Well, he's not a scientist either. There are hundreds of thusands of *specialist species* that are fucked since they don't handle environmental changes well, but not humans. Humans are extremely adaptive, like rats and cockroaches. Climate Change won't kill us. Sure, hundreds of millions of humans, maybe even billions could die due to mass starvation, lack of water, mass migrations, and more extreme weather conditions, but as a species, we will survive easily.

If those 96 were paid by the US government to say it while the other 4 graduated at the top of their class and had no ties with the US government and had no funding from them or some slanted left wing organization, then yes. Lets look at it this way,; you're putting your money on a bike race. The #1 biker is the last three year winner of Absa Cape Epic Cycling Competition , the other racer is a 12 year old kid from Iowa that races other kids around the block. You put the kid on a Cannondale Supersix EVO Carbon Ultegra Di2 2019 Road Bike . The top racer, well you put him on a common 3 year old kids tricycle. Which one is gonna win ? If you say the racer on the tricycle, I give up. Check yourself into the recycling center, there's no help at this point !

Gus Sandborg, RE: the climate has change before. It is true that the climate has changed before. We understand fairly well the mechanisms through which changes have occurred on the regional and global scales. Over the long-term (thousands of years) the earth's climate is controlled by orbital cycles which control the amount and seasonality of insolation received at the earth's surface (particularly at high latitudes). On shorter timescales solar variability and volcanism play a role - these combined factors and their resultant impacts on the oceans have lead to periodic warming events such as the Medieval Warm Period and the Little Ice Age. However, these natural factors are not the main causes of recent warming. We can be assured of this for two reasons - one, solar output has been declining since the ~1960s overall and two, volcanism has occurred often enough that it should have a substantial cooling impact on the earth's climate. In contrast, we have a radiatively active greenhouse gas (CO2) which has been added to the atmosphere in ever increasing amounts. Satellite measurements can detect less heat escaping to space (e.g. an increasing greenhouse effect) and ground based measurements detect more longwave radiation hitting the surface of the earth. Beyond this today the satellite measurements are precise enough that we can actually evaluate which wavelengths are allowing heat to escape into space - overall there has been a substantial decrease in the amount of heat escaping to space at the wavelengths where CO2 is important. That climate has changed before does not mean that climate change today cannot be anthropogenically driven - in fact it exemplifies how sensitive the climate can be. If I can make a suggestion that may help you better understand climate change, I suggest that you read an introductory level and then a graduate level physical geography textbook - it may help you with understanding the key role that Greenhouse Gases have played throughout the Earth's history.

It's the RATE of climate change is what is alarming. There have always been cycles of climate warming/cooling, but humans are increasing the RATE in which it's happening and THAT is what's scary. So don't call climate change BS when it's staring you in the face. Denial ain't gonna make it go away.

GoodNaturedMischief , you do know that the rate is not a concern. Bill Nye talked about this and basically the time line that shows this supposed *excelorated rate* was way too short for a accurate calculation. even if the rate is excelorated we have no clue what level humans are to blame. the earth has gone from ice age to desert many many times without humanity.

In the 1985, the religious right said not to worry about nuclear armageddon or running out of fossil fuels, since the former would only bring on the 2nd coming, and that would happen before the latter did. In 2015 they act as if it already happened, and that what becomes of Earth, or our place on it, doesn't matter enough to arouse the slightest curiosity. If that's not a symptom of insanity, then what is?

Yes, everyone agrees that there is climate change. The climate has always changed. The disagreement is about whether or not it's possible to do much about it, and if climate scientists know enough that in trying too halt climate change they won't do more harm than good. I mean, how often have scientists looked at the results of what they've done and said, "Oops!". For examples, galore, just look at the pharmaceutical industry. The climate may not be as complicated as is the human body, but it is pretty complex. And an "oops" there will have adverse effects on all of us, not just on those who took some particular medication.

The vast majority of scientists in the world don't give a rats ass about your weird liberals or conservatives or religious extremists or your fricking economy. I find this a lot with conspiracy theorists and science deniers like you. Everything is about them and their little region. Something happens in Russia, or China, or Japan, or France - it's all about their own countries government or whatever extreme religious denomination that they are a member of.

You don't hold any degree in science but scientists around the world are studying the climate and what effects it has on the planet, but YOU.....with NO DEGREE IN SCIENCE know better? What studying did you do? You look out your window once a day and make a conclusions from what you see? If it's political, you are making it political and are willing to gamble what shape the planet could be in once you are dead. Who cares about your kids, grand kids or great grand kids. a simple approach to a complicated issue. the IPCC reports have consistently shown that change is happening and it's inevitable. It also seems to show that the impact of human activity (negative though a lot of it may be) is not as great as some people think. Also, while zero carbon footprint is a laudable idea, the US is guilty of so much less than other countries (e.g., Asia, China, Russia, etc.) at polluting, and are so far ahead of the curve on remedying both the causes and results of industrial pollution that we are an exemplar for the rest of the world. Now, if they'd just pay attention and follow our already existing examples of ecological responsibility.

@@leonsam12 Do research. Here is an excerpt from a 2017 article in the NYT-the US is nowhere near achieving these goals. "According to research released last week at a United Nations climate meeting in Germany, China and India should easily exceed the targets they set for themselves in the 2015 Paris Agreement signed by more than 190 countries. China’s emissions of carbon dioxide appear to have peaked more than 10 years sooner than its government had said they would. And India is now expected to obtain 40 percent of its electricity from non-fossil fuel sources by 2022, eight years ahead of schedule."

