PRO TIP on the window breaker: if you ever find yourself in a situation where you need to use it, make sure you aim for the corners of the window because it's weaker than the center and will most likely break faster!

I used to Carry a small pepper spray in my bag , until I was invited to a birthday party in a club.i had to take the train and walk alone at night to get there in a very Sketchy area. Unfortunately, the security staff who checked me confiscated my spray and never gave it back to me. Had to go back home alone without my pepper spray. Women should be able to carry it at all time since it is non lethal...

a reaction from someone who has been attacked & has completed a 6 months long advanced self defense course: (please 'like' so people can see these tips, as it might help someone!) 1) it's not recommended to use knives or tasers as self defense products. you could easily kill someone with a knife and then go to prison. tasers usually need to be in direct contact with the attacker's skin for 5 seconds, which is a really long time in attacks + it's difficult if the attacker has a hoodie and pants, because no skin is exposed. therefore it's almost impossible to use it right! (if the sound won't turn them away) 2) the best self defense product is a pepper spray, but you must learn to use it. it's recommended to buy the same pepper spray twice, go to some big open space (woods, parking lot) and try to shoot it at a tree/sign/whatever. learn if there's any kind of safety pin, where and how to push it and how to aim it. when you're being attacked, there is no time to figure these things out. in fog-like pepper sprays you don't need to spray it right to the attacker's eyes. if you're worried about the wind or want something with a longer range, it's good to use a pepper spray with a stream, but you have to be able to aim it directly to the attacker's eyes. however, any of these pepper sprays cannot be used in a closed space! in cars, small rooms etc you should use a gel pepper spray (again you must be able to aim to directly to the eyes). remember to check the "expiration date" & remember, that each pepper spray can only be used once (even if you didn't use the full capacity)! 3) about those pointy keychains: the one Steph showed in her video will be better than nothing, but it might hurt your fist when you're trying to use it with full force + it will be ineffective if the attacker is wearing a jacket. it's better to use the kubotan, but it's not supposed to be used in short stabbing motions! you use it to help your punches do more damage, so instead of stabbing wherever, here's what you should do: -make a firm fist around the kubotan (as if you're trying to recreate the shower scene from Psycho) -use a long punching motion instead of a short stabbing motion, and punch with the side of the fist where your little finger is. this goes just for using your fist without a kubotan as well, because you won't damage your knuckles while inflicting the same amount of pain. -the punch should not end when you touch the attacker, instead prolong the trajectory of the punch "past" the attacker (as if you'd want to punch through him). this way your punch will be much stronger. -aim for the head, especially temples, ears, eyes and neck 4) about going to prison for self defense: your best bet is not using a knife! use it only in scenarios where you're being attacked with a knife or a similar weapon (screwdriver, scissors, maybe even a gun). i'm able to keep writing about this forever, but this comment is already too long, so feel free to ask questions if there's anything you'd like to know.

also here are some behavioral/basic self defense tips: 1) generally it's important to ALWAYS be aware of your surroundings, not looking at your phone or listen to music when you're outside. walk confidently and be aware if anyone is watching you for a little bit too long, following you, or approaching you. we as humans have an instinct, and if you feel unsure about someone "for no particular reason", try to listen to it - for example, if someone who seems off to you is about to go into an elevator with you, just wait for the next one even if it means you will look weird. 2) if anyone has already approached you (talks to you badly, tries to touch you, etc.), keep a reasonable distance from him and assume this position: stand confidently and with your legs apart (for a good balance one foot should be slightly to the front) and put hour hands infront of you (palms open - signals to other people, that you are defending). keep saying loudly and firmly "leave me alone, leave me alone". it's important to make a scene to draw attention to you, because that 1) notifies other people and they might help you, 2) signals to the perpetrator that you are not an easy victim and he'll likely give up. 3) it's important to always let your boundaries known even if nothing "serious" has happened yet, because most perpetrators test their victims first - for example by "accidentaly" touching them or staring at them for a bit too long. if you pretend you don't see it, he'll figure you won't react to anything else either and therefore you'll be an easy victim. always be firm and let them know that you're loud and can stand up for yourself. to sum it up: always be aware of your surroundings, look confident, be firm and MAKE A SCENE!

