Thank you for telling your story Joey! I have been binge watching your videos after getting lab results back with high cholesterol (over 200) for the first time in my life. I have been vegan for 10 years and something happened last year I guess, still trying to figure out what made my cholesterol go up so high. Anyway, I got an Instant Pot with an air fryer after watching your meal prep video so I can stop roasting veggies and see if that helps my numbers go back down. I look forward to every new video!

Morning Jay. I am a 59yr Indigenous male from the U.S. I became a vegan strictly because of my love for all sentient beings. My ancestors are from Borikén (Puerto Rico). My Taino mother was a poor hardworking maid and cook. Her fantastic cooking and her love for animals got me started on a long and complex journey of learning and questioning everything we as human animals eat. I would have lengthy heart to hearts with my parents over our meat eating culture in the U.S. At times my parents would get frustrated with me due to my deep, empathetic love of our animal brethren. Fast forward to the present day, I now realize that everything we do harms animals. If we drive, take medications, see doctors, the clothes we buy, almost everything we buy impacts animals. Still, I chose to change my eating habits for less harm done. Now, I am pretty much settled into my foods. I do struggle with expenses of a well rounded, nutritionally balanced vegan diet. I had to temporarily leave the U.S. to live in Borikén. Here veganism is not common and often criticized as hippy tree hugging nonsense. I am never phased. I am autistic (Asbergers syndrome), gay and impoverished. Still I refuse to deliberately harm other sentients. I am grateful for stories such as yours and those of other humans making tough decisions against societal "norms". Please continue to share your story and foods. This is a troubled world and we have no choice but to continue navigating the stormy waters of a world in turmoil. At least we hope to gain some piece of mind while we push on. Thank you Jay.

When we lived in Costa Rica I was driving behind a truck crammed with pigs. They were very aware of their circumstances and where they were going because they were desperate to escape. They were panic stricken. They weren’t just dumb animals peacefully riding along. It broke my heart to see those little faces and their eye wide and wild looking. No more pork for me at that point.

I started eating a wfpd 3rd week of January 2021 did amazing. Stayed away from processed food. Lost 35lbs blood all my numbers went down. I have a weakness for Lays potatoes chips just love them. When they say you can't just eat one, they are right. December of 2021 I "thought" I could eat a few. Not on your life. I am still struggling to get my food addiction under control. I have a numerous health issue and raising my 3 yr old grandson. I turned 57 this passed April. I gained some weight back and I feel like crap. I want to get this under control. My husband and son are meat eaters. Oh and we are farmers. I use to raise cattle, not anymore. I know better now. Trying to convince my hubby to change, no way.

Too many people do not realize half of what you laid out in this Video. Plus being vegetarian/vegan does not equal 🟰 healthy. Diabetes is caused by over consuming fat and sugar( processed sugar) the combination blocks insulin to the cells. It is a fallacy that it is caused by eating too many fruits, it is more likely eating to many cakes, cookies, and other high fat sugar ratio so called foods. I was diagnosed pre diabetic and borderline obese 17 years ago. Right after my husband passed from heart disease. It has turned into a passion of mine to become the best and healthiest version of me. Plus to share my food with others so they can taste how good or better heal the y food can taste. As a Vegan there is no missing out on flavor or satisfying foods. Thank you for your Chanel and sharing your reason for being a vegan. Aloha 😎

Love this ❤ Thank you for sharing! I had the same experience, in the way of being long-term vegetarian, but totally unaware of dairy, and eggs being unethical, until my husband showed me Food Inc. in 2012. ...I had already eaten high raw vegan at that point, for 3 years, for my health. But, to really have that reality sink in, and realize I wasn't as ethical as I always thought I'd been lol 😂❤ Going on 15 years this November, as a healthy vegan - and love hearing other people's stories. Yours is awesome 😎 Thanks for sharing your lives, and recipes! Have a wonderful Summer ❤

Love this video, love your family. I was the opposite. I went WFPB after my bp was crazy high, and after a blood test found cholesterol, triglycerides and blood sugar was too. I was give 4 perceptions and sent home. I only filled the one for hbp. I went WFPB that day. 29 days later, my follow up blood test showed, all was in normal. 7 months later, I was able to stop the rx for hbp. I am now WFPB for the animals too, and more environmentally responsible. Love that you explain vegan is about what you don't eat, wfpb is about what to eat.

“I can’t un-know what I know.” I think this is key, specifically it’s what separates a vegan life from a carnivorous one. I don’t know what the mechanism is that makes one person say “I can’t be part of this, this is wrong, this is barbaric” to the point of being unable to go near the meat or fish case in a supermarket, from another who says “Well, gee, that’s awful”, but is so far removed from associating or connecting to the horror of it that it doesn’t connect the raw thing in the market, the raw thing they are handling, cooking and eating, to a sentient being who is being tortured. I don’t (actually, I can’t) look at videos or pictures of the reality of industrial farming or fishing, I just “know”, and I can’t un-know.

