Many thanks for the process. I've got a 1957 Excelsior Consort in the garage in bits. Your videos give me the insight to try and do it myself. Needless to say all the parts need a respray although someone previously done a decent job, just not a colour for me. Any tips on where to find a decent company to chrome the wheels, sadly they painted those as well. Love watching these :-)
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Alistair, great to hear from you and wow what an amazing bike! You must be very proud... not sure I can advise on the chroming, haven't had any done for years, as the price left a bitter taste, it was on some classic car bumpers, I could have bought new ones for less than half the price of the chroming, it's just a ridiculously expensive process now, but I don't think there really are that many companies out there that specialise in bike parts, it's more an indisutrial process, so if I was looking for that service, I'd just contact my nearest plating works and see what they can do for me! A lot of the time they'll treat it as a 'tea' money job and chuck it in with a load of industrial stuff, so make sure if you're gonna pay for the expense of chroming that you're getting treated like a customer and not a back door job as I found happens with the bigger companies... best of luck with your project, let us know how it goes!!

Well pleased for you Del , no bike is perfect and no bike does everything , GOK. I’ve had enough in my time to come to know that , I’ve had a gold star and a gold wing and an awful lot in between but this bike really is a formidable tourer , ride the torque between 3and 4 thousand RPM and on long journeys it will return in excess of 200 miles to the tank no problem , the journalists who claim they get 140 miles per tank are obviously riding them like they ride an R1 on a track day . Yes it’s a heavy bike and no it’s not a DRZ 400 so the majority of us won’t be off-roading with them but that’s not what we bought them for , we bought them because they are a quality bike and they’re made in Britain , do the Hinckley tour and see them being produced from start to finish. BTW , I noticed that the rear shock is white so it’s definitely not a green one 😢 . Ride safe mate , C .

Hi Gus, it's only lift volatile for about the first 48hrs, but of course it cures from the outside in, so if you're gonna rub it back before re-coating, you'll expose less cured paint, but if you gave it a couple of months, it's practically inert by then, so coats up just fine...!

Hi Colin, think the product you're referring to is Pet Seal, it's a 2 part expoy resin that you roll round the inside to form a skin... but one thing concerns me, and that's the pin holes you mentioned.. the idea of the Pet Seal is to stablise a rusty interior and stop the flakes of rust breaking free and blocking up the fuel system, it's not designed to seal a perforated tank... I would seriously recommend mate if you have pin holes in that tank due to rust, then just replace it... you can't fix that , if it's rotted through, it's not safe, secondhand tank from Ebay maybe?? And if it's a super rare bike and you can't find one, then I'd take the tank to a professional welder and have all the rusty metal cut out and replaced, if possible... and it'll need to be TIG welded and pressure tested afterwards before you use it... good luck with it my friend, sorry if it's bad news....

Hi buddy, yes indeed, and no indeed! I am on the Explorer, traded down to free up funds for the next project of which the front runner is currently a Harley, but nothing like you think, it's gotta be radical and daft, so need a donor bike I can cut up a bit !!

Couple of quick question Delboy, is your Sealey battery charger maintainer suitable for gel batteries? And what are your thoughts on the different types of batteries? Thanks bud.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 4 жыл бұрын
The Sealey battery charger is switchable between Lithium and Lead Acid, so will service both types.

I flattened my z750 ltd tank with 1200 after painting it with tough gloss black and then compound, polish and wax (took forever) it was like deep wet paint after with no orange peel. Shame the petrol had it 😢

Yes indeed mate, you need to leave it to fully cure for at least 3 months and then it's pretty much petrol proof, unless of course you literally pour it on !

Looks good del you done a good job on the tank loving the painting videos . Any advice on repairing stone chips I have some on my front forks and Wana get them sorted I have the paint match and an idea on how to do it but any tips would be awsome. Keep up the good work it be on the road in no time 👍👍👍👍

Hi buddy, that's a great project, and one you can really get in to and enjoy... I've always found the trick with paint chips is to fill them, obviously give the fork legs a rub down to make sure that all the loose paint is removed, but where the chips remain, they will always show unless you either rub all the paint off and trip the legs bare before you start, or get some fine filler in there and block sand them flat... there's no other way round it mate, because the new paint will show them up straight away... I've had some great success on the fighter build with the Dolphin Glaze filler, it's not really for filling dents, it's more a product for filling imperfections, it's quite expensive at £20-odd a bottle, but I got a special half-price deal and it's lasted me the whole job so far... can't really say any more than that buddy, other than de-greasing the rubbed down surface is essential, then a light tack coat just to prep the surface, then 5mins wait, and start laying the paint on with at least 15mins between coats, and don't overload it ! See how you get on, it's all about taking your time and having the patience to enjoy it !

@@Moonfleet41 thanks del info like that is priceless thanks, I'll get cracking on it when the paint arrives next week now I'll get some dolphin glaze in the mean time too iv done a few bits in Matt black and they have gone pritty good it's just a bit scary when doing bigger bits but like you said I'll take my time and all should be good, I'll probably be watching one one your videos while I'm doing it too, Thanks again del your input is like gold I can't thank you enough 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

You're welcome mate, the least I can do, one more thing I forgot to mention, 'block sanding'.. when you use the wet sand paper, get yourself a foam block, nothing harder than that, don't use wood or anything... but something a tiny bit more yielding... this will mean the paper is flat and , therefore, only rubs the high spots, which is what you wanna do... anyway, the rest is down to you fellah, so good luck with it and I want some photos when it's done lol
