Agreed. As odd it may seem from reading it, it really is a fair compromise to make in practice. Assuming that the game can run at 60 fps in handheld, they should’ve just let it be 60 across the board, and kept the shadow portion at 30 fps

It does admittedly chug down to the low 40s in the first 3D section of modern Chemical Plant, but it quickly climbs back to 60 and generally remains there after that part through the rest of the stage. That first stretch was always a troublesome area on 360/PS3 too, could even chug some PC's of the time.

It also drops during the "going down" segment in Speed Highway. Basically it has the same rough patches as the original PC version did. I think those got fixed by fans at some point using a more optimized renderer.

On an unmodded Switch without any undervolting/overclocking? Not many. Many Switch games have a hard enough time hitting 30 as is. Generations is a notable exception because it doesn't need overclocking to hit a mostly stable 60, which is why it got this video. But if you're willing to mod your Switch, then many Switch games are capable of running at 60fps. Hell you can run BotW and TotK at 60fps while the console runs cooler and quieter than normal. Nintendo was EXTREMELY conservative in how far they downclocked their chips, probably for the sake of battery life.

Modded Switches have tons of cool benefits including overclocking, mods, emulators, homebrew games and apps, and even the ability to install Android or Linux if you're into that

I KNEW it was possible to get Generations running at 60 on Switch without too unrealistic levels of work. What the heck, why isn't this in the vanilla release? I was a bit disappointed when it wasn't 60 thinking it should probably be possible, but thought it was at least understandable that they did 30 because 60 would probably require a lot more work, but now knowing that it was possible easily I'm just kinda ticked now. Also vindicated against people who kept telling me it wasn't possible because "tHe SwItCh Is ToO pAtHeTiC aNd WeAk." Because that's another thing, the 30fps release clearly just makes the Switch look worse than it actually is, when no it IS powerful enough to run Generations at 60, and yet because they just decided not to for...reasons, it lead to people dunking on the Switch way more than the system actually deserves. Yeah it's underpowered, but not THAT underpowered.

As many people point out, there are a few drops here and there, but it's pretty stable overall, and it makes up for playing at 720p and 60fps during the game. Also, the 31.5 fps cap is very strange and makes it less fluid than 30fps. After several patches, Sega has not solved it. And I don't know if you knew, but Sonic Superstars runs at 720p and 60fps on handheld mode, while on dock it uses exactly the same graphic settings at the same resolution, when moded to 1080p it can reach 60fps on the 99% of the game. It would have been nice to put dynamic resolution for those levels, or lower those areas to 900p, or something like that. There are things with Sega that are difficult to understand.

This reminds me of that early Bomber Man game for Switch. The game initially released 1080p 30fps. It was actually a little irritating keeping track of such fast moving characters. They later patched the game to run at 720p 60fps and it was much better.

It's not the first time they give the Switch version the shorter end of the stick. TSR, which no one plays, didn't have the cinematic intro because space reasons supposedly. Samba de Amigo Party Central had a story mode on Apple Arcade instead of switch

Specfically they're probably using ReverseNX to use portable mode visuals while docked. System clocks are heavily downgraded in portable mode normally but this allows you to use the docked clocks when running portable mode. So in a way this is kinda an "overclock" but not really. Seems like an easy patch from Sega to add a graphics or performance mode to the game though.

They do dynamic resolution in both handheld and dock modes, but the game's resolution goes down to sub 500p on handheld AND dock since the game would run like absolute garbage, along with the battery degrading

If they are going to bring 60fps to sonic on the switch then at the very least they'd have a toggle to choose. Anything else would be madness.

Of course, the Switch is fully capable of running Generations on 60fps. Shadow Generations though… probably not. Just because of the overworld. So SEGA probably opted to offer consistency between the two games. Of course, it’s still bs, because they totally should have offered an option to toggle 60fps at least in Sonic Gen, but oh well.

They have to make the screen 1080p. I have ran into too many games where 720p's aliasing was very chunky, and I had to manually increase the resolution since TAA failed to resolve cleanly. Think of it like this; 720p is absolutely fine downsampled, but 1080p also makes the game less jaggy and blurry without downsampling.

It’s closer to a ps4 than anything. The Wii U was already more powerful than the ps3/360 gen and the switch is significantly more powerful than the Wii U was. It’s not quite as powerful as a ps4 / Xbox One but it’s definitely the closest in terms of generation.

They can be fixed easily, but it requires overclocking. Specifically, that engine suffers from some strange memory bandwidth bottleneck, so simply overclocking the RAM will fix most performance issues.

@@XP9724 A lot of Switch games run lower than 720p, honestly a locked 720p is already pretty damn good image quality for a 3rd party Switch game. I think 1080p wasn't the right choice for this game. It's sharp, but still looks very jaggy due to the complete lack of anti-aliasing, and it hits the framerate HARD. (When uncapped on Switch without any oc, Gens runs at about 30-50fps at 1080p, and mostly locked 60fps at 720p)

Technically every game on Switch has two performance modes, one for portable and another for docked. Very few if any have dedicated performance vs fidelity modes though, as that choice started with Sony/MS's mid-gen hardware refreshes (PS4 Pro and Xbox One X)

Fans have also managed to figure out how to alter Classics Physics in such a way that better emulates the genesis games. Needless to say, this wasn’t implemented in any version of the remaster, so we still don’t really have Classic Sonic in Generations. Then again, the ROM of the Switch version is available online, so it’s in the modders hands now 👀
