I appreciate your embodiment of the "middle ground" approach! I always emphasize, "I am a Reform Jew, I am not secular (although its fine to be secular)." We go to shabbat services and torah study every week. Just because I don't observe tzniut in an orthodox way does not mean that I am not religious! I try to just dress in a way that I feel is respectful towards myself and those around me.

I do the same. In fact for being one of the younger members, and I'm 38 so that's saying something, at Friday night service, I'm one of the more modest dressers for people in my age range and that is what I am comfortable with. But also too, when I go out (I live in a primarily Orthodox neighborhood) when I moved here I changed the way I dress to be more modest simply out of respect for my Orthodox neighbors.

9:45 this is the heart of it... when women are asked to do things men aren't for the sake of civility in society or within a religion, that's sexism. I'm glad you found a middle ground you're comfortable with and please don't listen to anyone who questions how you dress or why you don't cover your hair. Modesty (whatever that even means) should always be a woman's choice.

Let's e honest. The whole "modesty" and covering areas of women's bodies has nothing to do with religion. It's about control. It amazes me how prevalent this is in multiple religions. Jewish, Muslim, Christian. Women are brow beaten with religion to control them because men can't control themselves. In Christianity, Adam and Eve, the properted original humans, were naked. If you believe that God (whatever name or version you prefer) created people, then God has seen it all before. If a woman chooses to cover herself and/or her hair, that is her choice. It has absolutely nothing to do with how religious she is.

I think the way you see modesty (as an outsider) is so different to my lived experience. I'm not experiencing this horrible oppression that I need to be saved from! I think there's a freedom in not ever feeling like I'm being judged by my body. Or not feeling like I need to dress to please anyone. Also, men and women are different - biologically, psychologically etc. - so it baffles me that people have a hard time grasping why there would be different religious laws for men and women. Of course there would be.

Marion I think it’s really cool you shared this. As someone who comes from the same or similar background as you and who chose to become baalas teshuva, I always think of you as refined and wholesome. I think it’s crazy that people feel the need to question your clothing and hair choices. There is more than one kind of Jew in the world and in these times especially we need Jews of every type putting a positive light out there. Keep doing what you’re doing.

One major rule I remember was having your shirt tucked in at all times, that particular rule was that all students had to follow. It was nice to hear your experience and to see that it parallels my own in many ways. I spent time in Israel and the US living in the Orthodox community before finding my home in the Conservative movement, and my standards of modesty have changed a lot throughout my journey. It was freeing for me to realize that Orthodoxy is only a single piece of the beautifully diverse tapestry that is Am Yisrael-that they do not hold the monopoly on Jewish wisdom and tradition. I realized that tznius is so much more behavioral than sartorial and that frum dress in and of itself has little to do with actual modesty. Loved your video as always!

I absolutely love your videos. I am in the process of converting and it is so refreshing to hear how similar the journey to a meaningful, Jewish identity and life is for someone that grew up Jewish vs someone converting. At the end of the day we each have to decide for ourselves what is important to us and how we practice our faith, including how we dress. I tell people all of the time when questioned about all of the ‘laws’ that, “Judaism has set me free.”

Haha, I remember the fingertip measurement for shorts at camp! I started wearing skirts and dresses around the time I got engaged but it really wasn’t about projecting any type of image, I just think my shape looks better in them. I do wear pants sometimes now but modesty to me is a personal thing which shows how I respect my body and desire respect from others so I dress in a way that is most flattering and that is hard to achieve with pants for my short leg self, lol!

I'm out of college, married, just turned 30, and I'm in the middle of that same type of identity crisis right now! Trying to redefine what religion/spirituality mean to me while working through trauma and pushing back on a lot of negative programming/brainwashing I received in childhood through college; a lot of it related to female issues. Love the powerful message that if someone else has a problem with what you're wearing that's their issue not yours - I was taught the opposite, that I was constantly responsible for the thoughts and comfort of those (men specifically) around me. Working hard to gain freedom from that. So glad there are content creators like you out there offering girls and women a different, more empowering, and TRUE message! 👏👏👏

