These videos are pure gold!!!! I was having heart problems, afib and stuff, and tested with high cholesterol. They were going to put me on statins. I watched What the Health on Netflix, and after seeing in particular Dr. Kahn the cardiologist, I immediately went on a whole food plant based diet. I had my blood tested THREE WEEKS later and my cholesterol was well within safe levels. THREE WEEKS!!!! The doctor wasn't even interested in what I did. I told him about my diet. He just said, well, whatever you're doing, just keep walking. What an idiot!!! I fired him and found a new primary care doctor. Food is the absolute foundation for health, I see that so clearly now. I've lost 85 lbs since then.

I think the reason is many doctors don't know, and some feel that if it wasn't taught in medical school, it isn't valid. I think that view is changing with younger doctors coming and the older ones retiring. Just my opinion, I am 73.

As a long time subject (lab rat) in (25+ studies) at a medical school/VA vascular research lab I have been very impressed with the excellent nutritional education levels of the PhD pre and post doctoral students. What floors me is the near ignorance of many MD's when it comes to nutrition. I have heart failure with preserved ejection fraction. If you know what I'm saying you are in my boat, up to a point. I have never been diabetic, I always have great lipid numbers. Because of my "hobby" I have had every test known to be relevant including a very recent heart catherization because I have pulmonary hypertension and liver complications, but still great lab results. Decent cath results. Calcium score 0. I should be very, very healthy but am not because of a terrible sweet tooth. I am fat. Probably the only reason I have such great results is because this doc is RIGHT! I tend to be vegetarian and love things like beans and apples and all things from the garden and orchard. They have saved me so far and I'm 80. Eat your apples and beans!

I’m not familiar with your various medical conditions, but I had a terrible sweet tooth all my life. Recently I had a coughing virus for 3 weeks and was mostly housebound. I only had sugar-free applesauce available. 3 weeks abstinence was all it took to lose a life-long sweet tooth. No more cravings. I wish it happened sooner. I feel like a different person. Sugar is lethal. Good luck 🍀

I would love for you to make a video about how to reverse sarcopenia. I lost a lot of muscle from Covid and am very slowly gaining it back. I do resistance training and HIIT along with Yoga, and am a clinical exercise physiologist, so I have exercise down. There is a lot of conflicting information about nutrition, however. Many scientists say to increase quality protein, which I have done, and I supplement with leucine occasionally. I do have lactose and gluten intolerance, and most likely histamine intolerance. I can't tolerate very much alcohol at all, so when we go out, the bartender is told to make it a tiny amount. I feel sick the next day if we go out to eat, even being careful . I am now 70 and overall healthy, with nothing out of range in my lab work. I have a very high HDL and always have. I definitely would like to gain back more muscle since my body composition shows I should gain about 10 lbs. of muscle. Five would be great but I seem to be holding at 118 lbs. and am 5'6". I feel like the aging population can use all the help we can get to keep our muscle.
@FartyHarley5 ай бұрын
Hi. I’m also a clinical AEP. We get one subject on nutrition and that’s it in our degree. Muscle hypertrophy is a science. Muscle hypertrophy happens as a result of stress on the muscle. Unaccustomed resistance training damages some of the muscle. The muscle is weakened for a few days and then rebuilds the damage and adds a bit more (provided you supply the amino acid building blocks through nutrition). If you just keep doing the same loads or volume you maintain muscle because there is no longer a stress on the muscle requiring further adaptation. If you don’t exercise the muscle at all after the adaptation, the hard earned muscle you added just gets broken down to save metabolic energy. So the key to muscle gain is to work each muscle enough to trigger a stress each time (progressive overload), eat sufficient protein, especially leucine containing protein, spaced every 5 hours if you are just using a quickly absorbed supplement, and then exercise twice a week each muscle so that you do not lose the muscle you gained. Smaller muscles such as deltoids, biceps, triceps and abs can be trained more frequently.

I hope the maker of this video can comment on this: Dr. Neil Barnard has said that "plant stanols" can also help in lowering cholesterol--one can get this in a product called "Benecol," a buttery spread sold in a lot of supermarkets. What is your opinion of this? I bought some (in addition to a plant based diet), but man-o-man is it pricey. Do you happen to know if it really works?

Thank you Dr Liu! Is it healthy to cut bread and rice totally? I did for 2 months and nowadays I feel weak, any advice? I am trying hard to lose weight and have lost 10kg so far and still need to lose another 10kg to reach an ideal weight. Thanks a lot
