Not too bothered about the looks. What I care about is whether it's properly optimised for streaming and gaming apps because let's face it, that is the purpose of the internal display. As far as I'm aware, the last Fold didn't support HDR or Dolby Vision on any streaming platform. If Google optimises this version (including for Geforce Now) and improves the speakers, then I'm sold.

The aspect ratio is more square on the new one which is already a huge L for videos since it's even further from 16:9 than the first one. Unless you crop/zoom in most videos are only a bit bigger when played on the internal display

This right here. I have a Z Fold 3 and can say that Samsung makes great use if the inner screen from a software perspective. That said, the outer screen makes for a tedious experience imho. Waiting for whichever company can put it all together. Too bad some of the best options are outside the U.S. right now.

And then the cameras use the pill shape on the new Fold. iPhone has rounded rectangles, and Samsung has… Sharp pointed rectangles. And there aren’t too many options… No one wants to make a circular phone

It's because of reviewers like MKBHD that people don't like "small phones". The only people to complain about their Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, or Twitter not displaying 10% more information are techtubers. Meanwhile, in a vacuum where we don't have to get our opinions from influences, the smaller 16:9 design (which WAS the original smartphone aspect ratio!) is a lot more ideal for reaching all corners of the phone and not dropping it.

Idk about that. I've been a big fan of Marques for a while and historically disliked larger phones due to how poorly they fit in my hand. I almost exclusively use my phone for watching videos and taking photos, so I always got away with a traditional sized phone. Once the S22 Ultra dropped, I decided to bit the bullet on the larger screen in order to get the best camera possible. Now, I'm pretty much hooked. I found that if you get something to assist with holding it (I prefer LoveHandle, though PopSockets are also good) then most of the handling problems are solved. The Pixel 9 Pro does seem like it's going to have a solid camera array though, so maybe that line is something I'll have to consider looking into in a couple years. Outside of generally holding it, my biggest issue with larger phones is that they don't fit very well into universal holders (for bikes, scooters, drone controllers, etc) but it seems like having an attachment stuck to the back is an equal contributor there, and I'm not sure I'll ever be able to get rid of using one 😭

This comment feels like putting words in people's mouths. I know in my case, I had an iPod Touch that I stopped using BECAUSE it was too dang small, which is why I made sure when I upgraded to an Android phone (I hated iOS) that I would make sure it was as big as I possibly could afford. And I'm super happy with sticking with big phones since because most of what I do on my phone, I like to see as much as possible. Spreadsheets, KZbin, documents. I don't care one bit about one hand use of my phone because I use both hands for my phone all the time. The only issue with big phones is that they can't fit in your pocket as well. But all the advantages in battery life and screen size more than make up for it.

The reason the cameras look like that is because, originally, the Pixel Fold was not part of the Pixel 9 lineup, which was supposed to be released six months before. Therefore, they have two different design philosophies.

This isn't true though because the first Fold has a visor with most of the same design philosophy as the other Pixel 9 designs, I guarantee it's a packaging thing where it's too wide to fit and instead of repackaging the parts in it they just put the "beans" on 2 rows (probably to share sub assemblies between the devices)

The original fold came out prior to the 8 lineup. The finally did something smart and delayed the Fold 2 to launch alongside the 9 series. So no the "Fold 2" was granted extra time in the oven to ensure their most expensive phone was behind 9 months on their top of the line chip. The reality is we're getting a July-designed Pixel Fold 2 with a new processor but worse cameras than the 9 and an older design philosophy that doesn't match the rest of the lineup. You can't create a new phone from the ground up in a couple of months. It's the same phone we would have gotten months ago, but released today with a slightly better processor.

I've owned my 7 pro for several years now. The durability and screen quality is industry standard, only one minor scratch in the screen. The CPU I agree. Underpowered Exynos chip with Tensor slapped on it. I'm gonna stick with pixel though for the minimal UI/bloatware, camera, and relative affordability

Funny, my Pixel 7 Pro died of "Power Issue" in 6 months and its replacement developed a dark spot on the screen within weeks of arrival. Considering that none of the previous pixel I owned (a 3XL and a 5) lasted more than 2 years, when the third P7Pro came I sold it sooo fast and jumped ship since.

@@yemetrica In fairness it will still do those fairly well, it just makes it even worse for 16:9 stuff. Btw do you have a MagSafe case on yours? I've heard that's a common cause of screen switching issues, mine's been pretty flawless in that department except for the occasional brief switch with my MagSafe power bank when removing it but some cases did have magnets too close to the screen sensor that were causing inappropriate screen switching. Could also be a software issue still, but if it is a magnetic case it might be easily fixable

Almost all camera bumbs are ugly, and I still suffer internally every time I see an iPhone on a table. There are some designs like the pixel 8 visor and some chinese phones that merge it fully into part of the phone, and they end up looking better, but in the end they're all sticking out of the otherwise perfect rectangle.

The reason it's irritating is because they had a working design with the visor and chose not to use it. I'm sure there's a reason for that (my personal guess is that the visor for the 9 series contains 2 sub assemblies that they've just rearranged instead of having a dedicated packaging layout, which would have been doable with the same hardware but more expensive) but you still can't help but look at the better visor setup and be disappointed

I'm not too bothered about big camera bumps but I wish manufacturers would include them in the phone dimensions. A 5mm thick phone with an extra 5mm bump is 10mm thick not 5mm.
