Fun fact about WANEGBT: Jake Gyllenhaal made fun of Taylor for writing “pop-y” music (and cheated on her with an indie singer) so when they broke up for the last time, Taylor set out to write the most catchy pop song ever so it would constantly get played on the radio and remind him of her. And she definitely succeeded. I just think it’s funny.

One of the most amazing things about All Too Well is that the song used to be incredibly hard for her to perform because of the heartbreak associated with it. But now... after her fans have turned it into this cult following thing, she has grown to associate it with memories of being with fans and performing for and connecting with them. Taylor Swift always has a running metaphor through each of her albums. In Red, it's Traffic Lights. In 1989, it's Clothes (Dresses, suit and tie, t-shirt, skirt etc), in Reputation, it's alcohol (beer, liquor, wine etc.). Lover had color Blue. Folklore has films/movies. Lover also has "City" as another metaphor running through the entire album. City, sidewalk, town, street, walls. She describes all of these as if she's "an architect, drawing up a plan". :) Edit: as I re-listened to "folklore", I realized that there's also constant reference to fire and ash, and also a lot of waters :)

I love the "crumpled up piece of paper lying here" bc when you take into account people typically crumple/ball up paper either out of carelessness or either in frustration, you can find different interoperation to why the person hurt her. It also paints a perfect picture of the aftermath of that heartbreak. When you crumple up a paper and try to smooth it out, that piece of paper wears its damage so so visibly. Another thing, ofc a crumpled paper still works, you can still write on it, but it's not easy, which basically goes back to her first verse in the song "And I might be okay, but I'm not fine at all", so she'll live and move on, but its so hard right to function (the same way the functionality of a crumpled piece of paper is compromised).

Lucky Ones is about Joni Mitchell and then herself. Joni Mitchell experienced the overload of attention and fame and abandoned it for peace. Some of the tones remind me of Joni's songs and of 70's folk pop. "The Moment I Knew" and "We are Never Getting Back Together" can be looked at together. Pretty sure they are written about the same person. I enjoy your reviews because of the combination of lyrics analysis and meter and rhythm. It is really unique in this space. I agree with another comment about Hozier but I would also be interested in other artists. I would love your reaction on older folk or jazz/blues. Gary Lightbody is the lead singer of Snow Patrol (most popular song by them is Chasing Cars). Most of the songs on the album (State of Grace, All Too Well, The Moment I Knew, Red, I Almost Do, We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together, The Last Time, Sad Beautiful Tragic) are about Jake Gyllenhaal. Fun fact: Taylor made WANEGBT such a pop sounding song because he hated pop. The songs that aren't about him are: The Lucky One- Either Joni Mitchell or Taylor's Grandmother, possibly both. Plus Taylor herself at the end I Knew You Were Trouble, Treacherous- John Mayer, a lot of the songs on Speak Now are about him. He was her worst boyfriend, dated her when he was 32 and she was 19. He called her writing a song about him a cruel use of her gift but he wrote a song about her too so??? The song Dear John she hasn't sung since the Speak Now tour even though she brings back her other old songs as suprise songs on tour stops since the song still hurts her Holy Ground- Making up with Joe Jonas, he has a few songs about him on Speak Now and Fearless cus he broke up with her over a 19 second phone call but they were just teens at the time and they're friends now 22- Ashley Avignone, Dianna Agron, Claire Winter Kislinger, Selena Gomez, and herself Stay, Stay, Stay- No one, just a daydream Starlight- Bobby and Ethel Kennedy. She saw a photo of them young and sneaking into a party and was inspired. Taylor met Ethel Kennedy and played the song for her Begin Again and Everything Has Changed- Conor Kennedy, no turmoil in that relationship Come Back, Be Here and Girl at Home- possibly Zac Efron, there's sort of tentative evidence for the first one but this is the loosest of the theories so they could easily not be about him

In The Lucky One, the first verses talk about someone in the industry that Taylor personally knew, and how that person got into the indsutry. Everyone tells that person "she's the lucky one" and then the next chrous with all the turmoil happening already, it changes into "can you tell me now you're the lucky one?" and the final chorus, from Taylor's perspective now, she tells that person "let me tell you now you're the lucky one" because the person managed to get out of the industry and live a peaceful life outside of it.

Loved your reaction! I'm so happy when people try to take in Taylor's lyrics and not just the music. The lucky one is about another musician (some people think it's Joni Mitchell but Taylor refuses to reveal who she wrote it about) who got really famous but after experiencing the dark side of fame chose to leave the limelight. "They say you bought a bunch of land somewhere, chose the rose garden over madison square and it took some time but I understand it now". So this person decided to live a private life somewhere (in a big garden) and not perform anymore (eg at madison square GARDEN, a world famous arena, nice little word play there) and now that Taylor is experiencing the trials and tribulations of fame herself, she understands that person's decision. Just like you this song is not my favourite musically, but I love the storytelling. Really reminds me of Taylor's new song the last great american dynasty in the way that in the verses she describes another person's life but then in the bridge she brings herself into the song and relates the other person's experiences to her own 😊

Going to the white house would make them even more famous. Plus has there ever been a musician that became a first lady? I'm not American so idk but I've never heard of that before. I think in this case rose garden is not a specific garden but rather a metaphor for a quiet, private life away from prying eyes, unlike madison square garden. Songs are obviously up for interpretation 😊 but the white house thing doesn't really fit here in my opinion
@vespastik4 жыл бұрын
Anna Lehneis maybe. Maybe it means going into politics? Shes juxtaposing two prominent places. I dont think the rose garden is a generic term in this song, but we all have our interpretations! Hopefully we’ll find more clues!!

