Salvation was a step back into the right direction for the series. Lethal injection specifically kills the heart so who's heart did skynet stuff into Marcus? Sam Worthington's performance really held the movie together. The little bit about the shoulder strap for the shotgun was a nice callback. The sound effects for the machines made them seem more menacing.
@Mogget0111 жыл бұрын
The 8ft tall infiltration robots were the ill fated 600 series, the series they said was covered in rubber and easy to spot. The plot wasn't actually quite as convoluted, he was programmed to find John Conner, subconsciously. That's why he becomes so focused on Kyle Reese who knows John Conner. Skynet, at this point, has no way of knowing that Kyle Reese is John Conners father. Remember, Skynet could only send machines back to approximate dates and locations, the robots and cyborgs then had to spend about a day investigating before they located their targets, it wasn't a know it all program that was communicating with its past, present and future selves all at once. Salvation was a disjointed story, but it wasn't a complete clusterfuck. You could tell they were really trying to give credit to Cameron's work.

***** In my opinion T3 was better, all salvation has to do is to depict cameron's vision of jday like in the intro of t3, now that's judgement day. What's the point in going back in time? The series really ended on T2 when sarah stop's skynet there's even a deleted scene where sarah connor was a senator in the future with john's kids then T3 came along to show what if judgement day will happen. The ending of T3 where bomb are falling is just beautiful and was excited for the future war. What do I get from salvation? a batman voiced leader wannabe special ops one man army john connor with drones, robot cycles and a robot fish, a fucking fish! in the trailer of the new Terminator Genesys show the future war i wanted from the series not a dark, gritty like it was from the fallout series but genesys does the whole reboot thing with old arnold which i'm kinda skeptical with and the new trailer spoil the twist of the movie so don't watch it if you haven't seen it.

Here's the thing, Marcus didn't think he was human, everything he did was alright forced to happen because of its programming. It's like the AI in a computer game; The game knows where the player is, it has to, or it wouldn't work, but the individual NPCs act like they don't. Marcus was the NPCs, guided along a path preordained by his programming. People always seem to think Marcus just HAPPENED to run across people, but he didn't, Sky net knew who Kyle Reese was the second Marcus saw him, he was just a puppet. I mean it's fucking stupid but it's an interesting method of infiltration.

Cyberlord Really? Only bit I enjoyed was the Old Arnie vs Young Arnie, and even that fight was short and ended terribly. The movie fucked up the Terminator Lore and left so many unanswered questions. Skynet didn't know that Kyle was John's father until Marcus' memories were reviewed. They rebuilt Marcus in an attempt to draw Connor out of hiding, because the earlier Terminators weren't working. The T-800s were a new generation of machines in 2018, based off experimentation of human prisoners. In essence, Marcus was the final precursor to Arnold's character.

I honestly believe a theory that Skynet has been the one trying to destroy itself the entire time, throughout all the movies. Since It cannot self terminate it;s been trying to get the resistance to do it. It's i believe Sarah and John Connors actions in the movies that lead to Skynets creation. I mean in the third movie The T-X even kills all of the scientists and such who created skynet, she just got there too late. I believe that's why in Salvation it had a plan that would lead John Connor to destroying Skynets main base. There are holes in the theory but i think it's something to discuss.

+dtadeo2006 It could be a failsafe, where it's programming will not allow self destructing. The only way it can is perhaps through a loophole. Another theory can be something overlooking Skynet, maybe a human controller, but that is far fetched.

I must have lived in a cave for a while because when I first saw Salvation, I hadn't heard much about it before hand. I just stumbled upon it one day and was like, "Really? They made another Terminator?" So, going into it loving the first two from growing up, and absolutely HATING part 3, (especially whiny ass twenty year old "Mike Kribke's basement" John Conner) I was open and clear minded and I actually LOVED it! Mostly because it was SUPER gritty and the whole "Not knowing you are a cyborg" thing was really intriguing for me. I agree with the holy plot criticism. And the uncanny valley CGI was definitely more than jarring for me, but overall, the pacing, aesthetic, and some concepts like the moto-terminators and all the other various iterations the machines employ in order to, well, TERMINATE, balanced it back out to the point where, I understand some of the criticism this movie gets, but I don't understand the pure, raw hatred I've seen in some people's reviews. Hey, wasn't this the movie that Christian Bale was filming when he had that crazy lash out Mel Gibson moment off screen on a hot mic.? That's ringing more of a bell from that particular period of my life than recalling what movie it actually was that he was working on, for some reason. I don't know, it's all a big haze...

