I worked out heavily before and during my pregnancy. It took me a solid year to get back in the groove, and my body never was exactly the same, but I like what I turned into. It also got me into lifting really heavy weights. Abby, your beautiful. Truly. Your man is lucky to have you and there’s a lot that goes into postpartum; both physically and mentally. Give it time. Giving birth to a baby is a rebirth for every woman.

It's difficult to be patient when you know you're unattractive to your SO ... aside from being unhappy with how out of shape / overweight you are.

But I think this conversation of losing your identity could reach much further than just after baby. I have pcos and experienced rapid weight gain and I really relate with this feeling and can really appreciate the conversation.

I think breastfeeding jumpstarts weight loss for sure after pregnancy. Also, my doctor told me I don’t have to binge on foods and said I only needed to eat about 300 calories more so, I just added another meal. I was 92lbs and gained to 130 with my first child. He was 8lbs. Took me about a year to lose all the weight. Second child was an entire new ballgame. I was extremely depressed, had less help, and was taking care of two kids instead of one. I didn’t have a lot of time for myself and with my second child I went back down to 90lbs and gained up to 132lbs. I went down to 98lbs in two months time and then kept losing weight during breastfeeding. I think I have an extremely fast metabolism, but was able to gain adequate amount of weight without having to eat a ton during pregnancy. I had to start weight training since being skinny for my entire life has had a negative effect on my bone density. So, my doctor encouraged me to prioritize strength training. Now, I’m 100lbs and lifting weights. Still skinny, always will be skinny due to my genetics, but hoping I can prevent further bone loss with weight training. Also, I eat 3200-3600 calories a day. I have to count calories because I’m so low in weight and this has helped with maintaining my weight at 100. I should mention I’m only 5’ 4” so not that tall before anyone freaks out about how low my weight is 😅

Nice video. Have to say it’s so true everything you just said- my first pregnancy was complicated and I couldn’t be active and it was very hard plus had postpartum depression- I did gain bunch of weight postpartum (did all the opposites of things you mentioned) and I was so focused on numbers on scale. After my second baby I am 11 months postpartum in great shape maybe one of best of my life had completely different mindset I do focus on how I feel and nutrients for my body(also was active during pregnancy which did influence my mental health tremendously) wanted to say I did needed to hear this with “scientific evidence” as a reassurance to know that I am doing the “right” way this time around.

Watched my 1st video of yours just a few moments ago (cable pull throughs) the video is 6 years old. I immediately played your most recent video and wow, compared to 6 years ago, your voice today has dropped a few octaves.

Fitness is always there but there’s only one time for the time you have with your baby right now! Thanks for that reminder! So easy for us mamas to put pressure on ourselves to “snap back” the thought can be so distracting from just enjoying the stage you’re in (which goes by fast)! I’m 7 weeks post partumn and what’s worked best for me is doing daily walks with my baby and when I can add on a 25 min workout! Makes me so proud knowing I’ve done intentional activity! Also when people ask what they can do for me I ask them to make a meal that I can us as prep through the week! Whether that’s a rotisserie chicken, rice, salad! It’s been so helpful! Good luck mama’s!

I’m 2 weeks PP and went for my first walk around the block with baby yesterday. I agree it is something we can actually be consistent with that’s low impact! Plus we both get fresh air

Thank you, I have been on a journey like you my whole life with fitness. I've just had my second baby, both which were c sections and I really want to loose the fat while not killing myself, my mental health and breatmilk production. This is the most educational and informational video I've watched in a long time. Thank you ❤

15 months PP and all I can say that was consistent about that first year is CHANGE! you're constantly changing, your routine, and your baby! The first 3 - 5 months when they're complete lumps on a log and sleep most of the time is a great opportunity to take time for rest, recovery and finding yourself again as you disembark from the Rollercoaster of hormones that is the 3rd and 4th trimester of pregnancy. Once they start sitting up and then transitioning into more mobility and longer wake periods, you have to readjust your routine. so, best place to start is to lay the foundation early. Get your head on straight and your body recooperated in the beginning so you aren't working in a deficit when you hit a 7 month sleep regression and want to get back into a regular fitness routine (ours lasted a month and absolutely detonated my exercise routine). This video was so nice to see Abby setting out attainable goals for the ever-fluctuating life of a new mom with the ultimate end goal of maintaining her physical and mental health! Its a chaotic blessing so try to enjoy the ride!

