Always Board Never Boring continues his HeroQuest restoration project by painting the zombies from his 1990 copy of the classic dungeon crawler from Games Workshop and MB Games. This is a very simple paint scheme, designed to get the models finished really quickly, to a reasonable standard.

This series is so cathartic to me, I had hero quest as a boy and never got to play it as my parents never had the time to help me with the rules. Years later, when I moved away from home, the loft was cleared and I threw a pristine hero quest into the skip as I just didn’t think I’d use it ever again, stupidly unaware of how sought after the game is nowadays. It kills me every time I think about it. This series has inspired me, I need to pick myself up a copy on eBay and do what you are doing now with the restoration, and learn the rules to play with my son. I have some serious wrongs to right. Thanks for the videos, they are great!

Glad you're enjoying the series, and thank you for the kind words. I sold a near mint copy of HeroQuest many years ago, and I expect a lot of other people did similar things, so you aren't alone! It's a great game for parents to play with their children. I am sure you will have a lot of fun with it.

Nice work! At the time of writing this I have the entire base game of Blackstone Fortress painted. Also finished the No Respite expansion and now am working on the Chaos Cultist from Escalation. That would leave me with 12 more models from the other expansions left to go. Almost there.

Thanks. I hate doing eyes, but just dotting in a little white really does make the difference on these.

Yeah, I've painted my share of "mysterious strangers" with their eyes cast in shadows. Sometimes it's better just to leave it alone.

Slightly off topic but do you know if there are any modern day rpg/DnD light board games like Heroquest? Something that wouldn't be out of the question for a family to play together at Christmas? I've watched some play throughs of things like Gloomhaven but that just looks far too complicated. Just something where you can chuck some dice, move around and fight some monsters.

Considering the games I've played, I think the D&D Adventure Games are probably your best option (Castle Ravenloft, Wrath of Ashardalon, etc.). They are completely co-op, so the family can all play together, and they are relatively straightforward. Dungeon Saga is another good option. It takes a lot of inspiration from HeroQuest but is a little more complicated and requires a DM. Silver Tower and Shadows Over Hammerhal would be good options but they are both long out of print and getting quite expensive. If you want a super-light family game, consider Hasbro's Dungeon! which I reviewed on the channel. It sort of distills D&D down to the basics of running into rooms, killing monsters, and taking all their stuff. I wouldn't call it a good game, but it's a bit of silly fun for the family. Obviously the new edition of HeroQuest comes out next year, so that will also be one to watch for later on. Hope that helps.

@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Thanks for the reply. Yes I have the new Heroquest on order but I was just wondering if there was anything else that can fill the void and save us from the usual Monopoly/Cluedo Boxing Day shenanigans. I think simpler the better, so I will give Dungeon! a look. I'm sure stuff like GLoomhaven is great but if it's too complicated 90% of people won't be bothered to play it.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring

@@superspecky4eyes Gloomhaven looks to have some component bloat (lots of tokens), plus card combat which is very involved and doesn't involve dice at all. Definitely not what you're looking for. Check out Dungeon!, but again, I would also recommend looking into something like the Castle Ravenloft board game, which has lots of nice plastic toys in the box too.

Yes and no. It's an ongoing project that I'm still working on and will be featuring on the channel, as I mentioned in my recent "on the hobby table" video. Then I will be moving on to Advanced HeroQuest and Space Crusade. However, thanks to Christmas holidays and lockdown I've had two children in the house for a month, one of which I'm supposed to be homeschooling; and running the channel isn't my actual job, so at the moment I'm doing what I can when I can. Painting videos obviously take a long time and are more difficult to do in the current situation. So, there's definitely lots more still to come, but only as I'm able to do it. I'm hoping to get some more HeroQuest on the channel next week, though.

Advanced HeroQuest is my next project. I really want to get through HeroQuest before moving on to the next thing, but he request is duly noted. I'll look at painting the men-at-arms first.