Your videos are incredibly fun to watch and I think vital for mixed families (for extended non Jewish family in my case). About at the 7 minute mark you speak about non-religious Jews and this is a huge part that many folks who don't know about Judaism and have trouble with. It's hard to believe for most that many Israelis are not religious. I've always equated it to here in America.....lots of folks celebrate Christmas and Easter but aren't very religious. My husband who is not Jewish, calls Christians who aren't religious and maybe only go to Church on Easter & Christmas....he calls them "Chreasters". Similarly he calls Jewish folks who only go on High Holy days "Rosh Kippers". :D I'm so very grateful that we where raised in a space that gave us a choice

Love this! I think it's so good for people to be allowed to explore and choose their identity and perceptions. I totally agree with your thoughts on modesty - it's nobody else's business. In some ways I dress modestly like covering my shoulders and knees, but I also have piercings, used to dye my hair bright pink (I had to stop because it was damaging my hair too much) and even had an undercut at one point. How we look doesn't make us bad people, but how we treat others can definitely! Your school story reminded me of my own experiences. I went to an all girls grammar school in the UK and they only introduced trousers two years before I joined and used to measure our skirts (UK school uniform is standard practice). They used to stand at the school gates with face wipes to make us remove make up too... The memories 😂

Thank you for sharing this! We lived in Japan for three years and I decided to set aside all of my "sexy" clothes for the simple fact that Japanese people don't do that and they will stare. On holiday and in my life now I find I'm no longer comfortable showing much skin unless I'm swimming. I’ve always been shy and modest about my body. I’ve gotten grief about nursing in front of my childless sibs. When I nursed my babies in private, I would cover the back of their head and wrap them so they were used to it, they didn’t give me trouble in public. But I also had the type with the boning around the neck. Took public strolls while nursing, the shawl aided as a sling.

Yes, "honor my body." That is the approach to modesty I have landed on as well. I think of it as appreciating and loving all that my body has done for me, and I want to only share it with those who also appreciate and honor it, and not those who would look upon it with criticism. Even if it's not right for them to criticize it, I feel like it's the world we live in, and I personally don't feel like I am honoring my body if I use it to combat this thing that needs to be changed in our world around how women's bodies are scrutinized. But I am grateful that I can approach modesty from my own inner beliefs and not have them dictated to me from the outside. I think that's the most important thing and I appreciate hearing your own journey with modesty.

I am watching this video as I visit my son in Israel on his gap year with a Conservative program. We attended a lively and meaningful Conservative service Shabbat morning here in the main Masorti synagogue. They also have a large learning center with many programs. Perhaps the movement has strengthened since you were here.

When I was married my mother in law used to criticize me for wearing pants. She is part of the Hispanic church where you can’t cut your hair and you have to wear dresses and skirts. I never understood it but that’s the way it is. I never liked visiting her church they made me feel uncomfortable. I just like pants better.

I've always loved classic styles of apparel and have never been tempted to dress immodestly. That's just who I am. I"m more Ingrid Bergman than Madonna,, but I admire both of those women.. My mother and I never had battles over my clothing choices because we generally liked the same styles. I wore mini skirts during that era, but came to realize that chopped off skirts ruined the proportions of otherwise nice clothing. My grandmother who was a professional seamstress pointed that out to me. When I retired I had someone make me 3 dozen washable linen skirts in solids and subtle patterns. Together with my variety of tops and jackets, I feel comfortable and attractively dressed wherever I go. I live in a warm climate and love linen year round. Marion, you always look very nice, and I love your dresses. When I saw your wedding pictures and your beautiful gown, I knew you had impeccable taste in clothing and personal style.

I love your story. I feel like it's partially a generational thing, I am not Jewish but growing up my mother required that my sister and I wear a dress or skirt to church. Some people see wearing a certain kind of clothing as a way to be respectful. I do feel like there is an element of sexism in a lot of our "old ways" when we think about many different religions and societal customs around the world. What I’ve seen of orthodox women who keep completely covered is that they do so willingly and happily. So, ok for them. But modesty is, just as you say, a fluid concept that changes by how one feels at different times of life in different contexts. The range of styles worn by women is so broad that for most of us there are lots of good choices that let us be true to ourselves in peace. I think giving each other space to live with integrity is very important.

