Ya just gotta love that Ghost Ring sight. You’ve got a 590 SP there neighbor and in my opinion the most durable, dependable pump action for the money. The only shotgun to pass the military’s 3000 round torture test. I guess Mossberg knows how to make a pump gun.

i think the 870 wingmaster i shoot is smoother and better put together than any Mossberg I've seen. i must say though the wingmaster has better craftsmanship then other 870 shotguns. if ur Mossberg dosnt drop shells it will do anything u need at a good price but the 870 feels tighter and smoother.

***** the price on the wingmaster is expensive but used it is the same as the Mossberg new and mine had less than 100 shells put threw it so it was new. I like the push button safety but i see y people like the thumb safety. now i had this gun for a bit i feel that it was worth every $ because it is so smooth. I swirled around what choices to make for a 3-gun SHTF arsenal for myself. I settled n the CZ 75 SP-01 for a pistol and 590A1 for a shotgun. no real internal debate for either of them once I researched them enough. They just seem that good. The rifle is another story. I'm kind of in between a PTR-91, vz58, or perhaps in the semi-distant future (3-5 years), an 805 BREN S1 (assuming they're CA legal) once they drop in price.

I have Mossberg and Remington. And I would agree... But my Mossberg started having light primer strikes 5 days after I got it, with multiple brands of shells. I shot about 200 rounds through it... Then it would shoot about half the time. So it's back at the factory.

The heavy barrel was a US Navy/ USMC requirement... They tend to have had problems with barrel dents with thin shotgun barrels in ship hatchway accidents... Whacking into a metal ship with sharp edges will do that.

I don’t like Mossbergs. I love em. I got like 12 of em. From 10” barrel to Shockwaves to 590’s and an 835. Every one’s a gem. Magpul furniture really enhances the ergonomics and improves the look. I bought a 590M and had the barrel externally threaded to accept the KSG adapter for the Silencerco Salvo 12 and it is so much fun. With Magpul stock and forearm and an Eotech 512 using subsonic shells it’s hearing safe and reduced recoil it’s well balanced and fun on a bun. We named it Mr.Sluggo! 😮

5 years later. Hickok45 thank you for this review of the Mossberg 590. My 1999 production 590SP is parkerized with ghost ring sights. I’ve owned this one for several years and have a couple thousand rounds of various ammo through it. Never a hiccup. I’ve made upgrades to it along the way. Replacing the polymer safety switch and trigger assembly with metal units and the follower with a polished red stainless steel GG&G unit along with a Wolff extra power magazine tube spring. A Magpul buttstock replaced the factory unit as I’ve rather short arms. A railed fore end a a 300 lumen Streamlight pretty much complete all that. I’d trust this 590 anywhere.

Picked up a Mossberg 500 with my grandfather a few weeks ago. I got to shooting it this weekend and must've put around 100 shots through it in a mix of 2 and 3/4 and 3 inch buckshot 00 and 000 and some 1 and a quarter ounce slugs. Never had any problems and the barrel never got hot. Mossberg makes some great shotguns.

I bought a 590, after your first 590 A1 video. Couldn't find an A1 locally, but found the regular 590. Mine has a heat shield on top of the barrel, with a front bead sight. I believe it has what they consider a matte blued finish.

hickok45 A few things that I like about the Mossberg. 1. The shell lifter is out of the way when loading. You can drop a round in the loading port and it doesn't get kicked out. Then it's just a gentle push into the magazine. 2. When reloading, nothing is trying to get a grip on my gloves. 3. When wearing gloves, the safety is much easier to operate than trying to move a button. I fought my Remington for years until I discovered a Mossberg.

I went with the 590 Mariner Persuader for home defense. I love it. What's weird is the info-sheet that came with it says it has the heavy wall barrel and I thought that was only for the 590A1 but that is what it said. Great gun. Especially after I broke it in.

I really like my 590, the reason I picked it over the 870 was not the weight difference in fact I didn't notice the weight difference . I bought the 590 because i didn't have to release my grip to charge the first round. I felt in case of quick reaction it was one less move I had to remember. Nice video .

The old 870's and more especialy the old 870P's are still my favorites. Having said that, I've put a lot of ammo through the 590A1 and it's a good shotgun! If the 590A1 would get as slick as a Wingmaster from the 50's, or 60's it would be a tough choice. Kind of like a old Smith that is still in time and slick as glass through the double action stroke.

i bought a used mossberg 500 with a short barrel. quite a lot of these shotguns were brought to russia in the 1990s. satisfied with the purchase. everything is in its place and nothing superfluous. i'm already so used to it that i feel it as a part of my body. disassembling and assembling is simple, cleaning is easy. many spare parts can be ordered from a turner. except for the barrel, bolt and receiver (by law). an excellent product for close combat

Purchased 590 Special Purchase (50645) in 2013 ($319) Heat shield, 20in, 9shot, bead sight, bayonet lug. Changed it over (2016) to the retro look (trenchgun) walnut stock, corn cob forend, M7 bayonet, M1 Garand olive drab canvas sling. After 8 years, action is smooth as silk. I just got a 590 and it is matte receiver, 20" (20.75), ghost sight, barrel shield, bayonet lug, synthetic stock, for $399 and as I read more I think I have a good deal. Sure seems I have an A1 without the heavy barrel unless BBL1 is that. I'll assume BBL1 is blued barrel though. Great review..

Hopefully getting one soon, been waiting forever to buy a 590. I usually agree with Hickok on most things but I have to make a case for the heatshield. People always say: they have no use, you won't be shooting that much. I BEG to differ. Anyone who has shot more than maybe 20 or more rounds has probably accidentally touched the barrel and got scorched! I think it's a great addition.

I just got a 590 brand new for $250. The guy bought it and never shot it. Can't wait to break it in. Always loved the mossberg 500/590 as a beater gun. Use an 870 TB for trap though...... I like the 870 and 590 pretty much equally.
