Very sustainable by not catching fish ; ) Im suprised its that much pressure in a secluded area like that.. The locals must fish a lot.

Enjoy Maui..!! Such a beautiful island with many differed coastal views..The northeast side has huge cliffs and the south side past Hana has black sand beaches. Of course go up to Haleakala to see the sunrise or sunset. FISH ON..!!

Aloha Taku and Jocelyn ( I hope that's spelled correctly), as a 48 year resident of Hawai'i, I appreciated the respect you showed for the local aquatic resources and understanding of how limited they are. From watching all of your videos it was obvious that you have a healthy respect for the ocean when you're picking Opihi (limpets) and you followed the #1 rule: never turn your back to the ocean. I grew up here learning to fish and free-dive from the time I was a keiki (child) and I wanted to pass along a few pointers/tips to you about your setup. Your chances to catch Papio, especially Omilu, are better there on Maui than here on O'ahu; being the most populated island makes it the most overfished one as well. The aqua-colored soft plastic strip lure you used works well for many species here, but are used especially for catching juvenile and adult big-eye scad (Halalu and Akule respectively), though you need to put some "action" on the bait as you retrieve it. If the aqua isn't working for you try using an opalescent white color, clear with sparkles, and there's an greenish-yellow that looks like it's the surface is an oil slick (called "motor oil" sometimes). This link is to an image of "scroungers" (soft plastic lures with a tail aka "grubs") that you can find at fishing stores here and they work well (not only these specifically): www.campanialures.com/collections/grubs. Also, in the video, your retrieving looks like you're reeling it in when it's close to the surface and not letting it sink (though those kinds of "floaters" can't get that deep with air in them). Lead sinkers are the most popular types, but you may be concerned with the impact to the environment (especially our reefs) if you should lose it. Lead or plastic is both damaging and so I can't advise you which would be better, but using lead will allow your line to drop down faster and stay at the target depth better. Papios swim in small packs close to the bottom, they aren't always near to the surface, as they prefer to ambush their prey at their depth or slightly below. You may have better luck using slices of ika, shrimp, or aku/ahi (tuna) belly dangling from a floater, as well as using white bread (balled up around the hook). The best bread to use is "Loves Bakery", it stays on the hook the longest. If you need supplies while on O'ahu you could go to walmart or a Longs drugstore, but the specialty stores I've frequented most are Brian's Fishing Supply in Honolulu, Hobbietat in Kaimuki, McCully Bicycle and Sporting Goods on South King Street, and Nanko's in Kaneohe. They could give you advice and tips, as well as sell gear from a selection more specific to these waters than found at walmart, if you should need it. Good luck and Happy fishing! I can't wait to see what other ono grindz you cook up!

Mahalo for thinking of our Locals as well as showing ur respect for our Land🤙 My family are from Hana Maui , we own land there, also if u visited Kahanu Gardens that's part of what my family owns. We really appreciate ur thought for reserving and not being greedy of what our land and Ocean provides. I am a new subscriber to ur channel and I am from Waimanalo Oahu but the beauty of the Islands brings people from all over the World and I thank you for showing everyone how to respect the places u visit. Mahalo for everything, I look forward to all ur videos u provide because seafood is my favorite.