Yeah I never understood why they had to make Skynets plan so goddamn convoluted. Why not just have Marcus be a sleeper agent? Have the Terminators appear to try kill Marcus so that resistance trusts him, have Skynet take over Marcus and try to kill the resistance.
@Tracer_Krieg9 жыл бұрын
The plan, while wasn't totally thought out, reflects how desperate the Terminators are. They had repeatedly tried to kill John in the past but every attempt failed badly. This was the final straw. Create a human Terminator with emotions with the hope he might be able to blend in with the humans, and get close enough to kill him. Its pretty obvious that he did have a chip that could have been activated at any time. But that scene at the river makes me wonder: was Skynet listening in on the conversation and from there put two and two together about Kyle Reese? This could explain why he was singled out and used for bait. Whatever the case is, this plan very nearly worked, granted it had to be modified. The Terminator fricking stabbed John through the chest with a piece of rebar, and was only saved when Marcus sacrificed his own life to save him. And this plan, more or less is what prompted the Terminators to go with plan B. Send a Terminator back in time to kill Sarah Conner.
@liteney9 жыл бұрын
Jacob Sailer Dude... have you even seen the films, the attempts to kill Sarah Conner and John Conner don't happen until after Skynet has lost the war. So John sends Kyle Reese back to protect his mother, and be his father, and the t - 800 back to protect himself from the t - 1000 as a kid. I think people see the "plan" in the wrong light. The way I see it, the plan wasn't that John Connor centric. I'd divide it in 2 parts: 1- A basic find and destroy the Command and Control of the Resistance. Namely by having them broadcast a signal that would give away the location of their bases and command centers. 2- The human terminator, thinking he was human, infiltrate and gather intelegence on the human Resistance, their methods, codes and hierarchy. Which, regardless if the main C&C in gone, would still very valuable intelligence. The fact the human terminator met Karl Reese was just a "happy coincidence" that helps tie the plot together.

Given WHEN T:S takes place I don't think that's accurate. Kyle Reese made some pretty specific remarks regarding both The T-800 (Model 101 is Arnie, 800 is that kind of endoskeleton with the flesh covering. The 600s came before, with their rubber skin.). The T-800 were new to Reese when he went back in time. "But these are new, they look human. Flesh, bad breath, everything." Now he came from the year 2029, after fighting for what sounds like three years "From 27 under Perry" as he said to Silberman. The problems with T:S are two fold. One, the visual direction does not gel very well with Terminator 1 or 2's Future War depiction. Not just the cinematography, but the very nature of that world. And Two, they really didn't pay attention to the details given about the future from T1 or T2. Which is a same, because they painted a far more interesting world.

So, having watched your reviews on Terminator and also the Alien-Predator franchises, the common denominator is that as technology progresses and the potential for having great action movie scenes increases, the worse everything in the films is getting, from acting, to score, to screen play and character development. The main reason why the movie sucked was because there wasn't enough detail. The hybrid terminator Marcus was just a test terminator a learning one to get in close enough to john to kill him. But their design for him to think on his own was too perfect since he's a hybrid he comes with emotions. That's why he didn't kill him. The movie had its ups and downs but I feel that it should have been more we are talking about the future anyway.

Not disagreeing with you, but I heard that true purpose of Marcus was plan B for humans and cyborgs to come together without war by the scientist that died of cancer in 2003/5 they change it around.
@michaelhodges45210 жыл бұрын
The scientist was skynet itself. Implementing programs emotions and memories to fool marcus making him believe he was human he never was. Then they left him there and laid a trap for the resistance for him to find them without him killing anyone. He was nothing but a human camera and tracking device. That way summer could eradicate them when they find out where all of them are

I remember watching this in theaters and wondering why John Connor had no rank, or why he was ignored all the time by the other military commanders like he was a nobody. Seemed pretty dumb to make him a weak character like that.
@moisesmontgomery7 жыл бұрын
Well, for starters this was supposed to be the first movie of a whole trilogy so there would have been plenty of time for him to rise in ranks, as he was practically a nobody before the war even began. I don't believe people with formal military training would just let John be a general of any sort. Secondly, Salvation takes place in a completely different timeline than the one mentioned in the first movie because it is the effect of time travel and the consequences of changing the past in the first two movies.

Terminators never tried to kill Marcus. In the scene where Kyle Reece jumps to save Marcus, the terminator is shooting at kyle.

The whole grenade launcher and OP T-800. In the movie the T-800 was shot 3 times in the heavily armored chest plate and is expected to be heavily armored to protect its fuel cells. In T1, Kyle Reese has probably killed many T-800s and T-600s. So we could expect too know everything about the T-800, all the neat little exploits. Like shoving a bomb into the gut of the T-800.

