The real hidden power of this is that you can take monophonic synthesizers and make them polyphonic. Bravo!

I love it for that. In the past I've converted several thick monophonic ES2 patches, with effects, over to custom polyphonic instruments. Like having a separate ES2 on every key!

The fun even starts when you load an autosampler into a track stack. Combining multiple instruments into one instrument sample.

Yep, it's incredibly cool for creating custom sample-based synth sounds, using software synths and blending them together. I actually did a video on that too a while back: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZbIZKKIgNVmfbMfeature=shared

Just wanted to say thank you for this - Apple has a PDF manual for Logic Pro that is completely and entirely useless. It mentions Auto Sampler but doesn't tell you how to use it. This video steps you through the process perfectly. Just followed these directions and cloned the CP70 sound on my Yamaha MX88. Now that sound is in my laptop and I don't need to drag the big heavy keyboard with me when I want the sound. Thanks again.

Hey! Got a question about logic. When using side chain on a track, take bass-track being trigger by the kick for example, how to you go about bouncing the bass without losing the sidechain effect. I know that you can record it onto another track but isn't there a easier way to do it? Thanks a lot!

Great tip! Been meaning to sample some of the stock kits on my Roland SPD-SX PRO but was putting it off cause I thought it was gonna have to be manually like the process of making a custom Sampler kit from loads of sample files. This will be stellar for me!

Hi MTHG, thanks for all your amazing videos over the years! I have a rather complex question: I have a hardware synth lead patch I’d like to sample but it has quite involved real time modulation effects. For example, when you introduce the mod lever the patch is crossfaded into a new oscillator set 2 octaves above (simulating a guitar pinch harmonic type sound). The patch is monophonic and velocity has no bearing on volume but when velocity reaches around 115 the patch becomes polyphonic. Vibrato is controlled with Aftertouch. Wah-wah is added with a downward move of the modulation stick (it’s a Korg 4-way stick, not conventional mod wheels). Is it possible to sample the patch as normal and also sample the patch in its various modulated states, like having say 33% of the pinch harmonic crossfade engaged, then 66% then 100%, and same for the wah? And is it then possible to map those new sampled states to be triggered via the mod wheel of your midi keyboard? Finally, I don’t think the AT vibrato or high velocity shift to a polyphonic state has to be sampled as audio, but is it possible to assign AT and Velocity to trigger these things inside the Sampler?

I have several things I created on the Moog Sub37 now part of my sample library, and of course with MainStage I can take these on the road without taking the (heavy and expensive) Moog with me!

Hi Josh, thank you so much for this video, and all of the others! This video made me wonder how I could sample a hardware drum machine or an electronic drum set to use in Logic as a drum kit. I figure I could record one hit from each instrument and create a custom kit on Drum Machine Designer, but I wonder if there is an easier way... Thanks again for everything!

You can also use Autosampler to "clone" other synth plugins (say a processed version of a sound) or to clone IOS synths that don't exist on MacOS just using one cable.

how well does it loop a multilayered instrument? (vst or real hardware) does it detect loop points automatically or do you have to fix each sample yourself?

Great video! I would assume your sample rate would need to be considered for this process. What sample rate do you have your session and sound card set for?
@MusicTechHelpGuy
@MusicTechHelpGuy Жыл бұрын
If you go look at all of the samples in Logic's sound library, you will see that the vast majority of them are 44.1 kHz 16-bit. However, auto sampler WILL sample at whatever your Logic Project/Interface is set to. In my case here in this video, it was 48 kHz 24-bit, but that's only because I was running a screen capture software at the same time, and it defaults to 48 kHz for video. I would personally always use 24-bit, but in my opinion there's no real need to go higher than 44.1 for sampling hardware synths, in a situation like this. (1) You're likely not going to hear the extended high frequency range when using a higher sample rate, and (2) it wastes drive space, because the sample files will be larger, and (3) Sampler will automatically convert the output to whatever you set your Logic Project/Interface to. So if you auto sample at 44.1, but you use 96k for your project, for example, there's no risk of the pitch of the samples playing back incorrectly, because Sampler compensates for that. However, there two caveats: (1) you might consider a higher sample rate if you are sampling "loop-style" instruments where there is a rhythmic element that needs to stay in time with the tempo of the project. If you are using the time manipulation functions in Sampler to sync the sample playback speed with your project tempo, then yes, having a higher sample rate can certainly help for better quality time compression and expansion. (2) if you are sampling an instrument that has a lot of high frequency emphasis and saturation, you *might* hear audible foldover/aliasing in the top end. It's not often, but occasionally with really high frequency harmonics that go above 22.5 kHz they can foldover back onto the sample recordings, and can sometimes sounds like inharmonic distortion -- muddying up the clarity of the top end. But it's rare.

I feel so stupid now! Why I never thought about this? Handy for modular synths when created a great sound. This is a great feature. Saves time and also never switch on the synth all the time.

Decentsampler can import exs24 format files (the kind Sampler uses).
@MusicTechHelpGuy

Not easily, but can navigate to two locations to find your EXS file and samples. For the EXS file: "Users > YourUserName > Music > Audio Music Apps > Sampler Instruments > Auto Sampled" -- there you will find your EXS file that contains the Sampler programming. Then go back one folder. Instead of Sampler Instruments, click on "Samples > Auto Sampled" and here you can find a folder for each of your auto sampled instruments. You can then either find a third party sampler that supports EXS files, like "Decentsampler" someone mentioned below, or you can simply manually reload and re-program the samples int he sample folder. Because sampler does labeled the files with their pitch name and velocity layers, it can make it a bit easier, but you'll still have to do some manual programming work.

Hello, what great videos of yours, thank you for your content. I am from Colombia and I come to your channel to learn. I wanted to ask you if you could suddenly recommend a 61-key Midi Controller that fits well with Logic pro X. Your suggestions would be very helpful to me. Thank you!!!

Virtually any MIDI controller will work with any DAW these days. I use a Novation Launchkey 61. But if you're looking for something higher quality I would look for something with weighted or semi-weighted keys, and larger and/or more precise faders and knobs.

You can do that with Quick Sampler. If you have a single audio file, you can chop up the transients with Quick Sampler, much easier than this process. I have a pretty detailed tutorial on Quick Sampler here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lYjHgXdumLxjjNUfeature=shared
