What about using detergent pods? Without fabric softener. I learned years ago not to use fabric softeners, esp on my bath towels or breathable clothing - sales lady in a linen shop told me it clogs up fabrics.

Here’s some extra game changing tips from me as well. Kirkland free and clear detergent has been outperforming any other big box brand for me. Also, do an extra rinse cycle in your wash. You’ll be surprised as to how much detergent was left behind with a single rinse. That extra rinse alone brought back a more softer and absorbing towel. If your towels are super dirty for a pre treatment a bit of dawn dish soap hand washing does the trick for me quick and easy. Just rinse it thoroughly before throwing it in the washer because it still needs a traditional wash. Edit: I know Pan said use an extra rinse setting but that’s not what I meant. In my case, I let the wash and rinse cycle complete and then I will turn the machine back on in the rinse setting.

Good tips. Also found dawn or an APC as a presoak, hand agitation, rinsing and then washing cleans the towels better with very dirty towels. People will argue it’s just staining but I disagree. Its grime the detergent alone couldn’t remove. Also, white vinegar has cleaning power and also flushes out detergent residue during the rinse cycle.

@@DerPic 100% agree. Those “stains” can almost always be lightened up significantly if not removed with proper treatment due to the nature of the material. My wife uses white vinegar on some laundry loads as well. I’ll give it a shot next time with the towels!

Great tutorial Pan. I never stop learning from you. I tend to buy more microfiber towels so i am always putting brand new towels on the paint. The used ones get downgraded to wheels, interiors, engine bays, etc. Ultimately become shop towels for oil or other nasty needs before making it into dumpster. Blessings from USA 🇺🇸

I believe pan mentioned not to use new microfiber towels before an initial wash. I noticed the difference in no small lint particles.

I've heard it recommended now to place all microfiber products in special filter bags (ex. Eco Wash, Guppyfriend) before placing them in a washing machine. The special bags catch the small amount of micro-plastics that shed off the towels so that the plastics don't pollute the water system. Other than that, this is a great basics video on microfiber maintenance!

Pan thank you for going over this important side of detailing. I do need to order the smaller rags to riches just for the measuring aspect of the bottle. TRC is adding to not heat over 104 degrees Fahrenheit on the packaging they ship microfibers in. On a side note drying clothes on line dry or air setting takes longer but the clothes come out softer than using heat without a drying sheet. Pan, great video as always! I’ve been following these instructions since you put out your first videos, with the addition the Rags To Riches detergent in the last couple of years. I have 3 problems that persist though. The first issue is with window cleaning cloths. I’ve used both the Rag Company’s waffle weave towels and premium glass cleaning towels. After 2-3 proper wash/dry cycles they start to leave tiny microfibers behind on the glass. I read this could be due to the microfibers already breaking down. I guess that makes since, but I figured they would last longer than just a few washes. Another issue is towels I’ve used for applying and buffing off my spray sealants leave actual lint behind on my car’s paint. I’ve used both Chemica Guys Professional Grade towel and the Meguiar’s Supreme shine towel. Always pre-washed them and then washed them separately from other MF towels. Even ran an extra dryer cycle on them to gather more lint before using them. The third issue is towels used for more general tasks seem to trap small pieces of dirt that won’t wash out. Often have to pick them out with tweezers. Any suggestions for these problems would be great!

Couple of things. First, most water heaters do not exceed 120F due to regulations. Second, Dawn soap, yup, dawn soap. It's a soft degreaser that will get everything off your micro fiber towels. It simply works the best and is the cheapest.

Great video! We have the same type of washer, but ours has the drying feature, so it's the washer dryer combo. For a medium load, we put 32oz of degreaser with just wash and extra 2x rinse. Then wash, 2x rinse and dry the next cycle with just water. Amazing results. There are no window issues at all. With the Shine Pro 2 in 1, we just wash, no dry. Thanks again!!

Nice to have an updated tutorial. I've been using the Tide Free & Clear since watching the last one, but I've been wondering if Rags to Riches was really any better. Before the Tide, I didn't know any better and was using the Chemical Guys stuff. It was OK, I guess. Nothing special though. Always seemed to need more product than the directions stated. Once I finish this bottle of Tide, I'm going to try the Rags to Riches. Side note, I just watched the best of 2023 video. Glad to see the Invisible Glass stripper and Ceramic Glass coating mentioned. When I first asked you about them ages ago, you hadn't heard about either one yet. In my mind, I'm taking credit for that one. 😂

I have some of those extra fluffy towels, I don't known how the weave method is called, I think is like the orange towel you have there and when they first came new I was amazed how soft they arey, but after the first wash they lost their extra softness. Even after the previous two videos still I enjoyed this one! I used to add white vinegar as a fabric softener like I do with my clothes but with Nanolex microfiber detergent I don’t need to, just 40C and hang dry…Best tip is to throw it in the dryer for a good fluff up and to remove any particles or dust 😃

It depends a lot on your country, here in Belgium I use the normal version of Omo. But I guess any "normal" or basic version of your favorite brand should do the trick.

