Venom 415 Oh god, I miss Time Splitters. Future Perfect was so good. I had fond memories with the Resident Evil games on Gamecube, with Resi 4 still being one of my all-time favorites. After watching Yahtzee's Lets Drown Out of it, I decided to replay it and it surpringly holds up in a lot of ways still. Even Gabe and Yahtzee are having fun replaying it.

Nintendo absolutely does have Mario under character lockdown. All of the characters, in fact. They have a policy of zero character manipulation (anything to modify an existing character to make them unique in any way,) and do the absolute bare minimum to not be stale, which has failed more than a few times. It's a shame because the uniqueness is exactly what makes TTYD so good. People play the Mario RPGs to have a new experience with Mario outside of the status quo, which is exactly what Sticker Star returned to, and Color Splash and Origami King do the bare minimum to move away from again. Even since Super Paper Mario, every character that is not Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser or other mainline character is a stale generic Toad or something completely unrelated to anything from any other Mario game, like Super Paper Mario's geometric shape NPCs or the mouse-pointer support characters in the last four games. All we want is another Thousand Year Door, Nintendo, you just had to go and mess with perfection...

I love Nintendo. They regularly release games that seem all happy, but then you dig a liiittle deeper and realize how fucking dark everything is. Sometimes the happy shell is so thin that it shatters halfway through the game. Everyone talks about Pokemon and its many dead children, but that's not even scratching the surface of Mystery Dungeon.

Most of the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series is pretty dark, even Gates to Infinity. While explorers is a pretty good game, you have to admit that Super's mechanics is vastly improved. Despite this, all PMD games are still good (minus the Wiiware one)

This game has perhaps my favourite character in this series: Vivian the Shadow Siren. Not only does she join you in the game's most surprising chapter (Twilight Town), but she's the series' most nuanced character. You didn't expect her to join your party, since she's one of the mooks the bad guy always throws at you, but she turns coat when you're more decent to her, and finds a source of courage through your trust in her. She starts out a broken character, and rebuilds her confidence in the adventure. But she also fills the other function an RPG character has: she's useful, as well as well-written. Her "Fiery Jinx" move is a godsend for large groups of tough enemies, and any fighter that can burn enemies with her normal attack is fine by me. Plus, her field move, "Veil", which lets you turn invisible and pass through things, also was the catalyst for one of the game's funniest moments: hearing the crows talk when they think you're not around. It's still a riot. Blumiere and Timpani run a close second for my favourite characters, and given the RATHER bare-bones direction this series has taken lately, they're not likely to be supplanted.

I finally played this game for the first time, and man its odd. Its emblematic of a time where Nintendo gave less of a shit about being child friendly. For one, I'd assume that the whole thing with the AI spying on Peach's peaches was a joke or a subtle innuendo or something, but that actually happens. Its also really dark in places too. In the first area, you help a koopa in slaying a dragon to avenge his dead father, and there's a joke where the koopa runs up to a skeleton and starts mourning what he thinks is his dead dad, only to realize that its not actually his corpse and goes to cry over the skeleton right next to it. The game's tone is all over the place and the gameplay is pretty lame, but it is just so unique and interesting and is full of creative ideas that could never happen nowadays.

Thats only natural. It's very easy to voice whats wrong with a game. It's SO HARD to express what makes a game good. What can be amazing in one game can totally ruin another. The whole effect is what matters, not the parts. Putting that into words and comparing directly to other games is very difficult.

+HG Shurtugal God Hand was the last game developed by internal Capcom developer, Clover Studio, which created classics like Okami and Viewtiful Joe. It had an interesting combat system where the difficulty was scaled depending on how well you fought, and there was an interesting create-your-own-combo system that was different from the norm. But because of how "out there" the game was, it didn't reach predicted sales targets and Capcom closed down Clover. The staff members that made up the now-defunct Clover created a new studio shortly afterwards and still create games to this day. These days, those guys operate under the banner, "Platinum Games."

I'd say the defensive bullet hell stuff was pretty good, but the quicktime event style thing you had to do when attacking was pretty weak, I felt. I mean, it's technically not mechanically different from the stuff you do in Mario RPGs but the presentation was just kind of lacking.

Super Paper Mario was not bad but its not a Paper Mario game...its very distant from that series in the same way Mario and Luigi Paper Jam is... perhaps even more due to genre changes.

Ryan S. It depends on how you view Paper Mario, yes it does keep its story but it throws away all RPG elements besides items. Those RPG elements are still a key to the franchise. Super Paper Mario is more like Paper Mario X Super Mario Bros. [NES].

What gets me is that Nintendo is taking their Mario spin-off more and more literally with each new installment instead of just continuing what the art style originally was for and that was to be a "pop-up picture book" where paper effects were only used to compliment the assets and story to add charm to its believability that these characters were real in some way and enjoyability. That's all lost starting with Sticker Star and continues to dig a deeper hole with the upcoming Color Splash. Peak of brilliance is Thousand-Year Door.

I wanna see Yahtzee's take on the anime style, what-the-fuck story, but incredibly solid and rewarding gameplay that (for all of you non Fire Emblem fans out there) could be adequately described as medieval XCOM with specific characters instead of expendable Joes.

havoren Eh, I think very few people could argue that Fire Emblem is an overdone franchise, considering how only about half of the games in the franchise have been released in English, and some of those were pretty uncommon and/or unpopular on release (oh hi Tellius!). And Awakening vs Fates, for me Awakening is more charming and had better characters, but Fates had stronger gameplay.

it didn't tho. i mean, Battleborn was actually announced (and leaked before that) BEFORE anyone had even heard of Overwatch. It couldn't have copied Overwatch's visuals because the visuals have stayed the same since it was announced (again, before overwatch was announced).

They look very different. That said both Battleborn and Overwatch were announced only months from eachother and given Overwatch was a lot further in its development process at the time... it's impossible to say one copied the other.

Strange how "further in its development process" resulted in a later release date, later beta, etc., and the dates for Overwatch were suspiciously similar to dates for Battleborn, which were announced earlier. Besides, they're barely comparable. You'd get more out of comparing Battleborn with Smite and Overwatch with TF2. Both of them likely suffered a bit from coming out at around the same time, though.