Thank you so much for making this video! I was brought up catholic and converted to Islam and I have been struggling for a long time as a convert and also as a woman dressing modestly. I cover A LOT compared to most other Australian women here. I wear long legged pants all year, leggings at home but covering my behind when I go out, never showing my chest etc. wearing longer sleeved merely for sun protection as I am very fair. But i keep feeling guilty. When I meet someone wh9 is more religious I think oh no, should I be dressing like she does? (Long full length dresses and sleeved, very loose style). I don’t wear the scarf, I used to, but stopped after several months. I did that mainly to please my family (stopping it) but now I’m happy with that decision. Your video was not at all what I expected and I valued your honesty so much. We don’t have to be all the same, and you have to do what you feel is right. Now I feel a bit better and am excited to see how I go too. I need to cut the feelings of guilt re not being like other women in our area of the city. I am the same too, I cover to hide my old mum body lol. 5 kids has done a lot of bad things to my mid section. Wow! I loved reading this, we have a lot of similarities! I was Muslim and am currently converting to Catholicism, but Islam will always hold a special place in my heart and I am greatful for all of the lessons it taught me. I also used to nanny for a Jewish family! Please don’t feel like you need to compare your clothing choices to anyone elses! As someone who had no contact with Jewish people (not so common in my country) this is very interesting. Also, at least for me, pregnancy makes you see your body as functional, and the wonders it does and produce. Again, my own experience, but I feel way more confident after having my baby. And I love the idea of dressing to celebrate it.

I have referred to your comment many times about women having to cover their hair due to men not being able to control themselves……it’s on them not us! Having grown up around the Amish and Mennonite communities, most women dress very modestly but then again so do the men. While in college, most of my Mennonite friends explored dressing less conservatively and adapted their views on fashion to their evolving social views. I think we all enjoyed the cute party dresses that were more for ourselves then for anyone else, but now that we are in the mom stage with busy lives, fashion takes a turn = comfort and ease. I rather women dress for themselves as they feel comfortable as opposed to men dictating how women should dress to appease a religious or secular definition of what is feminine or not. Just my take. Hi! I have been through very different perspectives too during my Jewish journey. I absolutely find sexist to put high standards on women or to complain about how women (ALWAYS ONLY WOMEN) dress.. But context is everything sometimes. I generally dress in a quite traditionally modest way because I feel more confident in it, I feel people are putting more attention in other things than my butt or other parts of my body.. If I want to go to a club I'd surely go with very different clothes.. I am the same person, I just want the freedom to choose how and where I want to look sensual or not. Judaism was never about repressing sexuality, or your freedom: many chassidic masters danced and had a great relationship with the physical world represented by our body moving. I find value in Jewish modesty and I love dressing like that for synagogue, as a cantor I feel it is a way to make the service special also, but I am not going to approve anything that would force women to repress their creativity or anything that would treat women as a sexual object for men forcing them to wear certain clothes so someone else does not feel "tempted".

I dress modestly for soul and family gatherings. I go to a Reform Shul that I grew up going to. Clothing id becoming more of an issue with the teenagers who are pulled before services due to them wearing inappropriate clothing to services. When I am out with my friends I do wear shorts and jeans. I make the choice of what I wear. I love my jeans and a shirt. I do wear leggings at home since that is what's comfortable.

I really appreciate it what you said about breastfeeding in public. I believe that should be a mother's personal choice, something that's right for her and her baby. I don't think there's any adult on Earth who would like to be given a meal and then have a blanket tossed over top of them and be expected to eat it! I have four boys and I was not able to breastfeed past 3 weeks. Psychologically, once I realized that the baby is a person with a personality I simply can't breastfeed anymore which I would imagine is a psychological failing of mine. But before I knew this I did go back and forth about when and where to feed him, what to do, etc. Thank you so much for sharing your journey. I love your channel!

I am Christian and dress pretty modestly. I am similar to you in that I feel each woman should dress modestly as it seems right to her. I am by far the most modest in my family and friends circle, and I get lots of questions from people too. I have no problem with others who dress less modestly than I do. What a great video! It's so interesting to hear the spiritual journey of others, and it really shows there's not just one way to practice. I'm not religious myself (I just have strong animist tendencies), but I've always felt drawn to judaism for some reason. I am Catholic, but my take on modesty is very much the same as yours. Modesty is between the person and God. It's a way to respect God and respect yourself as you're made by God. If a boy or man gets "distracted," that's on them! I always wear dresses to Mass. But that's a comfort thing. It's more comfortable for me to sing in a dress, if it's a singing day (then that just carried over to the non-singing days too, lol). I have a lot of "tank" dresses, but all have big straps and good top coverage. I pick outfits based on two needs --- my desire to dress modestly and knowledge that my body gets warm easily. also I love learning about the connections between Judaism and my own faith, it increases my understanding of my own faith 😊