Well Lewis, as a scientist who does know what they are talking about, Greenland’s condition is critical - caused through global warming and the complexities associated with that phrase/subject - it all relates to black body sea mass (there’s a joke in there somewhere for you). The situation is not a lineal deterioration of the environment, it is exponential. When it comes it will come quickly. From scientific research the danger to human beings will emanate from air pollution and shortage of water. Which sounds strange to most people as the sea level will rise therefore it appears to be a contradiction. Do not expect governments to inform you of the truth. They know the truth but refrain from informing people of the situation for whatever reason. The USA is supposed to be zero-carbon by the year 2030. By that time it will be too late as it will be impossible to reverse the situation to pull out of the nose-dive to regain environmental equilibrium. Make as much fun as you like. You cannot fuck with nature and I assure you that nature will have the last laugh.

it is a very frightening and grim future for us if we don't do anything to reign in the CO2 emissions. I am afraid for my children. Reading these comments make me more afraid because people argue the facts and elect people who allow corporations (the fossil fuel and coal industry in particular) to stay in business. The changes we are seeing in the recent years - especially this year - with floods and fires, record breaking heat... caused by climate change is very, very, scary.

I too, am a scientist. The models predicting the dire consequences are computational. And these computer models are always overestimating from reality, probably programmed with false assumptions. There has been no increase in global temperature since 1998. From 1978 to 1998 it rose 0.4C. There was another increase in the early 1900s. Since we've been keeping track, the average global temperature has risen 0.9C. And it doesn't follow CO2 levels. This guy is correct. You're not going to be informed of the truth by the government. Instead, you're going to hear doom-and-gloom scenarios, as you have been hearing since the first Earth Day, about how we only have X amount of time before the disaster hits. Yet none of these predictions came true. But that doesn't stop them from crying, "The sky is falling! The sky is falling!"

A famous American sport coach, from Green Bay, as I recall, had a saying that went something like "short term pain for long term gain". AKA - wait for it - "Investment". Meanwhile, today, we see the economic and business stars and leaders push the opposite. It takes amazing skill and talent to bankrupt a casino. Especially when, by law, the odds are in favour of the house. That 2% is seemingly small, but then who built and still runs Las Vegas?

It isn't just about the money. It's about the ego. You got idiots who think God gave them the Earth and we can do with it whatever we want and God will fix it (ie GOD won't let climate change happen). Then you got the people who think they don't have to be held responsible for their actions. "What? You mean MY industry, the one that made me rich is in the wrong? No! You're wrong! How dare you imply we did something bad!"

Looks like we all agree Lewis Black speaks the truth, Yet here we are still driving huge SUVs, Diesel Trucks, and Hybrids that still use fossil fuel. And laughing about it! im as bad as anyone time to vote the idiots that keep giving the oil companies huge tax breaks once and for all out of office!

TONS of people were not aware that Keystone XL pipeline was just a way to ship Canadian oil down to our gulf coast refineries because it was cheaper than sending them to their own Candian west coast refineries. So it would have been Canadian oil - which as he says here and is totally true, is the worst kind of oil there is - traveling along a pipeline through our country and it was going to be crossing all kinds of very important bodies of fresh water that we rely on for drinking and irrigation, all with a history that clearly shows they are not able to responsibly manage such a project without spillage taking place and all to make some Canadians just a bit more rich than they already are by shaving a couple bucks off their costs by piping that oil south instead of west. No fucking thank you. We would all be screwed in a major incident while they would have very little liability as usual. Even if it bankrupted them we would still be left holding the bag with their oil all in our precious fresh water while executives would have floated away on golden parachutes. All the jobs for the pipeline were temporary, just like every other job in a trade where you just move from project to project. 100% not worth it.

Your right Lewis, the Canadian government is no better! But polluting two countries instead of the entire Atlantic Ocean is a better trade off in my opinion. Freighters pollute the Ocean every day no matter what they are carrying. It's disgusting!

There are negacionists that are just plain stupids, others just mentally ill. But there are people denying human induced climate change or planting doubts only because they think they are going to make economic profit of it. These people deserve new Nuremberg trials.

***** The drought in California is due to the cold-Phase of the Pacific Ocean (Negative-Phase PDO). Precipitation along the west coast will start to increase once the cold-PDO ends, and we enter a prolonged phase of the Warm-PDO. The drought has nothing to do with Global Temperature.

Daniel Valenzuela Climate observations from RSS, UAH, and NCEP all show no up-ward warming trend in global climate for nearly two decades. There has been slight cooling during the Cold-Phase of the PDO, which began about 10 years ago.

Why are comments not disabled for this video? When it comes to this topic, EVERYONE'S an expert, yet NO ONE has educated themselves. AT ALL! They merely read until they get to a part which they either agreed or disagreed with, then immediately stop reading and begin to formulate their response. 15 people JUST stopped reading and are now typing out their response to this comment. They are ALWAYS correct, and EVERYONE else who does not agree is an asshole or a "fucking idiot". You can see it for yourself. Simply scroll down. It is literally a sign of insanity to even try to discuss this due to the scathing reality that our very education system is so horrendously flawed that we are completely unable to educate anyone about a massive fossil record which pre-dates and over-rules ALL assumptions made regarding Earth's climate. BILLIONS of years worth of a record but let's ignore that and only focus on opinion. THAT is exactly what this entire comment section is filled with... Opinions. Opinions which in large part, are not based upon fact. They are mostly based upon assumption. Assumption without considering the entire picture. I have found only ONE comment under this video which has an entire fossil record supporting it. The comment does not contain opinion or judgment, only fact. That, is actually sad. There should be hundreds if not thousands of factual responses here. But we do rank only 17th in education compared to other major nations. So my dreams of more than one factual comment may not be realized any time soon.