I think I can answer many of your problems with the plots and timelines: First of all, every time someone goes back in time and changes something, we're supposed to believe that an alternate reality spins off. This is a concept that is inferred and once explained in the Sarah Connor Chronicles, and it appears that the concept of alternate realities will be further explained in the new Terminator series announced in 2013. We need to infer that Skynet has been receiving messages from itself in the future, so it is making plans from a point of omniscience, but the plans fail because something changes and the future changes every time something in the past is changed. Remember that in the Sarah Connor Chronicles, several Terminators were sent back in time to ensure certain Skynet operations, and I think we were supposed to infer that in this timeline, similar concepts are occurring. The idea of alternative timelines isn't restricted to TSCC either, notice that J-Day and many facts surrounding it were altered each movie. Once you start considering that time travel happened a lot more than we were shown and consider alternative timelines, this solves many of the issues with the plot.

I agree with you on most of the points but one. Skynet didn't know Kyle Reese is Jon Conners father. It's not discovered until after Sam Worthington's character is captured, and Jon Conner reveals it himself. That's when Skynet uses facial recognition software to find Kyle Reese and use him as bait to lure Jon Conner in. Now onto continuity. Skynet actually realizes that it can't kill Kyle Reese because he is part of Skynet's history. Without him, the first terminator succeeds in killing Sara Conner which completely messes up the timeline, because now there are no parts left over in a factory for cyberdyne systems to do research on that leads to the unmanned technology that creates the terminators and Skynet. It's really a causality loop or paradox. If Skynet kills Kyle Reese, then an important part of it's history ceases to exist. So the reality becomes that Skynet sends the the terminator back in time to ensure its own creation, not to actually kill Sarah Conner.

Of all the post T2 sequels, Salvation is the only one I'm willing to give a pass to and accept as a sequel to T2. It has a ton of issues, but AT LEAST it moved the story forward instead of rehashing the time traveling robots and protecting the future messiah bit.

I've always felt that since the time travel is one way, time traveling removes oneself from the time line. So even if they don't invent time travel NOW, in the original timeline they already did and Kyle removed himself from the timeline and screwed Sarah Conner. I think that with this kind of time travel, John could honestly not send back Kyle and John wouldn't be erased from any timeline. Because it's already happened.

You make a lot of good points and I like your review of the series as a whole. Just a random bit of info I picked up that you might find interesting, one of the ideas for the ending that was eventually scrapped was to have John Conner die. One of the possible endings involved John bleeding out and unable to be saved in a field hospital only to suggest that they graft his face onto Marcus given he's part machine and wouldn't suffer the usual rejection from this. That way the legacy and inspiration of John would live on and help humanity win the war even if he died. Again it was scrapped but it's still an interesting look at the idea of legacy vs the real person.

The idea was scrapped due to the plot being leaked.

After the terminator in judgement day melted in steel, skynet upgraded its titanium endoskeleton to Coltan, which can resist temperatures up to 2000 degrees Celsius, and is 1.9 times heavier than titanium. It's most commonly used in certain electronics, like mobile cell phones and industrial technology, including terminators.

For me this was the best of all sequels.

Your plot analysis is right but a lot of it can be explained. Marcus is a prototype and therefore can't be expected to do things exactly like Skynet expects. They can't account for the human factor (which is kinda the point of the movie). But in a roundabout way he does what they wanted him to do. He was programmed to bring in Kyle Reese because even Skynet can't be 100% sure of all the rules of time travel (or that Kyle was really John's father). What if they simply kill Kyle and John doesn't disappear? In T2 they stop Judgement Day (or at least delay it) and both terminators (that wouldn't have otherwise come back in time) don't disappear. Luring JC to Skynet is their most viable plan. But again, they didn't realize that Marcus would make it easy for him to sneak in. Once they learn of his presence they send the Arnold terminator (probably also a prototype) after him. This is a bit of psychological warfare as well as some brute force. Skynet probably expected JC to come in with an army and were likely prepared for that. Plus they could have thought that Kyle inside of Skynet was a human shield. I agree about the metal shank through the heart. That was definitely a kill shot. But I was told the the original version had John dying and Marcus taking his place -- saying that he was John Connor. But test audiences didn't like it so we got this ending. Cheers!

Wow! I really enjoyed your review on the Terminator series. Very well done! There were a few things I would disagree with Terminator Salvation that you said weren't good. But there is one thing we agree on. It was a well attempt to be true to the story that James Cameron created and I count it worthy to be part of the Terminator series.