I still think about dress code rules (and others).I never had issues with dress codes, especially since my mom had her own set of rules. But I remember kids getting sent to the office because they had a tiny hole in their pants so someone would duck tape it. And if your top didn’t match the code they had a bucket to dig through to find another shirt. Girls constantly tugging on their shorts so they reached their fingertips. It all makes me laugh! 😂 Every time I watch something based particularly in High School I always think “where is the principal? Where are the dress code police?”

I’m a lot older than you and I wholeheartedly agree with your view on nursing. When I was nursing people expected you to do it in a restroom if you were out. No way was i nursing in some nasty toilet. I agree, get over it. There is nothing wrong weird or whatever about nursing. It’s a normal thing . I feel giving a kid a bottle is weird but I understand some women cannot nurse. Very nice video. Sorry about the rant. I had my daughter during a time when nursing was not really promoted. Glad to see things have changed. My mom and mother in law didn’t understand why I felt so strongly about nursing.

I'm a Christian, and I also believe that everyone has their own convictions .. if someone feels that something is right for them then who am I to Judge. I try always to keep in mind that, for myself, I need to make my own choices and decisions, and that aligns and weighs heavily on my beliefs. I might not necessarily agree with someones choices, but it is their right to make them. God gave us all a free will.

Hello Marion, thank you for this. Very honest. I am a Messianic gentile and in these circles there are a variety of views about headcovering and modesty, some super strict! I've been through it all and now at 54 am honouring my body which has never given life, but doing so to honour HaShem and not to provoke unwanted attention. .I think you dress nicely and always look lovely. I was in USY with you and had no awareness that it was cool to wear skirts or wear a kippah! I wore skirts for Shabbat but not anything else. I am pretty sure I wore spaghetti straps at both camp alonim and camp ramah (both conservative). The only time we had rules for dress was on Shabbat. As an adult I don’t care about modesty except for when I’m working or at temple.

I'm Christian but my church have no requirements for modesty. I personally don't follow any modesty guidelines but can we talk about how impractical it is to wear very short skirts or low cut necklines. You move a little bit and everything is spilling out. It is way easier to be in the world when the clothes are made to accommodate moving and not just looking good :-)

I don’t recall you ever looking immodest. 🤔But some people think you’re immodest unless you are covered from head to toe! I started dressing skimpy in college. Now I dress very modest. The skimpy clothes were always so uncomfortable and I was just trying to get attention. 😩 I feel a lot more confident when I dress feminine and modest. But that’s me.

I went to public school, and our rules were the same. No bare midriffs, skirts and shorts had to be at least finger tip length, and straps had to be at least 3 fingers' wide, or you had to have something over it. I've always been a tomboy with comfort as my top priority. And growing up my dad would simultaneously make (unnecessary) comments about my body and weight, while complaining that I needed to "dress like a girl" in other words, skimpy, tight, and provocatively. Made zero sense, and just made me self-conscious.

I really appreciate that you discussed this primarily from a woman’s perspective. Too often modesty is discussed as something women do for men and honestly that is sexist and pushes me away from modesty. Dressing to honor your body is a better way to teach modesty without shaming girls.

Not being Jewish, I was under the impression that all Jewish people covered neck to knee and the elbow and women covered their hair. If you didn't dress this way, you were a non practicing Jew. Thanks for educating us! I would love to here more about the Isreali people and your time there. I never would have thought going there would push you away from it. I would have thought they would be the most conservative.

First of, I want to emphasize that I am not judging you or anyone else. But I have an honest question: if modesty is defined according to person, if it is an individual choice so to say, can we speak of modesty at all? I mean you do you and I don't believe that how you choose to dress is a sign of the degree of your "Jewishness". But having said that, I still do believe that modesty has to have some definition and boundaries. Otherwise, short shorts can be seen as being modest depending on how you define modesty. Please consider this as a question coming from someone who is struggiling with this issue and is trying to find her way. Thank you.
