A few fun facts: Whitney Houston originally wanted to play Cinderella, but by the time the movie was greenlit, she decided to play the godmother and handpicked Brandy for the role. Paolo Montalban (the prince) was the last man to audition for the role. Also, his reaction to seeing Brandy at the ball was genuine (according to him). There were several white actresses that were uncomfortable being the step-mom that treated their black step-daughter terribly and thus passed on the role. The script writers wanted to throw in Seinfeld jokes, but Jason Alexander threatened to leave the role if they did. Whoopie wore real diamonds for the entire movie, which caused the budget to skyrocket.

The sets are inspired by the art nouveau artist Gustav Klimt's work. And the outdoor spaces were built on the same sound stage as The Wizard of Oz, and I think the spirit of that film comes across even if the sets are different. :)

@@PinkPopcast , The Royal family were in "matching" shades of purple throughout most of the movie because in the past it was so expensive to dye fabrics purple the color was set aside for royalty only. That 's why for a few years during the 80's the late musician Prince always dressed in purple to perform. His hit Purple Rain is a song but also the name of a movie he did. I think it could also be heard as Purple Reign which plays off his name "Prince"

it gets a little confusing because it does look blue in some lights (i.e. at the beginning of the 'so this is love' song because they were in the shadows), but yes, at best it has some light blue in it but is mostly silvery blue. The video cover I had of the movie made her dress look blue but it was one extremely light blue not what the franchise later gave her. Plus, the franchise switched hers and Aurora/Sleeping Beauty's hair, made Aurora the strawberry blonde and Cinderella the light haired blonde

This movie, this movie!!! It has a special place in my heart. It was my introduction to Whitney Houston when I was a toddler. And I have been an avid fan ever since. Now I can't watch the movie without crying. Rest in peace Whitney and Rest in peace Natalie. The final song "There Is music in you" blew my 4-year-old mind. this is my favorite version of Cinderella forever and always and I was so glad that Brandy and Paulo came back to reprise their roles as Prince Charming and Cinderella for the new Descendants movie that was great.

I remember renting this DVD often from my local library so many times. It was one of those movies I just truly enjoyed as a kid. It wasn’t til later I found out about the actual musical and just continued to replay the soundtrack nonstop for many years to come. Also fun fact about Cinderella’s dress: you’re right. Disney made her blue dress synonymous with our girl. However in the Grimms’ version the ball was three nights and she had three different dresses (one that shone like the stars, one like the moon and one like the sun). Each culture’s version of Cindy’s dress is different like I think the Chinese one had feathers and silks and gold slippers. Just thought to share that with you guys. Thanks for the reaction. No one asked for this, but I'm going to explain some of the milkmaid stuff. Basically, for a really long time in Western Europe, the milkmaid was the idealised female peasant. There are few reasons for this, like, you have to be really clean to make cheese and butter, so snobbery worked in their favour, and it was a good job, so they had more money. But the best known reason is because of smallpox. Smallpox was the scary disease of the time, it killed a lot of people and if you survived you would often have a lot of really bad scarring. But people started to notice that milkmaids got it a lot less often, and if they did, it was less likely to kill them, and the scarring was usually not as bad. So they got the reputation of being more beautiful and healthier than the other peasant girls and that led to them being romanticised a whole bunch. Of course, the real reason they didn't get smallpox as much was because they would catch a similar disease from the cows they tended, one unimaginatively called cowpox, which would immunise them against smallpox. Cowpox wasn't as lethal and didn't leave scars like smallpox so every time smallpox rolled through Western Europe it would leave a lot of people dead or horribly scarred behind it. Except for the milkmaids, who would basically be fine. Anyway, this led to people thinking of milkmaids as more beautiful and protected from disease, which made them popular. It also helped make vaccinations a thing in Europe, look up Edward Jenner for more info on that. And now, I will stop writing this essay and go back to watching the video! Loving it btw!

For what it's worth the Descendants version of them is an alternate universe situation. So it's them as a version of Cinderella and Charming - and they retroactively did the blind casting for their children since their son Chad is a white male and their daughter introduced in the 4th movie is a biracial black girl - but you can think of the casting as more of a mythology gag than a continuation of this movie exactly.