I just don’t know how I am ever going to find routine. My bub has been perpetually ill since birth (just getting past RSV now). We have been to the doctor 13 times since he was born 4 months ago and I am so struggling to find any routine. We are so blessed nothing has been a major illness, but I really wish we could get him totally well to establish a baseline. That combined with a full time job and breastfeeding I feel like I have completely lost any bodily autonomy. I absolutely love being a Mom and my son is the greatest gift I’ve ever gotten, but finding time to workout has not happened. I worked out 4-6 times a week before. :(

5 months pp, thank you so much for breaking this down! I was doing so well with my pp recovery journey, then the 4 month sleep regression hit, moved to a foreign country, got a stomach bug, now recovering from a bad cold 🫠 it’s amazing how little we realize the impact that sleep has on our diet!

Would be nice with follow up on how to regain strength and muscles as well as progress with 'cardio' PP, especially while breastfeeding. Really liked the short video on exercises to try out before going back to running again -but what about 'heavy lifting'? What is considered to be 'heavy' etc. When to switch it up from body weight to db/bb/kb weighs, what should it feel like during and after a workout eg. :)

Abby thank you so much for all of the research presented in such a digestible manner! I know sleep is important for weight loss but a ~20% increase in leptin & gherlin is shocking! I had no idea it was that much! No wonder new moms have such a hard time with weight loss! Time to take a nap 😅

I had a baby 1 year and 4 months ago and it is just in the past month that I finaly feel that I have gotten back the pre pregnancy connection to my core. I can acually do a whole pilates workout feeling engaged, supported and graceful, not like a soft cooked noodle swaying all over the place😅. I have only done at home pilates and have in the past month "upped my game" becuase she finaly sleeps through the night so I have more energy, and it is much easier to have a routine now when she is older. I did only long walks and lighter core exercises and some for the pelvic floor the first year for maybe 10-15 min. Walking was the one thing I could do and make time for since I could bring her along. I took walks with her daily while baby wearing and I still do everytime I go outside because she HATES the stroller, so we are stuck with the carrier. She is over 20 pounds now and I take her everyday with me for my daily walk and put her on my back like a backpack in a meh dai carrier, so that def build some muscle as well😅

Thanks a lot for this overview, Abby! I wonder how to add hormonal problems to the mix. I have hypothyroidism (diagnosed years before my pregnancy/pp) and I feel as if these equations just don't add up... Even with medication and taking care of my diet and exercise, I guess due to pp stress impacting my thyroid I have gained more weight since giving birth 😢

I have hypo too, it’s honestly SO HARD to lose weight when your metabolism is not working optimal. I feel like it takes me 10 times longer to lose 1 pound than when I wasn’t hypo, it’s so discouraging honestly 😔

i felt like the first 8 months or so of having a baby were not so difficult regarding my ability to work out and stay active. i lost a lot of weight when my daughter started growing and nursing more and more, around the 10 month mark i was almost too thin in my opinion. BUT THEN she started to crawl/walk and hated the stroller and then suddenly i found myself sitting around on playgrounds instead of taking endless walks. she wanted to be independent and didnt like the carrier either. i gained weight very quickly. at the same time nursing came to an end and i was finishing her purees to not dump so much uneaten food in the trash. i started working more and i relied more on sweets to get me through the day. now my toddler is 2,5 and it’s much better since she is in kindergarten and i have some time to exercise/take stairs or the bike when i‘m without her. but looking back, the time between 10-18 months was tough and i wish i had been prepared. i‘m slowly getting back to being fit finally!
