Excellent vid young man! A well thought out and practical kit! I have added to my kit a large turkey oven bag. It does everything that a "normal" bag does, plus I can place two sticks in the ground leaning over my small fire, slip the bag down over the sticks to protect my fire from rain.A large fire will burn the bag, but a small fire or coals will survive the rain.I allow 24" between fire and bag. I've tried it and it works. Thank you for the great info, you are welcome at my fire anytime!!

really good start, I've noticed from past experience that your LBE will evolve over time, you'll add to it and you'll take from it, and eventually it will completely suit your specific needs and comforts, good video, every son should inherit a LBE system from their dad in my opinion.

Well done on your video. We each come from very different climates requiring different tools and cover items. The belt order kit has been used for over 1000 years with Mil Surp LBE being a cheap and very durable option. The ALICE clips do rub your body so a 4 inch wide strip of sleep mat tapped on the inside of your belt helps. Good luck, Greg

A very descriptive and informative video. The equipment you were describing (suspenders, pistol belt, canteen, cup and cover and ammo pouches) are called Load Bearing Equipment. It was replaced in 1973 by ALICE in the U.S. Army. Normally LBE comes with a butt pack. Since you appear to have a small waist, the butt pack might not fit on your pistol belt. I carry all the things you carry in the ammo pouches in my butt pack plus the shelter and ground cloth. I use one ammo pouch for my camera.

Good kit!! Now all you need is to use it and develop it (adding, removing and replacing stuff) to save space, weight and hassle and add function. Remember: the more you know, the less you need. Take that kit out and practice a little with it, and I promise you, you will soon learn to be comfortable with just a few of those items. Few examples of what I have on person when I leave my pack: good Leatherman multitool can replace saw, ferro-striker, screwdriver set, backup knife etc., Adventure Medical Kit SOL emergency blanket comes with orange reverse side, and it's more than enough for a basic shelter building, ESEE ferro rod (mine has pine sap in the compartment and jute twine braided in 2-ply fashion as a lanyard, so it has tinder, accelerant and ignition source in one, plus it has a button compass inside) can replace an altoid kit easily, spool from CVS adhesive tape with 90lbs test catfishing rope (fishing line or bank line would do as well) can replace paracord (you don't really need 550lb strength for building shelter or whatnot), and the self explanatory bandana, bic lighter with duct tape on it (check out gas stations for little lighter leashes, they make bics easily attachable to a carabiner), small flashlight, whistle, canteen/cup and of course my knife. Things like Altoids tin fire kit, tarp, hatchet, folding saw etc, are in my pack. It's a continuous process, and your kit will develop as you learn new things and develop new habits. Good luck.

I thought your video was well thought out to say the least! Great start… Might I suggest some items for your LBE. Lint soaked in petroleum jelly (double redundancy - lint/jelly) in a 35mm film canister. 2ea 1qt canteens,(H20, the fuel of life), Bug juice/bug wipes, sewing kit, A butt pack between the 2 canteens, put the machete on dominate side of belt and shelter on opposite side to “balance” it all out.

Nice. I know you said you did not have a sail needle on this kit because you did not think it necessary, but I would suggest you tape one to the back of you belt knife. I like your kit. I live in Florida and it's always very warm and right now it's Hurricane season so it is even hotter and the most humid all year. You feel icky and sticky, so it would be uncomfortable to wear anything that is heavy and covers us up to much. As a result I tend to lean towards EDC gear that I can carry in pockets or a small and light wearable bag that can be carried and easily taken off and left in the car or rested someplace. Also I like the use of the harness and an actual canteen. I'm not crazy about hydration systems. Maybe I am old school, but I like canteens and metal or even plastic water bottles.
@OwlOnTheGo12 жыл бұрын
A couple of relatively cheap suggestions to lighten that up and make it a little more functional. Change out the folding saw/machete combo for either an Ontario or Gerber machete with a sawback. Do a search for 'canteen cup stove', and pick up either an issue or one of the nice ones from canteenshop. Drop the EDC as one item, and add another ammo pouch to carry what you need. Also, add a couple of ziploc quart/gallon bags. You might add a $20 hammock to the kit too. Overall...very nice!

