@@Darnedkev oof, as someone who also can't concentrate if it's too quiet, I feel your pain! When I'm coding, dubstep is the best for me - few if any lyrics, steady beats, and plenty of bass to down out all the backgrounds thoughts _constantly_ running through my noisy brain. Audiobooks have been my jam when doing mundane and repetitive tasks (which is about the only time I have to read anyway these days 😕)

One thing though - the Bene Gesserit weren't necessarily trying to maintain power for the women - they were trying to breed the most powerful prescient entity, which is the Kwisatz Haderach. This entity is intended to see what both men and women can see, so they would bridge the gap between the two. The Bene Gesserit are all female, but the Kwisatz Haderach would be male. They were upset with Jessica because she made an attempt with Paul that they didn't sanction - she was supposed to have a daughter so they could maintain the Atreides bloodline and the Harkonnen bloodline in their breeding program. Sorry for the extra lore ... but the first Dune book is one of my all-time favorites and I always appreciated the intricacy of these different political forces within the Imperium. Like, everyone else is playing checkers while the Bene Gesserit have been playing 3D Chess while floating in zero gravity for thousands of years at that point.

Anytime anyone talks about learning fake languages for movies, it makes me think of The 5th Element and how Milla Jovovich and Luc Besson both knew it well enough to joke and send letters in the Divine Language from the movie - the dedication is insane

Hi Ethan, Sean and fellow leakers! I'm an English lit major (help) and I'm also autistic/adhd with a MASSIVE hyperfix on Dune (help²). Hell I even wrote a research paper on Dune once. So I'm gonna talk about some shit regarding the books (spoiler free) for those who want to read dune for the first time because of the movies: (gonna be long, sorry) -movie/book differences Don't worry about them. Like Sean said, they're practically the same story with slight changes. The changes made, while big, also help heighten the experience of the movie. They're inconsequential as a movie fan. -The length/writing of the book: Despite my love of the book, but it took me 4 months to read and it usually takes 2 days to read and finish books the size of Dune. What people say about the first 100 pages or so is true. I truly do believe that Frank Herbert (author) was so invested in the world that he created and he had a lot to say but with so little time, hence why the beginning is so hard to process (on top of it being from the 60s) Once you get past that, it gets easier. It is confusing at times- to combat this, I annotated the book and reread sections multiple times to understand it. This happens, that's normal and dont worry too much about it. -The [main] series: Frank Herbert wrote 6 Dune Books. In order they are Dune, Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, God Emperor of Dune, Heretics of Dune, and Chapterhouse: Dune. If you want to read about Paul and his story, read Dune and also Messiah. Children and God Emperor follow his children, while the last 2 books follow the aftereffects of Paul and his childrens' actions. -Brian Herbert Brian is Frank's son, and after his father's passing in the mid 80s he took on the torch of writing about Dune. There are currently 20+ spin offs regarding worldbuilding out there. Personally, I haven't read his books but I've heard a lot of people say these books suck. That is their opinion and not mine. If you want to read Brian's books, you're free to. Don't let others curate your Dune experience. Just remember to have fun with it. If you find Dune is not for you, that's okay as well!

As someone with dyslexia (and possibly ADHD), I have rekindled my love for reading by using an audiobook and reading along with the book. It helps me read quicker and better understand what I'm reading. So I hope this helps Ethan find the joy in reading again if this method helps him too.

51:10 For the scents Ethan, you're probably having trouble getting a smell just from the bottle because the good ol'factory bulb in the nose detects particles of smell, so if the liquid does not evaporate at room temperature (i.e. give off particles), you're going to have trouble getting any smell from it. Giving the bottle a shake beforehand might have helped a bit tbh I love the podcast, I'm always in stitches listening haha

I just watched a whole Nile...Blue? video about him making something that smells like what he smells when he handles metal and he went in depth about this exact thing and how it all means metal technically has no smell since it can't vaporize unless skin oils make it happen.

Since the boys brought up David Lynch’s version, let me just say that I have a soft spot for _Dune (1984),_ because the Late, Legendary Actor Dean Stockwell portrayed Dr. Wellington Yueh. Is it flawed? Of course! But Lynch was the first person to put Frank Herbert’s Magnum Opus on the big screen and he had a shit-ton of exposition from the first two books to cram into one movie. Also, in a really bizarre way, it was my lifelong love for Dean Stockwell- a former Child Star with over seven decades of film, television and stage credits to his name and who deserved far more accolades than he received- that helped me find Seán’s Channel in the first place!

The 1984 Dune is not for everyone, but it's worth a watch if you can keep an open mind. It's directed by David Lynch, so it is properly weird. Several of the performances are over the top in an absolutely wonderful way. Brad Dourif as Piter De Vries and Sting as Feyd are definitely worth at least looking up clips of.

Yay, welcome Sean to the world(s) of Sanderson! If you end up liking the way of kings and words of radiance, you may want to look up a reading guide for the cosmere. By book 4, some other of his works start to bleed into the plot. Also, I can't recommend enough listening to the audiobooks. Michael Kramer and Kate Reading are my favourite narrators and bring each character to life with different voices! Love the podcast. Cheers!

I love these episodes where the boys just go off and talk about these franchises they’re passionate about. I would be over the moon if Sean did the same after getting deeper into the way of Kings, I am so obsessed with that series and could probably listen to a dark souls playthrough-length rant from him about it in the future. There is so much to look forward to in those books!

The movies really sparked an interest for me in the books as well so I'm reading the first one now, about half way through. With me though, I feel like I'm very bad at keeping an image in my minds eye, which also effects my ability to imagine how something looks like because I cant hold an image long enough. But I think that's why I like to read books that have been adapted to movies as well, they help me along the way.

(I recommend EVERYTHING by Spider Robinson, Especially the Callahan's Crosstime Saloon books, and The Stardance Trilogy by Spider and his wife, Jeanne. I will push book recs shamelessly wherever!) Anyway, within the first chapter of Callahan's Key, the protagonists 18-month-old daughter informs Nikola Tesla (yes, THAT Nikola Tesla, he's a family friend) that when she's sixteen she plans to start having sex, and that if he takes a number now he could get in on the single digits. It makes sense in context...or at least it's explained. Awesome shit, go check it out!