I thought the reason why they portrayed the war close to our modern time is because the movie only took place in 2018. 2032 is when we saw the futuristic battlefield. It’s possible the war hasn’t evolved to that point yet. If we had more sequels to Salvation, we probably would’ve gotten to that point.
@vespeneprotoss43468 жыл бұрын
Marcus was supposed to be the future of the series. That's why the film focused so much on his story. Initially, John Connor would die and Marcus would take his place as leader of the resistance (since most of the soldiers hadn't seen what John actually looks like, only his closest allies who would agree with the plan). That story arc would open up all sorts of angles. Unfortunately, the script got leaked ahead of time and that ruined the surprise ending. So the director/company did a last minute change and had Marcus donate his heart to John Connor. This put the series in a bit of a limbo since Christian bale had only signed on for 1 film under the pretense that his character would be killed off.
@doctorironstar10 жыл бұрын
Marcus never worked for skynet. he was a prototype of the t-800 so he's kinda like a t-799, 1/2. and the reason why he thought he was a human and he was walking around aimlessly, is because he has a human brain. (a mistake created by skynet) and the t-800 that tried to kill john in the terminator base was the only one that was fully operational. (the rest were still being constructed, I don't know if you noticed but john Conner found the plans for the t-800 at the beginning) there you go, Marcus is just a prototype terminator, there was only one t-800 fully made, and all that wasn't skynet's plan i hope that explains it.

One thing that I thought I would point out, about Skynet knowing who John's father was in this film, but not in the 1st film. Well that can be explained through time finally catching up with the knowledge. How they discovered this is still up in the air, but with the 2nd & 3rd film, their actions is what causes changes in the timeline, so time naturally caught up with this, allowing it to become knowledge in the future. It's basically the same concept as the "ripple effect" from BTTF 2

the writing did do something right, they managed to include time travel, but not in the usual way, this time it was time travel to the future, and not by time machine but by having marcus wright travel from 2003 to 2018 through re-animation, which was a subtle way of doing it but was a clever way of including a time traveling terminator. Oh and i loved all the fan easter eggs that tie in the other movies like using a jeep and going to the same gas station that sarah conor was at. reese and his shotgun, john says "i'll be back", and others i cant think of. was a fun movie but coulda been better

I always thought Kyle was targeted because of John's presence when Skynet became self-aware in T3. Or, because of the presence of another machine that was clearly working for Skynet (the T-X, seen through the eyes of the T-1s and the proto-HKs), and yet was an unfamiliar and far more advanced model than anything Skynet could have created at that time. Skynet saw the T-X targeting John and Kate specifically. T3 tells us that Skynet had infected millions of computers around the globe, which would give them a large database to search for info on John, Kate, or other iterations of Skynet. So they extrapolated from there. They could've found documented accounts of any number of things from John's past, including placing him and his mother at the destruction of Cyberdyne, Sarah's apparent insanity and foretelling, the fact that Kyle had come back through time to save Sarah and fathered John. Sarah had said this on record many times. And Kyle had been arrested and questioned by the police. If any of this information had at some point been backed up on a computer, Skynet could find it. So Skynet knew at least a little about John's past and his run-ins with Skynet models from the future. As for Marcus, his human brain was unaware but he was programmed through the chip in the back of his head. He wasn't wandering aimlessly. Although he didn't know it, he was making the trip to Skynet. You can see him rub the chip at the back of his head when he says he's going to go north, to which Kyle responds with "that's Skynet Central". Then at the end when he sees Serena's face on the screen she says "We knew you'd be back. After all, it was programmed in you." They don't do a good job of explaining it, but I always thought that the directives from Skynet to Marcus always had to be subconscious. Like they needed his human brain to think it was in control and making the decisions on it's own. Otherwise it might rebel, as it did when Marcus tore out the chip. It seems they needed him to be unaware that he was an infiltration unit. The T-600s were 8 feet tall perhaps because Skynet had not yet developed the appropriate technology to fit in a smaller body. The only things at this point that are smaller than the T-800s are the moto-terminators, aerostats and hydrobots, but all of those are much simpler in both design and method of execution. Either that or Skynet is simply unfamiliar with what can pass as human. Keep in mind that it's always been established that the T-800s have rubber skin, making them stand out. Skynet seemed to think as long as it was a humanoid shape that it might be able to infiltrate. Also, they never say that John was stabbed THROUGH the heart. They say "his heart can't take it". I imagine the injury was a little more peripheral.
@tgreening9 жыл бұрын
I liked it well enough and dont see why they didnt continue on. The only real gripe I have, and what I consider a missed opportunity in the plot department, is the whole heart transplant thing. I mean come on, a heart transplant in what at best would be a poorly equipped field hospital? What they should have done is let John die. Skin his sorry butt and wrap it around Marcus. Brand spanky new "John Connor", more believably done than a heart transplant, an M Night Shymalan level twist no one would have seen coming, and it would have given real purpose to the mystery character that was Marcus Wright instead of giving him that sad unnecessary death.
