I think the main reason charizard doesn’t have dragon typing is because that would give it a resistance against water and upset the type triangle. Still wish it did though

So glad Torterra is S Tier it's my favorite final stage starter by far. Part of the reason for that in Chinese, Hindu, and some North American mythologies/beliefs of the cosmic or world-bearing turtle. Basically the idea that the earth is supported ok the back of a giant turtle or tortoise. Terry Pratchett used this idea in his Discworld series which I love. So part of the reason I love Torterra is how he seems to harken back to these myths by being a giant grass/ground turtle carrying the world (trees, grass, rock, etc.) on its back. Not sure if Nintendo intended that or not but that's how I like to think of it.

I think the weirdest thing about the low tier fire starters is that they never seem to logically follow from their previous forms. Charmander line is all variations on lizards, Cyndaquil line is all variations on like porcupine badgers, Torchic line is all chickens, Chimchar line is all monkeys. Then the Tepig line goes form being a cute lil pig to a wrestler. Fennekin goes from cute fox thing to oh no it's on two legs again please don't be fire/fighting again to BAM. Wizard. Litten goes from cute four legged cat to cute four legged cat and then suddenly BAM. Two legged wrestler. Why. I categorically refuse to evolve my Torracat whenever I play Sun and Moon. Incineroar is a travesty.

@@misters6749 Contrary Serperior kicks ass. Blazing fast, pretty bulky, and is easy to get rolling. Unfortunately, it's always hard-walled by something, as it has to choose an HP type to run. Typhlosion is significantly worse, though. People usually want to scarf or specs it, but that makes it ridiculously easy to switch into with zero consequence. It's pretty fast, but not quite fast enough, and it's rather frail, so being outsped or hit with strong priority means no more Eruption. Decent coverage, but lack of STAB and slightly above-average offenses means that it won't be doing enough to counters and checks

My favorite starter is Serperior by far. Snakes are cool, I love its snooty personality, and design wise it does exactly what it intended to do. After that is Greninja (cause its cool) and Empoleon (nostalgia). I didn't used to hate Charizard, but now I kinda do, and it's not cause he's over used. Its just... his neck and arms are so skinny! I cant unseen it! Just like Lugias weird hand wing things.

I'm so glad Swampert is S tier! Aside from the Pikachu I used in Yellow, Swampert was my first starter. And with hindsight, I realize that he's a lot better for gameplay than a lot of starters. I swept so many opponents with muddy water, surf, and earthquake.

I love Inteleon. The life path from shy to depressed to finally sleek and confident is just a really cool evolution line to me, and the final evolution just looks good. They really nailed the lizard look with its thin body and curled tail, and the intelligent... almost spy or sophisticate look they're going for really shines through.

Swampert, Torterra and Decidueye as they ought to be. 😁 I'm curious to see what you think of Braixen. While I'm not crazy about Delphox, it honestly looks way better than I expected and it makes sense that a little witch fox would turn into a big wizard fox. So it strikes me as funny when people who love Braixen complain about Delphox being bipedal or not being a kitsune. If you want a kitsune Pokémon, get yourself a Ninetales. If you want your bipedal fox to turn into a quadrupedal kitsune, just go play a Digimon game and digivolve your Renamon into Kyubimon. Problem solved. 😌

I agree with most of these rankings. I personally would've ranked infernape just behind venusaur (but blastoise behind venusaur). Typhlosian-H above regular typhlosian in my opinion. I really like primarina's design. I feel like its biggest sin is just being in the same generation as decidueye. Delphox is such a disappointment, fire/psychic had such great potential and instead we just get a triangle with a stick.

My main differences is that I have blaziken in A tier, Samurott in both forms in S tier (I know the design isn't super different between forms but I liked the base one a lot so this is just minor improvements to me), and Infernape to B tier

I feel like the rule with bipedal pokemon here is very similar to my own, is it either: 1. based on an animal that already stands up irl (like Empolean, Infernape) and thus makes sense to be bipedal? 2. just look like a regular animal trying to stand up? (Blastoise, Feraligatr) Blaziken despite being based on chickens that stand up on two legs *literally* looks like a human in form so it comes too far away from that animal design (tho I admittedly still think it's sick, it just doesn't look like a pokemon)

I think if they added attributes to pokemon games it would really make strategy complex, in a good way. Like it's hard to write code for Gengar to levitate to avoid ground moves, but coding for a levitate attribute would be interesting

omg... im s tier!!! but jokes aside, i started in oras and i picked mudkip not knowing what any on the starters were and when my Muddy evolved into a swampert, it immedietly became my favorite pokemon, and still is! when i got into competitive and learned swampert was actually really good, it made me WANT to play pokemon even more. ive won a few local tournaments with my swampert team and im so happy that my boy Muddy is getting the attention he deserves!!

