes back the next night and apologizes. Then his tag partner comes out and shames him about quitting like that, and they have to be pulled apart, and we have our next angle and start rebuilding our face so we can have him overcome, or so he can gatekeep for another heel on the way up.

Magnum tried to rip Tully's eye out though? I think if it's an I Quit Match the end should be someone saying I Quit. If you don't want either guy to quit for whatever reason don't book the match.

In terms of realism, I Quit matches should be ended by referee stoppage if a competitor is incapacitated. If that happens, they haven't said that they quit, but their body has quit by itself.

I agree with Jim and Bryan about how if someone is knocked and can't continue in an I quit match, then it should be stopped. That's why Austin and Bret Hart's match was so good. With that said, I did appreciate in Roman Reigns vs Jey Uso the story of how Roman wanted Jey to acknowledge him as the tribal chief. That was cool in that match, but making Jey pass out and continuing it was kinda dumb but I think Reigns stopped the ref from calling the match so that also helped. That one was at least something different vs the one with Moxley and Kingston

The whole point of the I Quit match is to humiliate your opponent into saying the words for everyone to hear. Its not about knocking them out or whatever. Its about which of you loses the resolve and has to ask for the opponent to stop. Otherwise prang them in the back of the head when they don't even know you're there and run to the ref to have your hand raised. That's totally missing the point of the match.

Cornette's point however, as I understood, was that if the match is booked as if one or both participants are pretty much "out of it" at one point or another during the match, the stipulation is dumb. (the most obvious example mentioned in the comments is the Rusev/Cena match. with Rusev literally using water to get Cena back to consciousness. that's what I feel deserves to be called dumb. passing out means losing the match)

I think what it is IS that the idea of an "I quit" match has to be different whereas if you had good players doing the match, the core of the match doesn't have to be changed. Adding the spectacle of a hell in a cell or using a barbed wire baseball bat and having someone say I quit even though they weren't in a predicament makes it "Different". Doesn't make it good.

The WWE I Quit matches since at least the Attitude era were always explicitly that they had to say I Quit, and that a knock out didn't end it. They've been doing it over over 20 years, so it's what even long term fans have been trained for. The idea being that you do as much damage as you can to make the opponent suffer, not just put them down with a punch. Additionally, in modern times knock outs have been greatly de-emphasized, in large part to all the worries about CTE injuries. So to a modern fan, a "real" knock out is going to be associated with a botch anyway, rather than something being an effective attack. You can blame Vince for that being how modern wrestling fans see it, but its not the fans misunderstanding how the match operates under how the WWE has presented it for decades.

Quitting or not quitting in general with certain professional wrestling matches necessarily NEEDING the words spoken for a winner to be determined seemed interesting to me in the beginning. But there were a few that had a winner determined even though the words "I Quit" were not spoken and in my memory both featured Bret "The Hitman" Hart at WrestleMania. He choked out Bob Backlund at WrestleMania XI for the WWF Championship and Bob never Quit. Then two years later at Wrestlemania 13 against Stone Cold Steve Austin which lead to the legendary double turn and Stone Cold became the badass Babyface Wrestling fans started to react very high on him. I Quit matches some were good others not so much so in a way I guess I can agree in my opinion of the pointless effort of needing the words spoken to surrender the match and declare a winner.
