We sold out completely from CA & spent the next 11 1/2 yrs looking for our forever home. We also hoped to find the area / hometown before the rig gave up the ghost. We were fortunate because we found our new hometown as we entered KY. We knew within 3 days! So about 3 months later, we had our dream home (on 1/2 acre, trees & 2 car garage for hubby) and donated the rig to DAV - so we took a tax right off the next spring on our donation! We had no regrets of traveling full-time or resettling. (We were able to purchase at local liquidators for estate sales 1/2 of what we needed only to furnish our new home)

I have a home in Sunriver Oregon and boondock in Quartzite in a 22’ Artic Fox. 7 months in Oregon, 5 month in Arizona. With solar and lithium batteries I run anything that I can at home. With Starlink I’m never without internet access or tv. Love South LaPosa in Q. Walking 3-6 miles a day in the winter is going to extend my life. Thankful for friends and chores to keep busy. Last winter in Quartzite I did 4 solar installations for free because I could. Love your videos and common sense attitude. ❤

Thanks Donald! You must have a good clearing free of trees in Sunriver. I am actually headed to your neck of the woods. I love that area! And it sounds like you have a good life with the Oregon/Arizona mix.

Hi Liz. Here's what we did, sold the house, bought the 5th wheel found a inexpensive but very good rental. So we travel as much as we can and don't have to worry about the upkeep of the house and we have a base to come back to when we need to. That's the way our exit plans are. Till next week be safe and be happy ❤❤❤

I have a travel trailer and live alone, with my dog, and I move twice a year too. I spend winters in Quartzsite, Arizona and I sell my products at the craft fairs here, and then I work camp for the summers in higher elevations like Hualapai Mountain Park near Kingman, AZ. there is nothing wrong with moving twice a year. it was so refreshing to hear someone excited about doing exactly what Im doing. Go Liz go!

It is really good to have an exit plan. I used to do home health and went to MANY RV's that people had traveled in for years until unable to. Problems faced were size- when you have certain surgeries like knee or hip being stuck in a small trailer in the winter can not only inhibit rehabilitation by limiting aerobic and walking exercise, but be tricky especially if you have your bed over a cab or up a ladder. It also can be depressing to be trapped in a small space for prolonged periods. This was fairly common. Durability- most of them were falling apart after 10-20 years of living. Mobility- loss can sneak up on you. With less mobility which tends to follow living in a small space quicker when you can't move around, walking 12-15 feet instead of 60 to 150 feet normally inside, paying to get things fixed becomes necessary and for many unaffordable. It just creeps up on people. Parks- rents become the new hell as people pay as much for the RV spot as for a double wide because the lots are the same and you still are expected to maintain your area. and are subject to rent raises, selling out of parks etc. BUY if planning to park. Unfortunately also comes stigma of living in an RV because presumably you couldn't get a house. Even if the RV is more than a house... people think that way.
@LizAmazing
@LizAmazing Жыл бұрын
Good points, thanks for sharing. Yes, I've had camping neighbors with mobility problems and I think living in an RV can make it worse bc not much walking around can happen inside. Thanks for watching.

Really good advice, Liz! As a recovering real estate agent, and real estate investor, my first choice would be to lease out the home. That being said, being a landlord isn’t for everyone, especially if you don’t live nearby. You can always hire a management company to take care of the property. Once that becomes a source of income for you, you may want to leave it as a rental property for a long time. You always have the option of moving back in someday and avoiding the costs of purchasing another home.

It's a recurring theme here in RV world. Many people use RVing as a way to escape from something. Perhaps they can't afford the house they are living in so they buy a RV with the proceeds of the house sale. Then it becomes painfully obvious how expensive that can be. But now they may not be able to afford to buy back a house. In a nutshell... Huge difference in being a part-timer and a full-timer without a house to go back to when you want or need to.

Last 4 years we sold both homes, purchased property in my hometown across the road from my dad. We have built a 50x60 barn with a 1700 sq Ft 2 bed 2 bath apartment. Our middle bay is large enough for Class A with full hookups. We’re not full timers just some-timers. Leaving this week..headed towards Alaska for a 6 month adventure and we can’t wait.

Great video, Liz! It's so important to have an exit plan. In our case we will sell our house, because it's just not retirement friendly. Too many stairs, and too much room to maintain for the long term. It has a big beautiful yard, but eventually that will become a big, big job. We will sell it, and put the money in savings for a future home. Travel until it's not fun anymore. And then buy a smaller home with a floor plan better suited to our future needs.