@rokenrolchild
@rokenrolchild 5 жыл бұрын
@@CherryBerryFashion you're welcome! i really recommend talking to the police about your situation (you can take a friend with you), or at least someone you trust. maybe try to take picture of the men, if that's possible, so you have something to show to the police (but only if that feels safe to do!). it must be hard to cope with, but i hope you get the help you deserve! stalking is a crime and police has to deal with it if you report it.
@rokenrolchild
@rokenrolchild 5 жыл бұрын
@@CherryBerryFashion about the punches - i'm sorry for my bad explanation, english is not my first language. what i meant by punching "behind" them is basically to make the trajectory of the punch as long as possible. other way of putting it is to punch "past" the point of contact. so if you try to punch them in the temple, try not to stop your punch at the temple, but imagine you want to punch through it. you can even try it with your hands - first try to punch your palm and stopping after you touch the palm, versus trying to punch "through" the palm. does that help? when you see someone trying to push you to the ground, try to avoid it at all costs, because fighting on the ground is much harder. best thing to do is to lower your core, spread your legs and have one foot more to the front than the other. if you see someone leaning down to grab your waist, move quickly to the side. if they manage to catch you to pull you down, you have two options: 1) put your back leg more to the back and lean a bit forward, so when they grab your waist you have a good balance. then use the pointy part of your elbow to punch them really hard to the spine repeatedly. to make your punches as strong as possible, always try to engage your full body (use your body weight). 2) again get a good balance and then grab them with your hand by the face (if you poke them hard in the eyes while doing it, even better) and pull to the other side. for example, if their head is by your left hip, use your right hand and pull their face very aggresivelly towards your right hip. this is very effective, because eyes are very sensitive + where the head goes, the rest of the body follows. usually they end up very desoriented on the floor and that gives you a few seconds head start to run to safety (restaurant, bar, shop, ...). it's very hard to explain without showing you, but i hope it helps xx

As someone who takes public transportation and walks around alone often. Here’s some advice that I’ve used and learned. I have mace that is on my keychain and l’ll just set it on my lap. Many people that given me an ill feeling instantly change there demeanor once seeing it in my lap. I’ve even held it in my hands and made eye contact with the person as well as the mace while still on public transportation. Another, big tip is I’ve noticed how much interactions change if you give eye contact. Which is giving them a sense that you’re confident and any other non-verbal ways you can show confidence do it. Also, trust your gut/intuition always. I have gotten feelings before that I shouldn’t get on a max or bus, so I don’t. I’ve even got feelings I should get off before my stop to wait for another, even when nothing has happened or someone has given any signs. Just trust your intuition. I definitely know this isn’t perfect advice or have I gone to a defense class, although these are a couple things I’ve used for the years I’ve taken public transportation/walking around a lot.

If you are suspicious of someone, look confident and like you’re not someone to be messed with. If you are being mugged, surrender the items they want. If a physical altercation seems apparent, you should make your best attempt to escape. If escape is not possible, try to avoid combat. Engaging the aggressor in combat should be a last resort. I heard it’s better to throw it past them, since they’ll be confused and turn around to see where they fell. It gives you a chance to run away while they start processing what is happening. I wondering if just throwing it in front of them is better though, cuz you don’t know if they’ll reach for it first.

In Finland the self-defence rules are like this: If someone punches you the MOST you can do is push them (so they don't get a boo boo) or run away. LIKE WTF? In one case a woman was being strangled by her husband and she got a hold of a knife and stabbed him in the side. He died and she got charged, because "ShE cOuLd HaVe StAbBeD hIm SoMeWhErE eLsE " Like if your ABOUT TO DIE you aren't gonna think: HMMMM WHERE SHOULD I STAB HIM??????