If your dryer doesn't have the special "air dry" function, that's why I mention to use the lowest heat setting instead. As not all dryers (especially older models) have that "air dry" function. If your dryer has it, use it.

How well timed. I've just bought a gallon last week. I usually apply a spot of dishsoap on a particular dirty area on each cloth and leave it in a tub of water with an oz of rags to riches for a number of hours. I think I'll try 24 hours with a bit more rags to riches. I try to keep costs down using less chemical in the soaking process beforehand as finding the balance of cost and the amount of product is where I'm at.

I have the exact washer and dryer. Ive had excellent success washing on speed wash ( warm, extra dirty) and drying on speed dry ( warm and time varies..up to 1:30 hours for drying towels, @30 minutes for all others).

I'm glad I watched a video before I washed mine for the first time. I didn't know you can't use fabric softener. I would have tossed it right in. Apparently it makes the cloth stiff.

You can soak your towels adding a degreaser concentrate from any brand instead of that special detergent. And I agree about the vinegar.

Yes because you need to select longer drying times. I typically set 90 minutes, and then if they're still damp, run a new cycle.

You might think they work well, when in reality they are most likely good for trash. Washing in warm water doesn’t matter. It’s drying in hot cycles that kills the fibers. Any producer of microfiber towels will tell you that. Including the guys at The Rag Company, well respected in the industry. But do as you please. 👍🏻

@@PanTheOrganizer I was cleaning severe areas and decided to Nuke the towels with hot water and dryer instead of new towels each use. I put in 1/2 cup of 5% vinegar and 1/2 cup of borax and also some Tide Free and Clear. The towels go from smelling terrible and looking gross to looking and smelling clean.

Yes but Rags to Riches didn't exist back then, and a few tweaks to the steps as time evolves and we learn new things. Also, I add 120,000 to 200,000 new subscribers every year, so many new people to the channel aren't aware I have all those tutorials, so it's good knowledge for them to have.

thanks Pan... have used many mf detergents , but P&S is the only one that really works both for cleaning and restoring. The only issue us weekend warriors have, for me anyway, is separation of towels. you need to purchase quite a lot of towels in order to follow this process, otherwise you would be loading a few towels at a time in a washing machine to keep everything separate. I have to basically do 3 cars before I have enough to do my washing. Any towel used with any protectant always remains separate, as any cleaning towel is another batch, and any drying another. Real dirty ones (dont tend to get many as if you are using right products and process this limits heavy dirt) these get pre-soaked and they are done and a later time when i have enough to put them in a wash.

Pan, what's your recommendation for DIYers who don't amass as many dirty towels and probably don't have as many as someone with a detailing business to begin with? For example: I have 4-6 dedicated glass towels and I only use 1-3 at most per-wash/dry. Since it is not economical, I have always washed these right alongside my other microfiber towels (primarily used only for drying, occasionally they might have a some Bead Maker for a quick drying aid/topper) with the only separation being the dirtiest/most grimy towels from wheels or other areas where dirt or harsher chemicals were picked up.

I would keep the towels used for compounds/polishes seperate from all the others for sure as they contain abrasives, and the super disgusting greasy ones (engine bays,etc) separate. For the rest, it's not the end of the world if you wash the microfiber towels together.

I have never attempted to hand wash my towels. I'm not sure that would be very effective to remove detailing chemicals.

Most will throw them 😓 You mentioned in previous videos we need to throw the ones we used for ceramic coating to the trash. Is that still the case? Especially when we see that the new Cerakote coating is not drying on the fabric.

Thanks! For any true coating, those in small glass bottles, I never take a chance and I always throw the towels and applicators after I am done with the application of the coating. Hardening or not on the towel has nothing to do with this. There can be coatings that don't harden the surface, but still will coat the fibers and be hard to remove under washing. I don't take risks. If you're doing an expensive coating job, it's not a few towels for a few bucks that will matter in the bottom line. If you reuse the towels you used to apply coatings, you always run the risk of scratching the future surface. I take my towel and soak them in Dawn dish soap for about 1 hr and then after washing again with clean water and soaking in warm clean water then squeezing out access water and air dry. The Dawn soap gets rid of all dirt and any kind of protection on the towels.

I would like to see a video explaining how to assess used towel condition and what they are still good/no longer good for as a professional. I have a large collection of them I use, and probably need to sort them. How would I go about that process? Basically what I am asking is how many grades should there be, and at what point is the towel destined for the trash bin? The plainly obvious ones I can deal with, but it is the cutoff point I am looking for.

It wouldn't be an easy thing to explain, but in general, microfiber experts say there should be some "grabby" of "clingy" effect to towels when you run your fingers over them. Also some level of static cling. As the goal of microfibers if picking up dirt with those little finger style fibers. If they feel too soft, and not grabby anymore, or don't absorb liquids as they once did, most likely you have a towel that should be thrown away, or used for less important tasks. You can try rejuvenating old towels first, to see if it's just something coating the fibers, making them less absorbant, or if they are past their lifespan.
