Ken Ham and his team have a bi-weekly "news" show, reacting to the news stories of the day from a Christian young-earth creation perspective from the Answers in Genesis staff at his Creation Museum.
Shannon Q and I join Ken Ham, Georgia Purdom and Bodie Hodge as they discuss geckos, a student disrupting class and more in this episode of Answers News hosted in front of a live audience at the Creation Museum.

@@jayb0g yeah, that is true. almost all terrorism was conducted by right wing extremists last year. People like Alec Baldwin might make dumb semantic mistakes when they say islamaphobia is "racist," but they still have a point. People like Sam Harris do consistently group moderates, which in my opinion, are the equivalent of footfall fans, in with extremists. This idea that moderates of any faith-based belief is either liberal or conservative can be disputed easily by changing the time subject belief from a minority to a minority, or vice versa, because liberals tend to look out for the minority while conservatives tend to care more for the majority.

I'd wager the number of people who went there as Christians and came out as atheists is higher than the other way around. It's like reading the bible, that's essentially what made me an atheist. I read that book and my reaction was basically "That's worse than the worst Star Trek fanfic, that god character..." I have never seen a worse Mary Sue than the god of the bible. Can do everything, does know everything, is the best and greatest, everyone else wants to be his friend, even after he makes the life of the other characters difficult and puts them in danger and requires them to clean up that Mary Sue's fuckups... and unlike the average Mary Sue he doesn't even have the courtesy to die heroically to save the others in the end.

God was his son, it's some deep Southern Banjo playing family drama. But I stand by what I had asked, and now repeat as a statement. The Bible really fell deep into all the things that a story should never do, and I know this is not the most popular opinion but I think the Bible is a second or third-rate storybook. When does Jesus start playing the Anit-Hero?

To clarify. The abortion study that Shannon cited found that *surgical* abortion increased the risk factor of preterm birth by 0.7%. In constrast, they found that *medical* (i.e. pharmaceutical) abortion didn't have any additional risk compared to the control groups. The take-home point is that medical abortion is OK, surgical abortion carries a little bit of risk.

I caught this too, and in fact the 'news' article headline contradicts the subheadline and the body text, which is why one should never trust common news media when reporting science. Still, as a scientist (paleobiology), had someone brought up abortion in either a paleontology class or a geology class, the whole class would have told that person to sit down and shut up. But then I was in university in the 60's through the 80's and no one was concerned about anyone's "feelings"--we cared about the education. (BTW, science turned me into an atheist, although I was never a strong believer in god--I just frankly didn't care much.)

@spamfilter32 6 жыл бұрын
@Shannon Q To be fair to you though, the study did say the increase was to the "risk factor" not to the event itself. Also, I would think it fair to say that an increase of 0.7% is a negligible increase. So, you were probably more right then wrong, even with the mistake. Also, I am super jealous of your guys free healthcare. It is unbelievably frustrating that the first meaningful healthcare reform this country has had since the invention of Health Insurance is being destroyed by the party that invented that same reform because a "Black Man" had the temerity to get it passed.

Not negligible on a population level, you understand that that means 7 preterm babies for every thousand born to post-sugery patients? If we expect many post-surgery gravidae, 50,000 or so, we have hundreds of babies with problems which could have been prevented by using another way to clean out mommie's womb.

D&C actually stands for dilation and curettage. They dilate the cervix and use an implement called a courette to scrape the lining of the womb. It isn't only used for cleaning out leftover debris from a miscarriage/pregnancy or an abortion, they also use it to remove other abnormalities such as endometrial polyps, cancers and endometrial hyperplasia. It is also used as a diagnostic test.

On the issue of the Valerie Flokstra discussion about abortion: I can see in her approach to abortion the same that I have come across in other christians, both in Canada and in America - the conviction that they are right to oppose abortion under any circumstances, and to quote their faith as absolute authority to say so. In other words, to close down discussion by saying they are right and you are wrong. I am a British christian currently living in Canada, and I am appalled at this approach. I would never claim to be absolutely correct on any matter of faith, and I would always be open to discuss any matter of faith with anyone - christian or atheist, or someone of another faith. And, as Shannon showed, her evidence for her point of view actually undermined it and suggested the opposite was true. She had accepted what she had been told, or what she had seen in a program or a video, as truth without checking it, and was pushing her truth onto the class as a whole and onto the two members of staff who spoke to her afterwards. I have discussed the issue of abortion with my own Baptist pastor (who holds extreme "Right to Life" views), and the question of Young Earth Creationism with a youth worker, and both of them presented their views as the only "correct" christian view, and implied that I was completely wrong to hold any other view. I tried to engage both of them on the basis of scientific evidence and (in the case of abortion) the need to do the minimum harm, but neither of them would engage in any way other than on their own interpretation of the Bible. In the case of YEC, this involved the youth worker in rejecting wholesale all the evidence available from radiometric dating techniques, without having a shred of evidence that they were untrustworthy. As a christian, I am ashamed of others who hold faith in the same Saviour as myself, who put up such ignorant and impervious shields against discussion. I am therefore not surprised to hear that Valerie ended up working in a christian school, because she wouldn't be able to cope with having anyone hold a contrary view to herself. It is such a pity, and I hope north america can find some way to resolve this, because it is turning anyone who has any scientific knowledge against the church, and marginalizing it. On a side note, I once worked for a period in Jordan, and was taken out for the day by a Jordanian colleague who was eager to show me the best of his country. He took me first to Madaba, then down the mountains beside Jordan's east bank to Petra, which was stunning. Then we drove back at the end of the day along the fringe of the desert. The problem was that my friend could speak little English, and I no Arabic. Very early in the day it was clear that he had a question for me, and we struggled to understand each other. Eventually the conversation ran like this: - You're a christian, right? - Yes, I am - How many Gods do you believe in? - One God. - Good - must be the same as mine. He wanted me to understand that he intended to stop at intervals along the road to pray, and wanted to be sure I'd be ok with that. For him, if we both believed in one God it didn't matter how we each prayed to him. It was an open and inclusive way of thinking that opened up our discussion rather than becoming a barrier between us. I wish my own church here in Canada could learn this.