Some quick tips I use without products when I'm alone are: making assertive eye contact with people walking past, not using headphones late at night, knowing my directions in advance instead of using my phone as a gps while I walk, and wearing a cross body bag rather than an open shoulder bag. Last year my phone was stolen directly out of my hands at a train stop, and since then I've learned to always acknowledge my surroundings before getting too comfortable. Thank u for this!

Great advice. Random attackers typically are trying to prey on who they think is weak or vulnerable. Always stay alert and don't walk around with headphones in if the area you're in isn't definitely safe. Walk with confidence - know where you're going and keep your eyes up and stay alert of your surroundings. Don't get nervous and look away sheepishly if someone is starting/looking. Like you said, make eye contact with confidence. Your demeanor and how conscious you are of what is going on around you can make you seem like not a good target.

Remember: scream WHATEVER you can if you’re in danger. I heard some people scream ‘fire!’ so that people come and help. Just scream as loud as you can, especially if the attacker is trying to muffle you. And remember, attackers come in every shape and form. If you’re getting bad vibes, trust yourself. A woman is just as likely to attack you as a man, and a seemingly harmless person can prove the opposite in the blink of an eye.

Well that goes for all weapons but it's so easy to take a knife from someone who doesn't know how to use it and who is a smaller target. @@Talliwa123 Not only that, but I believe it's true that a lot of homeowners are killed with their own firearms. I suppose the intruder(s) somehow get the firearms off the owner and then subdue them with their own guns. It's a pretty unsettling statistic. I'm a straight man, but I've been attacked in public before by a guy who was completely out of it on drugs. I was extremely drunk at the time. I was sitting on a ledge talking with my friend and, out of nowhere, this guy runs up to me and sucker punches me right in the side of the head behind my ear. My glasses flew off, my phone flew out of my hand as I was knocked flat on my ass. I sprung to my feet fairly quickly despite being drunk. I was also able to locate my glasses and phone in a couple seconds. I asked the guy why he hit me and he just asked me what I was going to do about it while in a fighting stance. So I told him I was going to run and I did! Yeah, I guess I'm lucky I could outrun him because, after half a block, I lost him. I was paranoid that this guy had a weapon on him and he was clearly on drugs. I figured it wasn't worth the risk. It turns out my buddy ran into him a few minutes after the altercation at a gas station. The guy got kicked out for trying to steal Ritz crackers. My buddy ended up getting the better of him outside.

i've finished a 6 months long advanced course on self defense and might be able to help, so feel free to ask specific questions if you'd like (+ please 'like' this so people can see, it might help someone!). 1) generally it's important to ALWAYS be aware of your surroundings, not looking at your phone or listen to music when you're outside. walk confidently and be aware if anyone is watching you for a little bit too long, following you, or approaching you. we as humans have an instinct, and if you feel unsure about someone "for no particular reason", try to listen to it - for example, if someone who seems off to you is about to go into an elevator with you, just wait for the next one even if it means you will look weird.

Everyone, go follow the channel “active self protection”. John over there has a lot of really good food for thought even if you’re against carrying a firearm you can still learn very valuable tips and lessons. His videos aren’t always for the faint of heart and they can be very sad but there are lessons that need to be learned. My recommendation would be to carry a very high output flashlight on you at all times, something that is very intense and that can blind an attacker or let you positively identify a threat. The best flashlight brands are going to be Surefire, Streamlight, and Olight. You’d be surprised at how effective a really bright light is in the face of an attacker, it shouldn’t be relied upon fully but it can be effective.