I’m a brand new vegan as of January 2023. I’m collecting vegan and plant based cooking channels and subscribing to each one so I can learn from different people. I love that you shared your background on how to changed. Just like you, I was also overweight and on the edge of getting diabetes. Since January I’ve lost 29 pounds, lost several waste sizes, reversed diabetes, and solved some ankle swelling along the way. I have no reason to go back. I feel so much better at age 65 than ever before. I have fallen in love with cooking, trying new fruits & vegetables, and adding more unusual varieties of potatoes, mushrooms, and the awesome legume family to my diet. I no longer dread stepping on the scale since cutting out the massive amounts of hidden fats, oils, salt, and sugar from restaurant food. It’s almost automatic to lose weight on a HEALTHY vegan diet. My wife is still clinging to chicken and tuna and salmon, but actually loves that I’m so much healthier now. She’s curious and that’s the first step. All the best! 😎🥇⭐️🥳🏆📚📚🌠

Hello Jay, I am glad your channel randomly came into my feed. I too am an ethical vegan that much like you just randomly fell into it but once I did a little research there was absolutely no going back. People ask me if it is 'hard' being vegan, I imagine they think it is like being on some sort of strict diet that denies them everything they truly want to eat. My experience is not that at all! Being vegan just constantly gets better as I discover new ingredients and ways of preparing food. Like yourself I don't purchase animal products and check labels but I don't 'preach' or 'judge' people, but if someone asks me a question I am very prepared to provide them with info and resources like a reference to good vegan cooking channels! One thing that has changed allot for me in the past few years is that I have moved away from all the processed vegan food. Ironic because years ago I used to wish that there were more vegan prepackaged fast food options. Now I am much more interested in whole foods without preservatives and honestly after eating this way I do feel much healthier.

Mahalo for sharing 🥰 Very sweet story! I’m WFPB and vegan too. I’m with you. I can eat potatoes 24/7! I strayed from being vegan for a while. “Luckily” I had a gallstone attack and emergency surgery on Memorial Day. I say luckily because along with the 8.5mm gallstone and bile sludge; I was diagnosed with fatty liver and the beginning of pre diabetes along with a distended gallbladder that was removed two weeks ago. ! I thought I was healthy, but could have easily died from the infection if I hadn’t been forced by my friends to go to the Emergency Room! I didn’t want to have my gall bladder removed, but it took six weeks before I had the surgery. In that time I went totally vegan and back to Dr MacDougall’s Starch Solution 50/50 plate. I have lost 25 pounds so far and all my test reports were normal at my PreOp exam! I still have a long way to go to get back to my healthy weight ( 60 more lbs to lose). I am determined to stick to the plan since this was my warning shot and it definitely got my attention! I have known and followed all my WFPB heroes for years and even helped my friend put her cancer in remission by cooking for her using Macrobiotics over 24 years ago. SO…I definitely knew better. My addiction is fried chicken and anything deep fried, but I have said good bye to those days and my addiction to Peanut M&Ms 😵💫🙀. Mahalo for all the fun videos and recipe ideas. They are encouraging to watch and know I’m not alone. BTW: I am 78 years old so it is never to late to be Vegan/WFPB😘 ALOHA, Mary B in Hawai’i

Vegan for about 10 years now. Something clicked in my head when I read Skinny Bitch back then. I thought it would be just a funny diet book and it was actually so much more. It’s been quite a journey but like you felt, I just couldn’t contribute any longer to all the suffering I learned about as I continued to educate myself. I can’t unlearn what I now know. Just went through menopause at 57 finally (TMI) and realized I wasn’t really paying attention to being a healthy vegan. Revisited SS and cleaned up my diet. I love the simplicity. I love that I am respectful of my body, my fellow earthlings and the planet. Great video. Thank you!

Oats, peanuts, and pistachios, I'm sensitive to these things because of cross contamination from where they are processed. Anyway, thanks for sharing.

Great video - I originally became whole food plant based for health reasons. But the more I learned about how animal based products get to the supermarket shelf, the more I transitioned to bring a full whole food plant based vegan. It’s pretty difficult here in southwest Florida. Many restaurants have zero vegan options, so going out to dinner is difficult. But, l can’t see eating any other way at this point. Not only has my health improved immensely, but I am helping the animals and the environment. It’s a win win 😊

My vegetarian journey started when I was 5 or 6 and I suddenly realized the chicken leg I was eating was an actual leg with bones and veins. I ate very little meat up until I turned 16 or so and heard the song Meat is Murder by The Smiths (this was 1987 or 1988) and I went vegetarian. I had always loved vegetables so that part was easy but in the 80s in a small town in the Midwest... people thought I was a weirdo for sure! It wasn't until 5 years ago that I finally went vegan, eggs being my main holdout (I never really liked cheese). The day I learned about what happens to male chicks in the egg industry was the day I went fully vegan. Finally, I went mostly WFPB at the beginning of 2020 after recovering from being extremely sick (I'm sure I had covid before we knew it was a thing). I had lost my sense of taste and the only thing that was palatable was potatoes. I started looking to see if you could live on only potatoes and came across a video by Krocks in the Kitchen. That led me down a rabbit hole where I discovered Dr Barnard which then led me to others like Chef AJ and you!

