My two teens were waiting on tonight’s election to determine if they would pursue military service next year. As I did for 32 years. They will not. They do not trust Trump as Commander in Chief. And they are ashamed of their country & do not want to defend its values. I have settled in Europe for retirement. They will remain here & pursue careers as EU residents. After 15 years we finally managed to get rid of the criminals who caused this misery, but it will take generations to recover if we ever do. I’m struggling to find John’s optimism tonight. I knew tonight would be scary and the race would be stupidly close, but seeing the results unfold is terrifying. Trump has said so many disqualifying things over the years, and people do not care. How do you make peace with a country that is comprised of so many people who think Trump’s platform is okay? How do you build hope in the future when it’s abundantly clear that the system and society are broken? I can’t keep saying “give it another 4 years, it’ll get better.” We’ve said this before, and nothing ever changes. The same rat race and prejudices continue to run the country, and it seems nothing can stop them.
@Wishinghornetsonmaga18 күн бұрын
@@Chris-fq5jd This…It’s exactly how I am feeling. I’m hurting so deeply right now realizing that so many - TOO many - Americans voted for Trump. Because even if Trump loses, these people aren’t going anywhere. It sickens me to even share air space with the MAGA cult. The division that the sad excuse of a GOP and their king have sown in this country is deplorable. It will be felt for many years to come. It can’t just be smoothed over so easily, not with all the hatred and violence it has inspired. And that’s where the hopelessness really hits home.

I'm not going to sugar coat this. Today I am a fundamentally changed man. I am impotent in helping my daughter survive this. In a way that a single person only can. To help her build a better world, as we're at the crossroads of climate calamity and looming fiscal dire straights. In 2016 a lot of bad stuff happened, but the worst excesses of Trump had guard rails. Now he won't have them. We have a GOP ready to bend the knee. An opposition neutered and unwilling to fight hard. And an electorate willing to embrace authoritarianism. I wish I had strength to pray for Ukraine, Taiwan and Gaza/West Bank and all the people Trumpism will threaten and destroy. But the reality is that I can barely muster enough to see my own future. It was already precarious going into this year with many years of economic stability needed to see me through it. Now I see a wall. Insurmountable. And that is - hard. It was hard enough. As my wife and daughter sleep, I think about what I can say in the morning that will make this better. And there are not a lot of words coming to me.