If someone attacks you, try to give them a disadvantage. Pull out an eye, stab their neck, etc. You want to hurt them in a way that would improve your chances of survival. Since they have already been planning the attack, they have the adrenaline already pumped up, which reduces their pain intake. Kicking someone in the nutsack or punching will hardly do anything. Causing them to lose vision will be difficult for them, or aim to make them lose a significant amount of blood. Also, injure your attacker in a way that will make them obvious when the police/medics find them. If you manage to bite something off, they're bound to go to a hospital. Doctors will call the police, which will lead to them being discovered. Keep this in mind if you're fighting back. Try to scratch your attacker, deep as you possibly can. Police check under fingernails, so their DNA will be stored there. You need a way for the attacker to be possibly found, which is where DNA comes into play. Pulling out hair isn't a reliable option, so focus on scratching them. Try to remember something that stands out about them. Some of these things could be tattoos, moles, birthmarks, bright hair colour (unnatural things like blue, purple, etc.) and many more. If you give a height and weight only, the police will have a difficult time tracking your attacker, as it'll be more vague. Be descriptive and detailed about your attacker when describing them. If you run away, don't waste all your stamina. Try hiding, too. Attackers will attempt to chase you down until you can no longer run. Be very careful if you hide, though. And make sure you choose the right time to hide. If you hide, you also obviously want to be very cautious and alert. Hope this helps, guys!

(PLEASE READ) A knife is only efficient when used by professionals and people who have trained with them. Its really easy to turn the knife on someone if you have more experience than them with knife fights. It’s not a good idea to carry around a knife as defense unless you’ve been trained by professionals. The other “pointy” objects in the video are ineffective if the attacker is wearing a jacket or sweater if some sort. Tasers can also be easily turned on you as well because they take a long time to use, and have to be directly against the skin of to do any actual damage to your attacker. There’s different “weapons” for people with different levels of experience and knowledge about self-defense. I’m not trying to guide people away from feeling secure, just trying to warn people about what not that many people talk about.

For the ladies, and gentlemen, I recommend getting a tactical pen with a flat end, so y’all can get a better grip on the pen while you are trying to stab someone. Also, I don’t quite recommend the self defense ring because punching normally with it is not possible. If you wanted to punch forward with it, you would have to tilt your hand up. I recommend going for hook punches with that. The whistle , button, and pepper sprays are best if you have time to react. I recommend getting something that you can carry in you pocket that you can use to inflict pain. The lama pepper spray bottle is kinda cool though. Furthermore, getting a Perrier spray that looks like a lipstick canister, is a good idea because it is the most inconspicuous. Also, thanks for the noise warnings.

They are all happy to see me and give me a warm welcome. To everyone out there that's been through trauma, it is hard to heal, sometimes the wounds close up as scars but things do get better. It will be hard to gaze into the light when it brightens your dark world, it may even be blinding and scary but there are those who are willing to stand by you and guide you.

PSA: If you get taken in a car, you can use the headrest and either smash or pry the window. For smashing, you would use the metal rods NOT on the middle of the window but on the corners. You can also pry it by wedging the metal rod in between the rubber and window. For smashing theres a good 30 second video demonstrating it kzbin.info/www/bejne/p5jHZ3psbbJnmMU And for the second method heres the link kzbin.info/www/bejne/qou3kmuEnZWJoqc

Thank you! I live in the city and I’m getting older and at the point where my parents think I’m old enough to go to walk around the city/ go to stores, restaurants, etc by my house. I used to walk with my brother if I wanted, but now that my brother is at college I would have to go alone. Buying one or more of these would really make me feel secure and I’ve been looking into some self defense items, so thank you for reviewing these!