At some point, many people simply will not be able for independent living. Because of access issues, an RV is more difficult for to live in than a house, apartment, or assisted living. RVs are more difficult to heat or keep cool. RVs have less space. Any exit plan needs a financial plan to afford it. Without a financial plan, there is no plan. When a person sells their RV at a depreciated price, do they have enough money to rent or buy something else? Does a person have enough money for assisted living? The older you live, the more likely you will need assisted living? Assisted living can easily cost $60,000 to $100,000 per year. If you can buy long-term care insurance, buy it when you can.
@LizAmazing
@LizAmazing Жыл бұрын
Yes, so much to think about David. RV life is so affordable I am thinking that the depreciating cost is not a big deal for many. Cost of living so low, no property taxes, often no utilities. No yard to take care of, etc. Definitely access issues are a factor! Many folks do age in place and get a ramp put in. That can help. Long term care insurance is a great tip, thank you!!

Great video Liz!! We sold our home, everything in 2017. Lived and worked in Ontario Canada in summers and winters in Arizona. Until the infamous 2020! We could not winter in 2021-2021 in Arizona could not cross border. We stayed with family in their home that winter. Then friends told us how afforable it was to buy homes in Atlantic Canada. So we ended up buying a home again. Sold our 5th wheel and have intention to buy a travel trailer in a few years and head south in winters again. I really miss RV'ing. Lucky for me my job is at an RV dealer!!! I am finding older people are buying units to park at land or campgrounds alot while still keeping their homes. Safe travels and great health Liz!

I sold everything last summer and started RVing full time. I have kids living in the Northwest and Southwest. I love traveling and seeing and doing new things as I travel my yearly circuit north/south. I can always pair my activities down along the way and do a quicker drive north/south and then stay in place for 6 months in the future. I don't like cold winters or hot summers, so moving north/south with the seasons will work best for me in the long term.
@LizAmazing

Wow, that sounds awesome. I would never get tired of going from Southwest to the Northwest either! Heck, I could fulltime a year and never leave Arizona! Or California for that matter. Thanks for your comment, Gloria and see you in the road.

We don't have an exit plan. 14 years on the road and 5 different rigs. During our Church ministry years- we bought a Cherokee Trailer. We met up with our daughter, we traveled a little in it, we were in an area where you could go to three state parks and stay for 2 weeks at a time. Our first vacation in it, we fell in love with living in it. We made all the reservations for the entire 6 mo. of "summer" and then moved back into our apt. (We were paying rent on two areas). The next season, we found a land lease and gave up the apt. and began to sell everything and go through stuff. We were called out of ministry that spring but before that happened, we had purchased our 2nd travel trailer- getting a great deal on the previous one for trade. We lived in it for 3 years- work camped for 3 seasons before buying a house that sucked us dry. We missed living on the road. So, 3 1/2 years later we left our really good jobs, sold the house, and traded the trailer in for our 3rd rig- A motorhome- A Terrible Turdy Terra 30 ft- we put 8,000 miles on her in 3 mo.! We traded her in for a rig that would be livable for our work camping adventures. Roonie-34 ft- she made it up the mountains and down, crisscrossing the country with no real issues until she did have them. We fixed everything, but she was getting older, and at 22 she retired. We traded her in for a lot less but bought our nice one- 44 ft. This is not our final one- we are hoping to downsize her but when- we don't know. We travel a bit less now- To Montana via NE and back to TX currently. We would love to get out more, but not yet. Some health issues keep us near dh hometown where we have great medical care. I work from home so it doesn't matter where we go. No exit plan yet, we tried that, it didn't work for us.

Hey Liz. Lot's of good info here. Thank you. We sold the house to go full time and our realtor told us to compare the cost of storing and shipping our 30 year old furniture vs. buying new when we decide on the new house in about 5 years (maybe more, maybe less). We both agree we will probably have a different style by then, so we sold or donated everything. As far as the RV mattress, it was horrible. We did upgrade.

We have been full time in a sprinter van for 3.5 years. When we sold our home we loaned that money to our son who lives in Ireland. He purchased a home. He will it repayed in about 10 years. We have a room at his home. We lived where there is snow at least 6 months out if the year. We are SO done with shoveling snow. Our exit plan is a senior park in moderate climate that has a grocery store very close. I don't drive, so when hubby can't either, that means exit plan engaged.

