Was really surprised the Meg doesn't make an appearance. For me, the scariest deep-sea monster was in the movie Dinotopia. It guarded gems the protected the island from dangerous dinosaurs, as well as prevented anybody from ever leaving the island. (They couldn't leave by sky due to bizarre weather patterns; essentially a dinosaur island in the Bermuda triangle kind of feel.) Scared me from water for weeks as a kid. Homemade Collectibles2021 has a clip of it recorded from their phone when it's on a tv, but the actual movie gives way more presence and scary atmosphere to it.

I live in central Florida and used to swim at Daytona Beach quite often. When I saw the movie Jaws in 1975 I realized when you go in the ocean you become part of the food chain and haven't been in the Ocean since nor would I let my children swim in the sea. Florida has had several shark attacks this year.

Creature feature is my favorite film genre and while shark horror is fun on screen, let's remember that sharks in real life are not monsters. Hollywood depicts them as human hunters but that is far from the truth. While JAWS was a huge hit, it also caused a large fear of sharks that led to mass killings. Many shark species are critically endangered. Being educated on our oceans (including sharks) is important for the health of our ecosystems.

Jaws was partially inspired by a real series of shark attacks that happend in New Jersey over 12 days in July 1916. The first attack on July 1st in Beach Haven, NJ a man swimming in the ocean had his leg bitten off and bled to death. On july 6 a 2nd attack a 27 year old man was bit un the abdomen and also later bled to death. The third and fourth attacks are the strange ones as they happened in a tidal creek(a small river that emptied into a bay,) in the town of Matawan which is 30 mile north of Spring lake and a few miles inland from the ocean killing a 11 year old boy. The final attack happened a half hour and a half mile away later but the 14 year old victim was rescued by his ol older brother and a friend. I grew up in Matawan and even went to school with a relative of the boy who surived the last attack. Because of the fact that Matawan creek is brackish water(it has a lower salt level than the ocean) it was most likely a Bull shark or a young great white.
