I think the Bourdain commentary wasn’t so much about “celebrities have it so bad” I thought it was more like if someone with a supposedly great life can still have the desire to commit suicide and someone with a “worse life” hasn’t even considered it, that’s how we know it must be a health issue, not just because of your life’s circumstances. But that was just my take away.

As a queer person who loves comedy, and genuinely enjoys Chappelle's comedy )when he isn't talking about queer people and women), it's incredibly upsetting to see so many comedians fighting to insult my community. It's legal to kill us out of fear/panic in most states. To say that we don't want you to punch down at us, it isn't suffering. You don't have to listen to us, you can say what you want. But so can we.

Can I raise my hand as a 35+ year old straight woman with a very healthy sex drive? I find that when people like Dave begin talking about LGBTQ people, and immediately goes into their sexuality, I feel like an asexual nun by comparison. I, too, have friends, neighbors, and associates who are LGBTQ and it never occurs to me to wonder who they have sex with. I care about their human rights, their joys, their fears, their hopes, their dreams, their thoughts and ideas. I’ve watched gay and trans porn. It does nothing for me sexually, but I appreciate its existence for those who do. Everyone should explore their sexuality in healthy ways with consenting adults. But I do not understand the obsession that some straight people have with whom or how a lesbian, gay, bi, or trans person fûč$, then claims to be regular-degular straight.

Actually, I believe it was his plan in that he intended to target darn near everybody. And he's expecting the backlash but claiming to be a victim I don't think so. Roland Martin and his panel have a pretty interesting take on it. Some I had already saw myself and they pointed out more of Chappelle's comedic genius. You don't have to like it and you have every right to criticize him but you should remember he's a comic. Not a politician or teacher who needs to watch their subject matter and think about who it may offend. Either you find it funny or you don't. I like Dave Chappelle but I'm not a ride or die fan. I laugh at what I find funny. I laughed quite a bit at Sticks and Stone's and must admit I was just as shocked by most of it. To assume audiences don't know what their laughing at is more offensive than anything Chappelle said. Especially since it was a predominantly black audience. How about it just wasn't funny to you or you didn't get the jokes?

Wow, the Anthony Bourdain joke was to show that mental health can affect anyone, regardless of the life they live. People living great lives on the outside could be suffering inside, and those struggling all the time can be sound of mind. The point was that you can't judge someone from a surface level. The fact that you thought he was trying to take up just for famous people suffering shows that you weren't really paying attention, because it's quite obvious. I mean you're talking about a man who left $50 million on the table, and went to live in Africa for some years. He knows that money doesn't buy happiness, but that it makes life a whole lot easier (which is why he ironically brags about being rich). Dude struggled to get where he is, since 15, and has dealt with bouts of depression, like anyone else. Also, people laughed at him saying Bourdain killed himself because of the way he speaks. Honestly, it's the way Dave speaks (changes his accent, enunciates, etc.) that has a big impact on why so many people find him hilarious.

One of the common themes that disturbed me was how often Dave condoned violence and abuse as a natural realty of life, and not actual crimes that are illegal. Whether it was sexual abuse during childhood or adulthood, domestic and intimate partner abuse, or physical violence against children, he seems to believe it’s so common, we should all just live with it, rather than investigate and prosecute. And I believe that’s rooted in the fear that investigations, prosecutions, and convictions of famous black male perpetrators will eventually lead to the state justifying an irrational increase of black male incarceration. It’s not what I support, but I think that is his logic, and a line of logic I have heard from a few black men, both gay and straight. The country has a history of making the face of any immoral crime a black male face. And so men like Chappelle are afraid. Yet, black men who think like this are getting too far ahead of themselves and only thinking about themselves. We should not continue to condone violence and abuse in our communities - especially in our intimate spaces - in order to protect black men from further violence by the state.

Some people end up getting indoctrinated into the extremist alt right from mere "jokes." The jokes end up being part of the road into gaining those toxic opinions. Stuff can have ramifications, even if there is a carefree veneer to it. Also, people are seriously pressed that they can't make transphobic/homophobic/rape jokes without being called out?? YIKES, that's so sad and messy!!! And side note why are people pretending like the callout of problematic jokes is censorship? Like we're revoking their right to free speech??? @Kathryn Dorsey Hey, none taken. I understand your argument but what I am trying to say is that comedians should be more conscientious of the influence they carry and the power they have when it comes to molding the minds of young people. I think that spewing out blatant ignorance packaged in a joke, is quite frankly doing a disservice to the society around us. I think that the jokes comedians make at the expense of marginalized groups often trivialize real traumas and hardships that people have to face. There is something to be said about the fact that blackface, at some point in our history was considered to be "just comedy" for the masses. Things have impact, and those jokes shape a culture that dismisses marginalized people's struggles. And what I really don't appreciate is that Chapelle is not making an effort to understand. He wants to victimize himself on certain issues and then proceed to talk about how sensitive other people are and poke fun at their oppression. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth, that's all and I think it's important to talk about these things. Also, I understand the sentiment that you go to comedy shows to laugh. But I also think that there are plenty of people in comedy who are funny, who can get into that raunchy/edgy humor and who aren't just blatantly putting down minorities? I don't think that being offensive and being funny are mutually exclusive and if comedians can't be funny without attacking minorities..... are they really even that funny? Again, just my opinion and I do see where you're coming from. Definitely not trying to dictate what people can and can't laugh at (I don't hold that kind of power!!), but I do think there's a benefit in reflection. (Side note: Sorry this was so long!!!)

