Interesting review. I've a 2016 diesel 1.6 hatch. Owned since 20k, now on 67k. In that time, other than standard servicing: Front discs and pads at 50k (pads were fine, but discs on min). Rear pads. Air con regas 1 year ago - strange as no leaks found. New Varta Battery last week. One chewed locking wheel nut (have now removed all 4). Very happy with the car overall. Only thing worth checking is for chassis corrosion. I'm pretty diligent at keeping a car clean, but doing a 'spring clean' with the rear wheels off, quite a lot of surface corrosion over all rear suspension parts, and also on the rear floorpan - creeping under the undercover trays. Worth getting the wire brush and waxoyl out! I'll take a look at the front chassis shortly. Expect that to be better than the rear. Big fan of Honda, had many Honda bikes, currently still have a Fireblade. Love Japanese engineering!

Yes, interesting. I bought a 45k 1.6 idtec 2017 version (hatch) in January 2021 and now in August, I can’t find any for the price that I paid; most are £700-£1000 pricier. Chuffed to bits with it, no issues, it’s quick and I’m getting 70mpg mixed driving and I’ve put on 8000 miles so far. These are cracking cars!

Hi John, I’m only getting 52mpg, recently had a service and MOT. And I had to have a new turbo fitted which stung the pocket. Any tips or ideas how to get the MPG up?
@johndglynn Жыл бұрын
Hi Tom, use as many motorways as possible! I guess it all depends on what the driving is like. If it's not long runs at under 2k RPM then I guess it will use some fuel, but that does sound lowish. Hopefully they changed the air filter. Maybe worth trying some V-Power diesel or similar for a couple of tanks and seeing if that helps clean the injectors? I have been using the Eco button for a while and am getting a true 60-ish mpg in a mix of motorway and A-road driving. No idea how people get 80mpg out of these cars!

How do you find changing your own oil affects the value of the car? I have wanted a honda accord estate for ages, but considering these as an alternative. One of the last Honda civics with a proper hand brake.
@johndglynn3 жыл бұрын
A good question. I buy to keep until at least 150k and always sell on privately. I served most of a mechanical apprenticeship and now work valuing classic or rare cars and motorcycles. I don’t think maintenance switching from dealer to me (with occasional garage input for things I don’t want to do) has any great effect on future value, given the big driver at the point of my exit will be mileage, condition will be above average and the vehicle will be rare and in some demand 👍🏻
@jonathanhowson64203 жыл бұрын
@@johndglynn I started off changing the oil in my Honda CBF 125, then my Toyota Aygo. I not how the Toyota and a LR Discovery 3, but I want to trade them both in for a Honda/Toyota estate for the practicality and reliability. Servicing the Aygo my self as well a changing diacs and pads etc has saved a small fortune over the years. I guess if you keep them long enough, and keep a record of the servicing, with recepts for the oil and parts then someone will buy it. Keep up the good work :)

Hey there, mister. First of all, thanks for your time spent on these videos, and of course, I do have a question. I would like to avoid diesel engines, but I fell in love with civic tourer, as soon as I seen it cruising on the way. Is 1.8 I-VTEC good choice? I would like it to last at least 10 years and in my life I came across some petrol engines from Honda, that worked pretty nicely even with half a milion kilometers on their odometers. You drive diesel one, but zou have much more experience with this car than I do, so your opinion would be appreciated. Thanks

curious what is the rpm at a steady 70 on the motorway
@johndglynn3 жыл бұрын
It’s a touch under 2k rpm, so 1950 or so on 20k-mile-old tyres. Gets up to 2500 rpm at 90 mph so top gear is a proper overdrive.

hello John, I personally was thinking of buying a Honda Civic Tourer since I need a "new car" but I was thinking of something that could last a very long time and so far my research has led me to Honda or Toyota being the best reliable cars or engines some say... I have Opel Corsa or Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 gasoline has you may know. But I and my wife and my sons need another car since almost all of us already have a driving license and 1 car isn't enough for all of us, would you recommend buying Honda just like yours? Used honda 1.6 idtec from 2014 between 49 000 and 125 000 km prices goes from 14 000€ to 17 000€, here in Portugal.
@johndglynn3 жыл бұрын
Hi Hugo, sounds like a good choice to me. I’ve rented a few 1.2 Corsas in Spain and the Canaries so you’ll really notice the extra dynamic range of the Civic with no drop in economy. You could easily see 240k kms or more from the diesel with no big issues if you maintain it properly. Better to buy lower miles if it’s just €2k difference from say 50-100k kms.
