Interesting how Czech and Slovak is a bridge between West Slavic and South Slavic, e.g. ostrov (wyspa). It shows how fluently Slavic languages merged one to another, this continuous inteligibility region to region was interrupted by migration of German (Austria) and Hungarian languages to central Europe. In Czech you can see both forms of declination of words like "hrad" you can have "na hradě" (similar to Polish "grad - na gradzie") - same ending like Polish or "na hradu" like in South Slavic (na ovom gradu). Same for other words like "les" - we can say both v lese and v lesu . Seems Czech preserved both evolution type of declination. Czech and Slovak pronunciation share simplification of pronunciation with South Slavic languages.

I'm an Indian who studied in Russia for 5 yrs and Ukraine for 4, starting from 2011. Learnt both languages (my Ukrainian is a little mehhh but I'm pretty confident with my Russian). And when I visited places like Czechia, Macedonia and Serbia, I can communicate by speaking Russian slowly (word by word) and using different synonyms so that they will recognize words with same roots. And voila! They pretty much understood everything most of the time.

And it sounds very funny for a Romanian :)) I suppose in Bulgarian there is the same word or a very similar one to the one in Macedonian, and we may have borrowed it and modified a bit :))

There are a lot of common words in the slavic languages. And there is not macedonian language. It is southwest bulgarian dialect. If you think all slavic languages originated from macedonian you are totally wrong. There is old slavic-church language which is esentially bulgarian language. No such thing as macedonian slavic nation. Macedonians were greek people and modern macedonians are bulgarians who live in this region, but were opressed by yugoslav officials not to declare as such, and after so many years they forgot their origin.

@@BudgetGainsByJJ And by the way, since you like the Polish so much, would you mind teaching me some Macedonian in the future? I, as a native Polish speaker, would like to become a polyglot one day and speak every single Slavic language to make the best of my interpreting career! If you're willing to increase my knowledge of your beautiful language, I'd really appreciate your effort in doing so! I've tried to learn Macedonian in the past and know a few things here and there, but I only learnt those from limited resources and surprisingly wasn't able to find myself a book with dialogues/anecdotes of people describing a situation in the Macedonian language, unlike for the other languages I'm also learning where I have both a phrase book and dialogue book provided (with audio support, that is!). I personally think we should admire the world for what it truly is and all it has to offer for us in terms of culture, heritage and authenticity, paying a bit more attention to even the smallest nations in the world like Macedonia which are very often ignored by bigger countries as a result of superiority, or even poorly recognised as not many people around the world mention such small nations. I am an exception to this disappointing story and absolutely love indulging with people from these small countries when it comes to sharing thoughts and ideas to learn a bit about each other thus ultimately understand the world in a different way one might perceive otherwise!

As a Bosnian, I was able to understand 90-95% from Macedonian (some sentences were spoken completely IDENTICAL the way we speak) and about 40% of Polish. I have reached the conclusuon that understanding between different Slavic languages mostly depend on topics that people talk about. For example, for parts of nature (woods, forest, river, lake, sea, mountain, sky, etc) we all use very, very similar, if not identical words. This video just prooved that fact one more time and this conversation was kinda easy one for both of you. But (mostly) different words used for the verbs are the ones that make us issues in understanding each other. My advace for all future videos: please make a deal with all participants before recording to speak SLOWLY. When I was watching Polish-Bosnian conversation, my first thought was that Bosnian guy should have spoken much more slowly. I am pretty sure you would have understood each other much better. Pozdrav!

I'm native Russian and surprisingly I understand a lot in Macedonian, especially because of pronunciation. For me, it sounds like if you take Russian, use so-called 'archaic' roots in common words, and take out most of the unstressed vowels. But the more I listen to Norbert the less I need to read to hear common Slavic roots under hard (for my untrained Russian ear) Polish phonetics. Thank you, Norbert, for your work!

A brilliant film, I clicked it thinking that Macedonian and Polish are two extreme cases on the spectrum of Slavic languages, but it turned out that the tasks were so cool that they perfectly highlighted very similar words. I really enjoyed watching it, and although I didn't catch as many words as Norbert, when he pointed it out, I thought "well, it's obvious" :D. However, I found it best in the last photo, because I already knew that "wyspa" (island) is a very Polish word and that "ostrów" is the original one. This word appears very often in Polish geography (e.g. Ostrów Tumski in Wrocław) and many Poles are not aware of its original origin.