Interesting kit. If it were me, I would: ditch the machete/extra knifes/screwdriver, roll most of the items in the tarp+drum liner to turn it into a "blanket" backpack, keep an empty pouch for foraging, turn the other pouch for med-kit/hygiene kit, remove: some of the useless crap on the carabiner / add: mirror, stainless steel bottle, blanket (depending on weather). Great video though! Keep us posted on the developments!

Great kit, just a few suggestions, drop the folding saw and screwdriver set, The machete will do just fine for all your cutting needs when supplemented by your folders and hip knife, and the screwdriver set is unnecessary weight. Shift your multitool from inside the pack to on your belt, it's not that obtrusive and it'll be there when you need it. Do something with that EDC carbineer, it's way too loud/loose for safe and secure use. Awesome Idea with the tarp, it's a brilliantly concise system.

@sammy1fit Thanks for your comments. My initial first aid would be duct tape and a bandanna, good enough for what this kit was designed for. Like I said, this is what you put on BEFORE you put on your main pack that has the real first aid kit in it. If you dropped your pack at camp, went off, and got lost, that would be enough for one night. This kit wasn't designed to be complete, it has the necessities.

Very good video, and an excellent way to put surplus gear to further use as a good scouting and emergency kit. If I may make a slight suggestion, though, a buttpack from the surplus store would be a good idea. You could put your shelter materials in it and have room for items picked up on a scout (tinder, edibles, etc.). Keep up the outstanding work!
@tristanthompson19807 жыл бұрын
nice kit. my one suggestion is a lot of the misc stuff on your belt (the carabiner, saw, even the tarp) could fit into a standard buttpack no problem with extra room for say an fak or extra food. plus it'll streamline your whole kit. safe travels

Good well thought out system. If I were to offer one criticism it would be, as many others have said, replace the two mag pouches with the "butt pack" sustainment bag in the back. The loose saw, and edc biener can go in there along with everything in both mag pouches and maybe the tarp too. Then add one more canteen to balance it out and increase your water capability.

A recommendation for your belt kit there would be a military issue buttpack. That will give you alot more storage space and you could put the carabiner, saw and any other items in it. Possibly look at adding a stainless steel water bottle to you kit and a headlamp. Just recommendations, but otherwise than that you have a really nice setup going there. Great job! Semper Fi

I've already been over this with other peoplek, but I don't mind saying it again. I have an extremely high level of respect for our armed forces, in any branch. I do not wear anything with ranks or patches outside of the woods. These BDU's were my father's and I enjoy wearing them. I wear them in appreciation for what my dad has done. They stay in the woods because I don't have the right to wear them in public. So in that regard I feel like I can freely wear them in this particular place.

Nice. Just a couple suggestions to lighten your load a tad. SOG has a 13" (19"overall) machete that has a sawback that would probably be better for you to carry. You don't run the risk of the hinge breaking on the handsaw and with the weight you save you can carry a small wire saw backup for only a few ounces more. Also look into getting a mil-sur butt pack for the web belt to keep your items dry and leave your ammo pouches open for carrying tinder, trapped game, etc. from one camp to another.
@maxartone19 жыл бұрын
I would add the Sterling Sharpener to your minimal survival kit, at 0.5oz, its a great addition and it sharpens almost anything from knives to axes. A dull blade is the mark of a zombie lunch.

@Gilaman13 Thank for the support and advice. In my Medium Alice Pack video I show that I now carry a headlamp, and I agree with you, they rock!
@simonh63712 жыл бұрын
You definitely don't look like a doofus, just a clued up lad with a set of webbing on, a good customised setup at that. I used to use webbing in the British Army but it was the old 58 pattern which wasn't the best. We had to use this until the early 90s. The US army were about 30 years ahead of us with Alice. Now I have a set of modern German webbing in Flecktarn camo, but because that is too tactical looking and I'm riding through West London I generally go with Dutch pouches and a daypack which is the side pocket of a large backpack (woodland camo) but I keep inside more discreet bags until I get to a location in the woods outside the city. Then if I need to go scouting I put pouches on my belt and carry the daypack as a lightweight patrol setup.
@Gilaman1312 жыл бұрын
Thoughtful kit, great work! Also sounds like you know how to use the items you carry... Only thing I would suggest is revisiting your thoughts on carrying a headlamp with your WG. I did see multiple candling devices, no doubt you have light. However, for the weight and size, having easy hands free light can sometimes be a godsend. I hope my son grows to be as responsible and interested in self reliance as you seem to be. Keep up the vids.