Thanks for this! This is a really good list - I'm a security professional, and a lot of this is in line with what we'd recommend. It's often very hard for us to get this info to the widest audience possible, so thank you for covering it so well! I'd add two points: 1. It's important to research local regulations on knives, pepper spray, stun guns and other such items. Knives or any other stabby weapons can be very effective in extreme situations, but also very illegal and can pose serious risks to the person wielding one in self-defense. Anything that can be grabbed out of your hand and potentially used to seriously injure or incapacitate you should, at the very least, come with some good training. Please weigh these options carefully. 2. There are different philosophies/approaches used throughout the industry, but I'd focus on two guiding principles here: make yourself a difficult target (not worth the effort) and, if you have to, prioritize startling a potential attacker to discourage/disorient them over preemptively attacking them. What that looks like for each individual person will depend on their lifestyle, location, risk profile, etc, but the idea with both principles is to avoid direct confrontation if at all possible. That door bar is AWESOME, and an excellent example of putting the first principle into practice. As for the second, we've traditionally promoted the use of personal alarms over pepper spray because the screeching should be disorienting enough and it won't harm the potential victim; however, the gel version is definitely a good backup to have (IF legal in your area!). For travel, I'd recommend a doorstop alarm - weighs nothing, about the size of a stapler, costs about $10, will fit any type of door, screeches like a banshee should your door ever budge. If there are any windows accessible from the ground, you can add a window alarm as well - it'll yeowl if its two parts are ever separated, ie if the window is opened from the outside. Hope this was helpful. Thanks again for a great overview!

On the ouija board self defense thing, the reason you take it off the chain is when you really need to use it, because it’s a key chain so it would be attached to it a bag or something, and you can’t defend yourself with it if it’s stuck to a bag, so you would pull it and it would come off and be a useable weapon.

Thank you so much! I’ve been looking for stuff like this, there’s been two women kidnapped in my neighborhood over the past 3 weeks so I’ve been wary. My state doesn’t allow people to carry tasers and when one of my friends was attacked the pepper spray didn’t fully immobilize the guy and she still got robbed. My college doesn’t allow weapons so these are perfect, I really like the pen

For people who live in countries where these things are illegal, here are some personal tips(I can’t guarantee that you will be safe with them) - KEYS! I always have a key in my hand -instead of pepper spray: use a deodorant, heat protection, hair spray, etc. - carry a pencil with u(eg a stainless steel one) that will hurt like hell -have a fork in your bag(I know it sounds dumb lmao)

Great range of items discussed....but tasers, knives and pepper spray are illegal to carry in a lot of cities. Check with the local police before carrying these items around. I would rather be arrested than raped or killed (obviously) and I believe you should be able to defend yourself in a serious way....but you should know you could get into serious trouble regardless of the circumstances.

Would love to see another video about safety while travel, especially solo and/or other women/femmes. While in Paris last month, a man followed me and my friend and began harassing us on a busy street. We panicked and ran away. We were so startled in the moment and didn’t think to call the police but ended up filing a report later. A video on safety such as looking up local police and emergency numbers, making copies of your documents prior to travel in case you get mugged/your items get stolen, etc would be so helpful!

I feel like that necklace with the alert button is really smart. If there were to ever be a situation where it's not outright violent but you're being held against your will and need to be discreet, a situation where you need to stay quiet or hidden, or if you were to be kidnapped and your stuff was taken from you - this thing would be a literal life saver. I'm completely sold on having this and wearing it just as an everyday accessory. Even if it's rare, it's better to spend money on that once than not do it and not have it in that moment.

Hey Stephanie, Thank you for this video!!! In october I was walking my dog when I saw a man literally getting out of my car that was parked right outside of my building. I always thought I would know what to do but when you're in the moment, you act differently. I chased the asshole and I was about to jump on him when he got on his skateboard and left. Since then I haven't been able to step outside of my house at night and I've been looking for items to help me feel safe. I usually carry a knife but I will now be adding a pepper spray to my dog's leash. Thank you for taking your time to make this, not a lot of people would make a video on this.

I could see the self defense pen working great, especially in an office setting. If someone were to have a co worker or boss attempt to harm them, they could easily use the pen without the perpetrator even suspecting that it is a self defense weapon. It also seems perfect for instances in an uber or lyft. I should get one of these lol 🙏