Have you come across Andrew Spudfit Taylor? I think his story was something like he knew he was a food addict, and to completely sever his connection with addiction and difficulties in understanding what foods to eat, anxiety around dieting and counting calories, etc... he vowed to simply eat only potatoes for a year. And he did it! Look him up to find out more. He now helps people to do their own Spudfit challenges to give themselves a break from food and reset their mental outlook around it. And no, he didn't get sick, and he had plenty of protein during his potatoes-only year. :>) Interesting guy and story.

Hello, I went vegan because a friend of mine wanted to try the raw food diet and wanted me to join her. This was Winter and I said let's wait till summer when salads are a lot more exciting. When I was ready in summer she was so over the idea. Raw was good till about 4:00 p.m. then I couldn't do it anymore for dinner. So eventually I switched to vegan. Been vegan about 10 years. Thanks for the recipes, always nice to hear some new things to try. Awesome day Connie The funniest part of the raw food diet was nobody would steal my lunch out of the refrigerator at school. I became a vegetarian 39 years ago while at college because the cost of meat was so high and I was living in a communal house where everyone else was vegetarian / vegan. I was diagnosed with diabetes in 1998 and have been on medication for the majority of that time. In 2018 (I think) I started watching Jane Esselstyn's channel and this was because my partner who is older than me had heart problems and was overweight. I converted to a whole food plant based diet and have lost 40 kg (88 pounds) and though I have not stopped completely my diabetes medication I have stopped one tablet and halved the other. In fact since I had my flare up of my autoimmune disease at the beginning of this year when the treatment involved a medication which screwed with my blood sugar my figures have been frighteningly low. I have an appointment with my diabetologist next month so we will see what happens. My clothes sizes are now smaller than when I went to college aged 18! What they don't mention is that you have to buy new clothes and shoes when you lose weight on a whole food plant based diet!

I am so glad this video came up in my feed. My journey started in 2018. I just couldn’t keep eating meat. My mom has always told me I am too kind hearted and is against eating this way because she doesn’t think it gives the proper nutrition. I don’t try to convince her. She is 90. I don’t know anyone who is vegan. That would help. I don’t feel I’m much of a cook so I’m thankful it sounds like you share recipes. And that’s probably why I haven’t done very well at it. I know I feel better when I eat vegan but need variety. I won’t do recipes where I have to hunt down ingredients that are used once. I live in a small town but I do go to the city to Whole Foods. I just need help badly. I eat badly especially when I’m stressed. It’s been my constant companion for a long while but got worse two years ago when my husband had a stroke and we found he has some form of dementia. He also had part of his leg amputated earlier this year so I retired to take care of him, my mom and my brother. Very stressful. Thank you so much for the video! I am going to watch your other videos.

Thank you for sharing your journey! Some parts really strike a cord for me. I started out a protest vegan at the beginning of the pandemic, turned into a health concious vegan, and now find myself an ethical vegan, no turning back! I loved this video, will be waiting to find out what is happening in your future!

I just now watched this video. I don’t know how I missed it. This is very informative. I know I need to go from vegetarian to vegan. I have high cholesterol and am pre-diabetic. I also have non-alcoholic fatty liver. Thank you for the great information. ❤

Enjoyed your explanation, I went from vegetarian to vegan/ plant base. It is amazing the education path I’m on. Some one asked me this week why won’t you eat meat? My reason is ethical. I don’t think it’s ok with the animal treatment, and have since found out it’s really not healthy for me. Just came across your channel. Thanks

I read Diet for a New America by John Robbins in 1988 and I could never eat meat, fish, or poultry again. 34 years for me.

Love the video and so get your issues with the MRI. I am also claustrophobic and had to have several MRI's after a blood vessel burst in my eye and blood dried on my optic nerve and caused loss of vision and alot of pain. I was sent by ambulance to a hospital 2 hours away and had surgery at 2 am. Luckily I regained most of my vision and recovery was easy. Good luck to you and may your surgery go as well as mine did.

Thanks for your vulnerability in this video. Its nice to hear the reasons that we all got to this table in life. I financially support PETA and WWF as well as PCRM because they are trusted (in my eyes) organizations that help the animals. There are others, and some have bad press on how they handle their funds, so I made my choices and that is how I too, help the animals- besides just eating plant based. And you know, working in the hospital makes you aware of the dangers of SAD eating.

