In today's video, we are going to talk about the En-route wind chart.
You will learn how to read an En-route wind chart and how to extrapolate the data that you need for your flight.
The difference between the en-route wind chart and the significant weather chart is that on the wind chart you only have the information regarding the wind intensity, wind direction, and temperature.
These charts are issued by the World Area Forecast Center and are issued every 6 hours.
You should choose the right en-route wind chart for your flight Cruise Level/Altitude, because, these charts are issued for different flight levels.
The wind intensity is indicated by three symbols, a full black triangle, a long line, and a short line. The triangle indicates a wind intensity of 50kt, the longer line indicates 10kt, and the smaller line indicates 5kt.
You can spot the Jet streams, or areas where there is no wind, by looking at the chart.
So, when you are planning a flight make sure you check this chart in order to know what will be your average wind component.

Good morning captain, when possible I wish you make a video on the weather chart related to the vertical flight profile, with the analysis of the effect of tropopause altitude and its possible changes throughtout the flight. Thanks!

You mention in the description that the charts are issued every six hours, but do you keep track of any other update on a tablet, for example? Also the ATC tends to update wind information during flight for what I could notice, so does that information contradict the charts sometimes? Finally, could you say the name of the software you use as your whiteboard, please? Great video and it's amazing how those symbols combined give you a calculation of the total wind speed. They are just like the Roman numbers in how you interpret them.

Many thanks for your great comment! Remember these charts are forecasts, so the real wind, when flying, could change, normally these charts are very accurate. Sketchbook is the software I use..

Can you make a video about temperature limits for aircraft opreations? For example what happens if the OAT on the airport exceeds 50 C or 60 C or -20 C ect.

Hello Captain! As an airline pilot you have to look for those charts by yourself, or airline is providing them before each flight?

OK, now i know wind intensity but what about wind direction? I need that to know if having head wind or tail wind in order to calculate fuel consumption during cruise. Could u please explain that?
@PILOTCLIMB
@PILOTCLIMB 10 ай бұрын
That's correct! Headwind will make you burn more fuel, tailwind less fuel fuel.