Again, abortion simply was not part of the conversation. Students did not pay money (and possibly get up early) to learn more about another student's views on abortion. If this was a philosophy class and they were talking about human sexuality, I can see where abortion might come up. If this was a poli sci class and they were talking about campaign issues, I can see where abortion might come up. But, learning how to teach autistic children, is not the time to try and bring up abortion.

Also, "Freedom of Speech" does not apply to classrooms. You don't have "freedom of speech" in a classroom setting. You are there to listen to your teacher, and perhaps ask them to clarify something they said. It is *not* a forum for debate.

I am 23, and only recently found out that I am autistic. I was considered gifted in school and separated from my classmates in order to learn at a higher level than them and constantly told that I was a genius. Having teachers learn about autism and how to teach kids with autism is so important. I was lucky that I was adequately pushed to learn, but I wasn't lucky enough to have teachers that tried to foster social skills in me. Of course, since I wasn't diagnosed at the time, I don't fault them. But it is an important thing for teachers to know about, and this lady probably learned nothing from the class if she was more worried about sharing abortion statistics.

😡I have a master's-level education and I have attended x2 city colleges, a state university, and a non-religious private university. The only time that I've heard of an instructor mention creationism was when they felt that their class's topic might run contradictory to some pupils' religious beliefs (e.g. how solar systems and planets were/are formed, the age of the Earth, biological evolution). Even still, my instructors broached the creationism/religious beliefs as a way to preface the class so that students with firmly held religious beliefs (or ignorance) would not feel attacked or shamed. Instead, instructors encouraged all students to look at the (verifiable/replicable) evidence without prejudice and to come to their own conclusions. Not to say that it has never happened, but I have never seen a religious student be singled out or have their beliefs disrespected, like AIG suggests happens ad nauseam. If an instructor had discussed a student's belief(s), it was always initiated by the student and the instructor had always acted politly to the student. AIG seems to be perpetuating what Hannah and Jake have dubbed, "persecution porn."

The student in question probably felt like, "I have a captive audience to share the gospel." The problem is that a classroom wide conversation needs to be about, say the lesson. The professor has a limited amount of time, in which to transfer knowledge.

I took freshmen philosophy in college and I'm sure the professor was an atheist. The campus crusade for Christ person in the class really only got shit from other students. The professor didn't care what your viewpoint was, he only wanted you to express it with defined concepts and defend it with sound arguments. He wanted you to be able to think critically.

Noah and His Ark Problems... Even if Noah could acquire the impossible amount of wood needed to construct it, however, we run into further problems. The Ark would have been a sizable fraction of the size of an Aircraft Carrier or a Battleship, and a wooden boat that size would have been too leaky and flexible to withstand the stresses of global flood conditions. ( It Being smaller then the Titanic ) 1. ~7.77 million species of animals (of which 953,434 have been described and cataloged) 2. ~298,000 species of plants (of which 215,644 have been described and cataloged) 3. ~611,000 species of fungi (moulds, mushrooms) (of which 43,271 have been described and cataloged) 4. ~36,400 species of protozoa (single-cell organisms with animal-like behavior, eg. movement, of which 8,118 have been described and cataloged) 5. ~27,500 species of chromista (including, eg. brown algae, diatoms, water moulds, of which 13,033 have been described and cataloged) Conclusion: Noah supposedly took two pairs of each animal. That means Noah at least has to fill and feed more than 10 million animals in his ship. Don't for get all the waist management. (if we exclude animals living in sea and include insects). Neither description of ark in Bible can satisfy this demands nor any ship ever builded in human history. Story of Noah is probably written by people who thought there were at most several hundreds of species living in the world. Using The Evidence Shows The Ark Could Not Be True... It's Just a Made up Story's “No amount of Evidence will Ever Persuade an. Ignorant Person.” “If You Think You Know Everything, You’ll Never Learn Anything,”

I have to correct @ 17:10, it's a DILATION AND CURRETTAGE, not dust and clean. And the paper Rachel was looking at is referring to having the procedure done AFTER a termination. Removing the retained products of conception, NOT the termination itself.

