Cashew nuts also works well. They add creaminess and thickness to the curries. I tried to ask the Peranakan auntie in KL for her recipe, but she was rude. She just looked at me and said: It's family secret. It's Nonya business!

The dried chillies we get at home is ridiculously spicy. I reckon this gives you the beautiful red colour in your curry, but anyway to get around that spice? I'm going to try and remove the seeds

You should be able find a vegan "Belachan" in online store. Vegetarian people in Malaysia will use vegan "Belachan" made out of Mushroom + Soybean to substitute with any dish that required belachan.

Fantastic recipe video Marion! Congratulations on your new cookbook. I do have one question though. I am not a huge fan of fish and seafood, I therefore do not consume them at all. My dad is a vegetarian so he can't have any meat, fish or seafood whatsoever and my mom is like me in the sense that she is not a fan of seafood and does not consume it either. What would you recommend as a vegetarian alternative to shrimp paste?