Try harder with the "comedic analysis" please, or just stay away from the topic you're not prepared for. Pick one. Dave Chapelle has clearly thought more about race than other topics, which is why his jokes about race CUT deeper than his surface-level (read: crass) jokes about trans-issues. His jokes on the topic are literally dumber. So you can call his jokes funny all you like, but some jokes are funny because you share the same ignorance/immaturity rather than funny because they touch on a deep truth. Learn the difference.

Some of the people in the comments are trying to dictate what should and should not be said in a comedy show. I prescribe to the Richard Pryor, “If it is funny say that shit.” perspective. If you don’t like it you can criticize and turn away from it. However, no group is above being joked about, and that includes the transgender community. I find sjw’s sometimes concede to ridiculous points of view just to be obliging to transgender politics. I give you the example of Mario Lopez. He merely stated that he didn’t think it wise to prescribe gender change to a three year old child. I am no fan of Candace Owen. However, I watched him humbly give his opinion as a father. He was jumped on and forced to retract his statement to save his livelihood. There was no discussion of that issue, and I feel no one learned anything from that controversy, especially Lopez. At least with Dave Chapelle we can discuss his art and gain some perspective and knowledge. Hey, I don’t like the art by that guy Maplethorpe, but I will fight for his right to put it out there. Dave Chappelle is consistent. He's always walked an awkward line. He was never everyones favourite (except his peers) until the show. His audience grew exponentially because of the show, but none of these things are new. He's always circled and dissected these topics. Comedians tend to talk about similar things over and over until there's nothing left. But regarding Dave the man. His biography makes it hard for him to relate to a mass audience. That's always been his issue. It's like he tells the funniest inside jokes. Both his parents were scholars. Although he lived in Washington in the crack era, his parent divorced and his father moved to a very white liberal part of middle America, exposing him to white middle America during his formative years. He's been a professional comedian since he was 14. There's not a lot that's typical about Dave. He's said it countless times, comedians are his family. Celebrities should have privileges. He's more comedian than black, etc. Of course he's going to defend comedians and celebrities. That's what he know and that's what he likes. He's always been unapologetic. He's never concerned himself with people as much as ideas. He thinks he's special, because his life's been special. He's been treated differently because of his intellect and abilities and he does not want that to stop. If I was in his position I wouldn't want it to stop either. Have you ever been on a first class flight? It makes coach feel like a punishment. Dave Chappelle has way more in common with Barack Obama and Donald Trump than most anyone reading this comment. And he's made jokes about that too. Celebrity is a hell of a drug!

I feel such a great amount of relief hearing you talk about it and recognize discrimination against LGBT+ people from an intersectional perspective - and by that I mean by combining the two social liberation movements of racial liberation and sexuality/gender liberation. I have never heard someone talk about both movements and how they work together and how they can’t be compared. I really like that you frame it as “this is the problem with viewing justice as a race” where the two movements aren’t against eachother, they work toward the same overall goal. It’s SO REFRESHING. So just because one person has a rougher life isn’t suicidal doesn’t mean no rich person can have a chemical imbalance in their brain that causes clinical depression. That makes absolutely no sense. Some people are more likely to become depressed due to genetics, lack of coping skills, childhood trauma, or personal experiences. Putting one rich person vs one poorer for an argument about depression is overly simplistic and misinformed.

Kmm M So it’s still a joke trivializing someone’s death and mental illness. There are black people who have committed suicide. Just not his friend. Also just because his friend told him he’s not depressed doesn’t mean he isn’t. Mental illness is more of a stigma in the Black community especially among Black men who are more likely to see it as weakness. So while black men don’t commit suicide as much as white men (which is really an assumption), black men can live with depression. Plus depression is known to lead to obesity, alcohol and drug abuse. Something Dave has even struggled with. We both know this can be a more common result of depression in our community. Our people die from addiction and related medical conditions at an alarming rate especially our brothers and sistas who live in poverty. The point is this joke is faux deep. if he didn’t know depression manifest differently in our community, he is not well informed. Plus it was insensitive to people who suffer from mental illness or lost a loved one to suicide. It is valid for people to criticize this joke.