👋 I went plant based because of Lupus and inflammation. One day while looking for recipes I came across your channel. My favorite is instant pot noodles. Keep up the good work. Thanks for sharing your story.

Oh and your Panera 10 veg soup was a game changer! I have made it so many times. My kids and I love it. My husband won’t give up meat but my kids eat what I eat.

I love that soup also. I just love that I can change up the veggies to whatever is in the fridge that needs to get used up.

I absolutely love you guys! I love your channel so much and this one…. This one is the best because you’ve taken the time to tell us your vegan story, your journey and the differences of a vegan and a plant based eater. I am a 7 year ethical vegan and a vegetarian for 15 years before that. I can relate to most of your story other than it was always about the animals for me. When you know exactly what’s going on.. I too just couldn’t be part of it. The shame today is that many do know but choose to “ignore”. Thank you Joey and Tim! I’m from Australia and I feel like I know you . Oh I just want to say also I raised my boys vegetarian and they also now are vegan. I’ve always been adamant to make sure they make educated and kind choices and when they too knew about the dairy and egg industries… there was no turning back and there was no chance they were going to ignore it as … that’s something I drilled into them to not ignore any harm done to any being simply for their pleasure. ❤💝💙💚🌻🌱

Thank you for sharing a longer version of your story. I love your authenticity. I have enjoyed your videos since I started trying to eat more vegetables to lose weight at the start of the pandemic. I have also returned to normal blood sugar after being pre diabetic since eating mostly the starch solution way. I love your recipes and I love your personality. Thank you Joey. You have me on the edge of my seat curious about your next video. 🤔

My husband and I went vegetarian first and then quickly turned vegan due to bloodwork that showed high cholesterol and pre diabetes. That was about 8 years ago. Bloodwork turned around pretty quickly and we enjoy eating good food that is not animal related.

I stopped eating pork years ago because I love pigs, then chicken started grossing me out. Beef and fish were the last bastions. Then I read that the biggest environmental impact that one person could make was to give up all animal products so I did. Best decision I’ve ever made. Need to drop a couple kilos though……unfortunately fries are always an option.

Hi Joey, I'm a 62 year old woman also in Phoenix, AZ. I went whole foods, plant based about 6 years ago. I was pre-diabetic also, but since the switch all of my blood work is normal every time. A couple of years ago, I kind of went into eating junk food vegan food. It was delicious, but full of fat and I stopped losing weight. I had already lost 65 pounds and then I was pretty much stuck (or maybe gained about 5 pounds). Then I heard about the Starch Solution about a year ago. But I didn't really incorporate most of Dr. McDougall's processes, until about 2 months ago when I found your videos. I was especially interested in the Mary's Mini concept and watched every video you put out about it. I finally did a Mary's Mini (potato) myself 2 weeks ago, and it was life changing! I dropped 5 pounds in 9 days and eating until I was full every day. It was surprisingly easy. I'm already planning my next Mary's mini (rice) when your Facebook group does it at the end of this month. Thanks for sharing your story in this video, and thanks for all the encouragement you give to your subscribers. I for one am learning and doing!

Interesting story. Thanks for sharing it. I watched the documentaries; they led me down the same path. Opened my eyes on how the animals that ended up on my plate were treated. Once you see and hear it, you can't un-see or un-hear it. My body feels so much healthier as a result. It's tough when your spouse is not on board. I've tried everything possible; but when someone is not willing to budge in their beliefs, I found that I have to let him pursue his own path. His doctor has convinced him to get on statins, as a "cautionary" step to reduce any chance of having a stroke. He doesn't have high cholesterol, but is on blood pressure meds. So, I just have to let him do what he feels is right for him. Again, great story.

Joey you absolutely warmed my heart with this video. I am Vegan and your story about the sofa hit home for me. I will sometimes get crap because I won't buy something that has any kinda animal products in it, ppl think it's a joke but I smile and go on with my day. I Love being Vegan

Awesome video, Joey! I went vegan overnight 30 years ago, but I wavered back and forth between vegan and vegetarian. I haven't eaten animals for 30 years though. I went back to veganism several years ago, and that's where I'll stay. I, too, did it for the animals once I found out the truth about how they're treated. Sadly, my partner of 25 years continued her meat-eating ways, and passed away 12 years ago. I never could convince her to go vegan. I'm 79 years old and on no medication, so there's something to be said about the benefits of veganism. I love your recipes, and videos. Keep up the good work! XOXOXO

Thank you for sharing your story! My husband, daughter, and I became vegetarians in 2013 for ethical reasons. In late 2018 we learned about what really goes on in the dairy and egg industries, and became vegans on January 1, 2019. We've all lost weight, feel much healthier, and have a clear conscience. You are right that each person has to make their own decisions, and I appreciate your tolerance of different choices.
