I was a businessman. I met a bar owner when I was attending a Texas high school. The drinking age was 18 then and we had fake IDs. The area was seeing a lot of growth so the man had coverted his detached garage along a busy street into a bar. During the afternoon they served a good hamburger and we would sometimes leave HS to eat there. They had a couple of coin-operated pool tables and pinball machines. Beer was sold in a can for 75 cents. A short time after graduating high school we acquired an Asteroids video game (bought it for $900 from an arcade because Asteroids Deluxe was coming out). We put it in the "bar." We had a 50-50 agreement. We would get half and the bar owner would get half. The first week our half came to $75. At 25 cents a game, that's 1/2 of 600 games played. Not bad. Problem was... in the beginning we gave the owner a key to the machine "in case it got jammed" at his suggestion. Our weekly revenue fell week after week... and we knew he was ripping us off as the machine had a coin counter. We should have been able to quickly pay off our investment... we even added an older baseball game we purchased for $200 that did well until some regulars (alcoholics) unplugged it because the homerun siren annoyed them. But, ultimately, we pulled the machines from there. Since my friend's father bankrolled us, they ended up in his home (the other problem was my friend had begun spending our earnings on his new girlfriend... flowers, wine, etc... so we couldn't pay his father back).

He was obviously super cocky and thought his athleticism could win every game, and he wasn’t wrong about that most of the time. He was right up there with Reggie Bush, Vince Young, Tyrann Mathieu, Barry Sanders. One of the all time most exciting players to ever play

And he made a comment about trying to find happiness now in different ways than he used to. There was also clips of him returning to A&M recently to cheering fans.

Dude is bi-polar. Went from an average dude to the top of college football, nationally known, and partying with Drake and Lebron in the course of 6 months. He burned out and squandered an NFL career. Because of that people retroactively dock his play in college. ESPN released that top 100 players list and to not have him on there, it's all based on what he did off the college football field and ignores what he did on it.

@@wardad5628Yea, that’s how I was raised too, but I was raised incorrectly in this area. I didn’t realize this until I had colleagues and friends that were bi-poor. For those that don’t understand it and haven’t experienced bi-polar up close, like me, it comes across a a poor character from someone who makes bad decisions. The decisions are still bad, but honestly it has nothing to do with character. Its a mental illness that is easily covered up until it explodes. You don’t have to believe me, but people later in your life might convince you. Either way those that have seen it upfront, know that is not a character flaw.

Something funny that came to mind is that former Gamecocks great Connor Shaw (a coaches son, basically a choir boy, and who worked so hard at the game even Steve Spurrier never criticized him) first replaced legendary Gamecocks problem child Stephen Garcia (who was kicked off the team). Then Shaw became an undrafted free agent for the Cleveland Browns, and replaced Johnny Manziel (albeit briefly) before Manziel was eventually released. Shaw studied film religiously, did everything right, and was a good runner, but didn't remotely have the arm strength for the NFL. Still when he started for the Browns against the Ravens after three Manziel starts the Cleveland site DawgPoundDaily compared the two QBs: "They threw for almost the same number of yards 177 Shaw, 175 Manziel) on the same passing percentage (50% for each). Shaw was allowed/able to throw for almost as many attempts in one game as Manziel was in parts of 3 games, a little over 2 quarters more." They concluded with pros and cons: "Connor Shaw looked far more comfortable when pressure was around him. Johnny Manziel had a far, far (did we say far) stronger arm. When Shaw rolled out or escaped the pocket he was more productive than Manziel. Manziel’s talent base is much higher. Shaw’s ability to manage games was higher."

Everyone likes to talk about the “money Johnny raised”, yet always leaves out the part that A&M launched a major funding campaign for both athletics and academics. Only $275 million of that was for athletics and was for a new stadium build. The rest was raised for major academic capital projects.

Right on target Josh. I would like to add- I guess it’s a nuance- to the fundraising amounts being reported around the Johnny timeframe. I had to dig into old emails but I found first mention of the Kyle Field redevelopment plans from an attorney friend in August of 2011. A&M was planning a major reno of Kyle prior to Johnny playing a down. The first official communication I have was in Oct of 2012 and fundraising aimed at season ticket holders followed around May of 2013. Season ticket holders were required!! to make capital contributions in order to maintain their tickets. The 12th Man Foundation was nice enough to let us spread payments over 5 years. So when you hear that Johnny raised all this money, I believe that’s partly true but a sizable chunk of it was required. He certainly helped the capital “assessment” pill go down easier for sure. Same thoughts as Josh. I was pretty surprised they made a documentary this early on in Johnny's (Lord willing, as Josh put it) life story. I mean, yeah it all started over 10 years ago but it's only been only a couple years since the fallout. In the grand scheme of things, there are still more chapters to be played out. Hopefully the full redemption arc will find its way in someday soon.

A rich kid, who fizzled out. We wish our athletes cared as much as we do about what they are doing, but that's not reality. Johnny simply had too much fun and it took over. He had money. He had fame. He had nothing to fall back on, internally, when life got hard. When people get pressed and stressed they fall back on what they know best. Johnny escaped his failures by partying and getting high. He didn’t fall back on studying because he never had... He didn’t fall back on practicing more because he never had to do that... He was limited by his own success. And, he's definitely not the first.

Just a technical economics note- players do not remotely get paid “the value they bring” or add to an institution, schools don’t pay for the increase in overall branding it’s specific advertisement type stuff, Manziel would have made a lot through those but to imply he would have earned even a small fraction of those sums being thrown around just isn’t true, the same way the top players today don’t make anywhere remotely in the same universe as that today even with inflation and growth

Sad to see and hear about Manziel drinking his "career" away. However, the more knowledgeable NFL GM's realized that the style of college football Manziel played was an undiscipline backyard game. Johnny is neurodiverse. In the vanity fair piece it talks about him running around bashing his head off walls until blood came out. Thats self harm. Thats very common in neurodiversity bc of the stimuli and overload of stimuli. You can see it in the doc even, when he blows up and is walking to the bus, hes overloaded. Johnny is unique and needs help. He needs to realize that hes not a normal person and adjust from there. I have the same issues. But he isnt ready to remedy them.