I don't know why but when you had that realization that the guy she was talking about was a narcissist it remained me of that line in I Did Something Bad "I never trust a narcissist but they love me" I don't know if the lyrics are related but not gonna lie, it kind of blow me away.

The Lucky One is about a singer (they said it was about Joni Mitchell) that was once famous in the 60's (referenced in the first verse) who experienced the ups and downs of fame then decided later in life to leave the spotlight... Taylor later in the song expresses how she understands the singer's decisions as she is now experiencing the fame and success.

Fun fact about all too well: the original version of the song was 20+ minutes long but Taylor decided that she had to cut it bc she thought people wouldn’t listen to it and realized that most of the things in it were too personal. Later she said that lost the paper where the whole song was written and it should be anywhere in her room. Now the song became like a special thing for swifties and tay cause she said that hearing all the fans screaming the lyrics and loving it so much made her feel better about it and it doesn’t hurt so much now as it did before.

My favourite line of the whole album is "nothing safe is worth the drive" in treacherous. I also believe that the "I I I" alludes to a certain kind of coitus and that in all too well the lyrics "nights when you made me your own" and "it reminds you of innocence" are a reference to her losing her virginity as well? In a way this is her coming-of-age film in the form of an album?

The Lucky One is written in the same style as The Last Great American Dynasty, where she talks about the life of someone else and at the end of the song she wrote how the story of that person resonated with her. In TLO, she was telling a story of a person who was in the music industry who was being celebrated and was considered "Lucky" because of the lavish life. The person basically have everything already but of course it come with its challenges: She doesn't really build connections and personal relationships with those who "love" her. How people will eventually replace her with someone younger and more talented. How there is no private life when you're in the limelight. But these challenges are not seen in the public eye. This kind of challenge and pressure pushed this person to leave the fame behind and choose to live a quiet life instead and so the person disappeared from the industry. After some time, Taylor became famous and was working in the music industry and making it big. In the eye of the Masses, Taylor is considered "Lucky" because of the success she's experiencing. But the fame comes with the same challenges that the person she was talking about earlier in the song was experiencing. She was having a hard time with the problems and the difficulties that comes with the career. And so Taylor realized that the actual "Lucky" person in was the first person after all, not because she was famous but because she was able to get out of the system before the system destroys her. This is the reason that in the 3 choruses, the lucky one line was written as: 1. And they tell YOU now "youre the lucky one" 2. And they tell ME now "Youre the lucky one" 3. Let ME tell YOU now "Youre the lucky one" Its beautifully written IMO but I do get why youre not into it, its not the best produced song in the album.

Taylor samples certain lyrics in the Red song in her song Daylight from Lover (2019). That album is about her being in love with her long standing partner to show how this relationship altered her previous belief of love and relationships she had when she was younger. Its beautifully used and for fans,its a nice call back. I suggest you listen to it! Is the final track on that album. Also do you plan on listening/reviewing her other albums?

I'm really enjoying your analysis of albums. Most reaction channels focus more on the music and production instead of lyrics, which isn't a bad thing. But it's nice to have a more focused reaction to the songwriting. I'm looking forward to seeing what you do in the future

So I love all the songs and I have to comment on how you responded to the lucky one and you’re completely entitled to your opinion but the reason I love this song is for the line “they tell you that you’re lucky but you’re so confused. Cause you don’t feel pretty, you just feel used” which connects to me as a sexual abuse survivor. It just makes me sad for all the people who’ve had their bodies or their lives or their privacy or security violated and then had someone gaslight them and tell them how to feel about it. A lot of it is beyond even just celebrity, it reminds me of how our society gaslights women into saying they love or want something when they don’t

I feel like the car and traffic light metaphors in the songs are meant to be foreshadowing for the relationship ending in a symbolic "crash." not sure if that's me reaching, but she alludes to the inevitability of the relationship being doomed from the start in most of the songs, and that relationship also ended in disaster

This albums has a few escapist type songs to get past her break up. 22 is about having fun with your friends to forget about your ex. Stay stay stay is some silly fantasy of how she wished things went. Starlight is her idealizing the long lasting relationship of an elderly acquaintance. Holy Ground is about a relationship from a few years before the one on this album where she was eventually be able to be at peace with it ending (she's friendly with that ex now). Maybe she put it on this album because she's hoping this more recent breakup will resolve similarly.