There's no free speech for students in the classroom. For that matter, it is limited even for the professor. And I'm sure Ken also accepts limits of free speech for the visitors in his museum - he wouldn't want to have, say, some Jehova's Witnesses trying to convert people in there. (For that matter, indigenous culture parallels the crucifixion? Might that student be a Mormon?) 15:30 ... so that "bullied girl" is actually bullying the class. Reminds me of the athlete crying about trans athletes because they once lost against one of those, completely ignoring the fact that they won against them several times. Those trans athletes are so overpowered in those sports! Their side lies. Systematically. Not all of them, but certainly all the loud ones. (I hear *Christian* professors sometimes get away with those antics. Can you say "double standard"? Can't say if it's true.)

I'm now a "believer" just from hearing about this "roe boat." For years there was a "Noah's Ark" in St. Louis. It was a "replica" of Noah's Ark" located at the intersection of I 70 and Hwy 94 overlooking the Missouri River. It was notable as one of the worst restaurant until they finally razed it and built a Hotel a few years back. Like this monstrosity in Tenn, the novelty wears off after a few decades.

"I don't think... any evolution believing, history believing Christian has walked through the doors of that park and thought 'You know what, that makes sense'" *sigh* I really wish that were true. My dad might not have believed in evolution (specifically "macro evolution") but prior to listening to the drivel of AiG he would have at least agreed that the Earth wasn't 6000 years old. But after visiting the Ark Encounter he was willing to at least consider a young Earth. In every conversation we've had since about Christianity (around that same time I finally came to the conclusion that I'm an agnostic atheist) he has used every common dodge and referenced multiple apologists I've heard refuted on this and other KZbin channels. He even said that I'm "too smart for my own good" for questioning Christianity, to which I responded rather pettily "Well, that's God's fault, isn't it?" I'm extremely grateful to Paulogia and others for helping me come to terms with my own position on the matter, but I despair at ever getting my own father to understand how terrible his own position is.

Believe it or not, my freshman Biology professor absolutely did have us raise our hands and did almost to the letter what Ken Ham reported. Almost TO THE LETTER! It was really messed up. I ended up failing the class, mostly because I was immature and irresponsible at the time, but that absolutely played a role in my failure. It also played a role in my subsequent return to a Biomedical Science major in college when I would reattempt it six years later. So yes, this really DOES happen.

The thing that makes Ken Ham dangerous is that he is so much less slimy than most preachers. He's likable. Hell, I'm anti theism, and I like him. Look at preachers like Joel Osteen, Kenneth Copeland, Ted Haggard, or anyone named Hovind. Even if you're christian, you hate them, but Ham is different, even thought he's obviously wrong about everything, you still kinda look for a reason to give him a break. I gotta admit though, there's nothing likable about PhD Giggles.

I can somewhat understand why someone turns to religion but why anyone would become Christian in Hams way is just strange! And his delusion is humongous! That interrupting girl seems to not want any education, so why was she there? Freedom of speech doesn't mean that bad behavior is ok. Many sadly ignore that! AiG always talks like "the others" actually think and behave like AiG think they do! It's just so bad and uncurious!

Around the 12min mark. I would just like to input I understand the situation that the topic is in. And that I agree 100% with what Shanon said, that this woman in Canada will not face any criminal charges or lose of freedoms because of her use of free speech. I would just like to take a moment to say that, she is lucky to be in that situation. I am a China major, finishing my thesis now. And I can speech from experience that, that is not always the case, even in Canada. There are examples of ethnic Chinese students talking back at Chinese exchange students, when they interrupt the class to spread their CCP propaganda, and then their families inside of the PRC gets legal problems, or themselves when they visit their family in the PRC.

30 minutes apologizing for a dishonest christian student being offended. They should be offended. They are promoting immorality. They are an ideology of hatred. Even admitting that what she said was off-topic and false, the biggest problem was being certain that she wasn't offended. The "teachers" should have expelled her from the classroom. But, no, they were too harsh in the way they talk to her, the poor thing. What a waste of time.

I'm one of those people who are unable to stop myself from spouting random things I know as they relate to a conversation (yes, I am aware it's fucking annoying)...but even I can't follow her train of logic to how autism and abortion correlate even with it explained. (My random thought train in the conversation at hand would probably be more related to relating my experiences AS an autistic person how how education failed or succeeded with me and others I know and the difference between reaching a high functioning autistic vs a lower functioning and effective tools I found as a nanny - which are not many as autistic children weren't my specialty, ADHD ones were, abortion wasn't even near that thought process and I have heard the stat -randomly somewhere online).