Original Typhlosion will always be my favorite purely because of Gen 2 nostalgia, but its Hisuian form really is great on its own (and I still can't believe they showed it some love instead of Charizard for once). Primarina is up there too, it has a cool design and the best cry in the franchise. I want to say I like Delphox, but that's mostly because I've been playing a lot of romhacks and it looks a lot better in sprite form.

Empoleon and the entire Piplup line is probably my favorite starter line of all time- and honestly probably hands down my favorite pokémon of all time. FlygonHG I’m not gonna lie I agree with very few of these rankings lol. I only agree with Swampert, Empoleon, Venusaur, and Sceptile lol. For me S is Swampert, Charizard, Feraligtr, Infernape, Inceniroar, and Greninja. A is Empoleon, Decidueye (both H and A), Venusaur, H Samurott, H and J Typhlosion, Rillaboom, Primarina, and Blaziken. B is Torterra, Blastoise, Cinderace, Intellion, and Delphox. C is the Unova Starters, Meganium, and Chesnaught. No Starter is an F for me since they all have potential in their concepts it’s just the execution for me. For me the Johto Starters should have had Alolan Forms where Meganium was Grass/Fairy with Triage as it’s HA, Typhlosion was Fire/Ground with Drought as it’s HA, and Feraligtr was Water/Electric that shared the Zing Zap move with Togedemaru. Sceptile should have had a Secondary Typing. Torterra should have been Grass/Rock instead of Grass/Ground. The entire Unova Starters should have been different in design, Types, and Stat Spreads. Serperior should have been Grass/Dragon with access to a lot more Special Coverage including Draco Meteor, Samurott should have been a Water/Fighting Bipedal Pokemon with its Sp. Atk stat shifted into its Defensive stats and given access to Sacred Sword, and Emboar should have been a Quadrupedal Fire/Rock Type with Rock Head as it’s HA because it has natural access to Head Smash with its Sp. Atk stat shifted into its Speed making it a fast Physical monster with no recoil damage from massive STAB moves. As far as Kalos is concerned while Delphox and Greninja have minor design issues (Greninja should have had a bubble scarf not a tongue scarf and all the fur on Delphox is just weird while Braixen really isn’t) the major issue is Chesnuaght. Basically they should have looked at Quilladin and Chesnaught and just started from scratch because wow are those designs just that bad lol. As far as Alola goes I would basically leave Primarina alone and shift Decidueye’s SpDef into its Speed stat. Incineroar is it’s own kettle of fish. I’m a Pro Wrestling fan so the Heel Wrestler design was cool for me but it really didn’t line up with the Litten/Torracat motifs and so I understand the desire for it to match closer to its previous forms. Galar is ironically one of the Gens where only superficial changes need to be made. Add more yellow in its design with slightly less Soccer themes and slightly more Rabbit themes and add the Electric type and Cinderace is fixed, add the Ghost Type to Intellion to increase the connection to the Spy Theme and that’s fine, and give Rillaboom the Rock Type for the wordplay with a few Rock motifs into the Design with a shift of Drum Beating from Grass Type to Rock Type and Rillaboom would have been my favorite Starter off all time. As far as the Hisui ones goes it’s too recent for me to give an in depth criticism on them but I’m sure I’ll have something to say in a year or two. Same with the Scarlett/Violet Starters when we see the final Forms. So yea no F’s for me but quite a bit of gripes lol

I see the reasoning behind Emboar, and I have to say: taking away the golden swirl on his body would do a lot. I think he is C tho. Blaziken's more humanoid form I forgive as he is Fighting, and he still has talons instead of hand feet. He was also the first of his kind, and had a badass move set back then (Blaze Kick, Sky Uppercut), so he's easily A in my book. Inteleon, Incineroar and Delphox are F for me, they have so many humanoid features that they enter Uncanny Valley

For context, "the exception that proves the rule" is actually a saying that means the opposite of what people think it does - it's based on an archaic definition of "prove" as in to test something (like 'the proving grounds'), so an exception that proves the rule is something that counts as evidence AGAINST that rule.