I think renting your house until you know for sure what you want to do is the best thing to do. I just bought a large lot with a park model and extra rv hookup outside of Yuma. The lady I bought it from had renting the extra space for $350 a month and I’ve been told that is cheap. Anyway my wife and I are looking forward to fixing the place up and getting away from the long dark wet winters in Washington state. Cheers

We plan to keep our PNW home from spring & summer/early fall and live in our RV in Nevada/Arizona in the late fall & winter. We are planners as well. We have a truck camper now but are looking to purchase a Reflection 260 :p. It is going to be quite an adjustment to go from working 60+ hr weeks (self employed) to 10hr weeks for 5 -6 mo at a time. You'd be very short sighted to sell your house, unless you were going to downsize anyway and buy another smaller house later. Rent your house out as Liz says, and hire a property management firm to handle maintenance. Then when you're done with full time RVing, you have someplace to go back to. If you don't have enough money to full time RV while keeping your house, it's not for you.
@LizAmazing

Or you could just live stationary in your RV if you get too old. Homes suck up so much money: property taxes, maintenance, roof, yard, it's endless. And I used to be a Realtor so that says a lot.

We have a travel trailer on our own land that stays stationary and a truck camper to travel with. We also still have a house yet. The house will be sold soon and we will spends summers in travel trailer in WI and travel in the late fall and winter months in our truck camper down south. You are right you can never predict the future and you always need an exit plan.

Great advice. I am going to buy a property where there are people around that can check on me if I get I’ll and can contact my family. Also I discussed with my sons if they would vacation there if I expired and they said yes. Anywhere but CA! They will outlaw any gas or diesel vehicles! 😢 Finally when done driving the beast I can drive to the beast in the car or public transportation and enjoy it until the last curtain call! I'm 65 and tried living nomadic but didn't like it. I just liked the idea of living simply, not traveling all the time. So I sold my house and moved into a park model (that I remodeled) in an rv park where you own your lot. I like the community atmosphere with the comforts of home. Still giving some thought to selling this and doing a cargo trailer conversion and living in a couple parks 6 months at a time. The interest on the money from the sale would pay for most of my lot rent fees

Great topic done well. We’re keeping the house & letting our son & his family live in it while we’re traveling. Enter plan? Get rid of all the crap in the house! We’ve lived her 26yrs & the 4 kids didn’t take all their stuff with them! We’re going to use most of the storage space in the basement for our “keeper” stuff. I see it as an opportunity to get rid of furniture I’m er we’re not liking anymore.

Well im in the uk…i dont think our country is big enough to go full time. But i had an uncle he sold his 5 bedroom house ,and bought a one bed flat..(appartment) in a block..he would go caravanning whenever his heart desired…then when things got a little tiresome he would saddle up and trudge back up the M1 or whichever road he needed back to the old flatstead.then maybe after some R and R.a month or so later head out again onto the prairie..after reading his bills and mail.. Dont give up your channel Liz…we would all miss you..

Why one OR the other? Nearly ALL highway exits have both OFF and ON ramps. Having an “Exit” where the coach can “sleep” comfortably while we do something else, allows us to choose both the timing & duration of each lifestyle without being forced into one OR the other. TWO ramps are way better than ONE!

Hi Liz, My wife & I hit the road in 2000, I was 50 years old and retired from Military. We would travel around and visit family. In 2010 wife was hospitalized and had a colostomy and had to use a bag. We were staying outside Ellsworth Maine when she was hospitalized for 3 weeks. She survived and eventually had reattachment. So we kept moving around in our rv. In 2018 she developed early signs of Alzheimer’s and was afraid to be in the Motorhome. We sold the rv and moved into a condo in Tampa near her daughter and family. We moved in with just very basics. We brought a lamp and our personal stuff from rv so we had to furnish the condo. Btw, you might caution people about putting their stuff in storage and paying for 3-10 years. Most stuff can be replaced with the money not being used for storage fees. (We were lucky, I own a property in a small town in Colorado that has 2 railroad boxcars that I use for storage. I used them since 1988. (Imagine storage costs for 34 years.). My cousins live nearby and watch out for me.). Enjoy watching your channel and please keep smiling. Bill & Kathy