It's hard to believe in the era of physical media in the '90s that this one never received a soundtrack CD. Apparently all the tracks were recorded and then Brandy's and Whitney's agents could not come to an agreement, so it was never released. You can still find the recordings in hidden corners of the internet, though. Even though I grew up with the Leslie Ann Warren version from 1966, I have to say this one is still my favorite. And did you know that Julie Andrews was the first R&H Cinderella back in the '50s?

i love this film so much, i always loved that the King was well Canadian, love Victor Gruber so much, the Queen played by the divine Whoopi Goldberg was African American and Prince, Paulo Montaban was Phillapinio, and it never was mentioned, no one made a big deal and all of them were so good. in a film that was made in 1997. and no one made a big deal about it. even the "ugly sisters" well i had a total crush on Natalie Desselle-Reid who played Mineva...may the actress rest in peace xx one was African American and the other caucasian. it was like, "we're diverse, it's a musical, it's a classic. now just enjoy it"

The Rodgers & Hammerstein (rhymes with "mine") musical version of Cinderella was created for TV, as a vehicle for Julie Andrews. After that live telecast in the 1950s (a black-and-white kinescope survives), another version was telecast in the 60s, and then this one. It has also been adapted for the stage, though it didn't get to Broadway till 2013. This one added 3 songs by Rodgers with various lyricists, that aren't in the other telecasts. That maybe explains why "Falling in Love with Love" doesn't quite fit the situation.

The Julie Andrews version is fun to watch -- she's very young and just starting to be a name (years before making her first movie), and also there are the little glitches of live performance with no retakes. (You should react to it!!) Another of the added songs is "The Sweetest Sounds," which Rodgers wrote after the death of Hammerstein, writing the lyrics himself. I like that one a lot, and think it's well staged and well performed here.

Trivia regarding Cinderella ball gowns: In the 1965 version with Leslie Anne Warren, she wore a sparkling white dress with fur trim around the shoulders. They deliberately did not want blue. The skirt weighed like 25 pounds and if you watch them dancing, the Prince was swinging her so wide just so she wouldn’t get dragged down by how heavy it was.

One of the magical effects in the fairy tale is that Cinderella had a spell on her to keep her from being recognized when she was at the ball. It takes away most of the things people bring up as plot holes, but i can't think of any adaptation that mentions it

THIS MOVIE IS EVERYTHING. TH SETS! THE COSTUMING! THE DANCE NUMBERS! THE BLIND CASTING! THE CAMP OF IT ALL! My favorite part is the blind casting. They really got the BEST people they could and I never noticed as a kid that the families didn’t “match” or how that level of blind casting was somewhat revolutionary for its time (abd even now honestly). The step family is my favorite and honestly the most talented trio in the film. Just their facial reactions and posture are 10/10 perfect. This film made me love musicals and nothing has come close to it for me since. R.I.P Natalie Desselle. She was so beautiful and talented.

I love this version I watched this a lot as a kid! it's my favorite version of cinderella- that is called cinderella ( my other favorite is ever after). The cast, music and choreography is amazing and ICONIC! Bernadette Peters depiction of the wicked step mother is so good. This version of the iconic dress is my favorite out of all the iterations and brandy and Whitney sung amazing together and look gorgeous! Brandy and Paolo montalban (the prince) reunited and reprised their roles for the newest descendants film. Rogers and hamerstein were known for /regarded as having some of the hardest music to sing in musicals- the lyrics were complicated and the speed at which it had to be sung is insanely fast besides cinderella a good example is into the woods. The 1957 Tv version of roger's and hamerstien's cinderella starred Julie Andrews as cinderella. having the royals all wear purple was clearly intentional- purple has been used to emphasize royalty in media for a very long time to signify wealth ( purple dye was rare originally and expensive). in atleast three versions they make it clear that the step mother marries the dad for security and/or for the sake of her kids. Cinderella's dress being blue is because of Disney's version- it was very successful and they wanted to capitalize on the popularity by making costumes of the dress for kids to wear but they had to change the color of the dress to blue because if they were worried that if the dress was produced in the original color it would look like a wedding dress. the step mother does say "there is something vaguely familiar about that girl" when they dance past them- so the sisters may be dense but they did make the step mother not completely clueless. when this was dropped on Disney plus Todrick Hall did a video in celebration playing the prince and collaborated with brandy and a lot of the other cast members. it took until rewatching as an adult to understand that common meant commoner (at great that's how interpreted it)- not titled or part of the upper class. in the original the father is a merchant and in ever after he's a swordsman.

Cinderella's dress was originally Silver and in the shadows of the dancing scenes blue ish when Disney made the film. They came out with updated versions and for Princess marketing reasons turned the dress blue. Since I saw the original, I always wanted a silver Cindrella dress.

This was the Cinderella I was introduced to as a little girl. I was obsessed, and still know every word in this film. When I was older I tried watching the other versions of Cinderella and was so disappointed. Brandy is the one true Cinderella. 💜
