I'm on the fence on this one. It really depends on the relationship between coworkers. If it's a huge office and you only see that guy once in a while, asking for a favor is a bit weird, but if you spend a lot of time working together, I would feel weird charging a coworker for a favor. Now, no one is obligated to do anything for anyone, but a bit of kindness goes a long way. Today you help him move, tomorrow he helps you with something else.

I don't think shingles guy wanted free labor. I read it as "needing shingles w/o a markup and pay for actual job". I run into this shit constantly at a car mechanic where they will insist on purchasing parts refusing to use your own (kinda understandable for warranty and liability reasons) but then mark them up like 75%, which is a total shit deal.

As I understood, he/she was looking for a roofer to use his discount to buy shingles. Roofer is not paying for it, just lending his discount. And then he/she will pay for the labor for removing the old and installing the new ones. To me that sounds ok. Roofer is not loosing any money and is payed for the job. Store is happy with the purchase, customer is happy with the discount that roofer would normally get, and roofer is happy because he was payed for the job. Sort of a win/win/win situation.

Kind of a side note. I experienced choosing beggars in my life but what I'll never forget is this piece of an amazing community. Once I think either in 2020 or 2021 a guy in a small town in Sardinia lost his job. This poor man received news that his house was going to be taken away since he couldn't pay for it. If I remember correctly this man also had his small child living with him. The entire town's response was to each put a little money here and a little money there to pay back the entire mortgage since they well understood the man's pain. They showed him on the news looking shocked at his town's help. He seemed like the happiest human being on earth. And this is a true story. It's not fake if anyone wonders. Edit: I checked the news article and it happened in 2019 as the man lost his job at the age of 56 and had two kids.

0:50 not a choosing beggar, it is clear by their description that they have TRIED going to a food bank and it didn't work out. And, they have a point. Food banks in their current form are not an adequate solution to food insecurity. Many food banks are full of foods that are high in carbohydrates and salt and low in actual nutritional value. Things like boxed mac and cheese or dried mashed potatos or ramen noodles. even the more nutritous things that show up in food banks are not a sustainable food source and those are the peanut butters, rices, beef jerky and canned beans and soups. There is still way too much sodium in those to eat everyday on a regular basis. This is why you should donate money to food banks rather than canned goods or boxed meals. They can use that money to buy whatever food they actually need. The saying "beggars can't be choosers" when applied to people who are ACTUALLY in need of asssistance in getting their basic needs met is extremely damaging to those communities. It creates a culture where rather than asking these people or the organizations that help them what they need and helping them get it we are giving them stuff that they DON'T WANT and expecting them to say thank you. that is fucked up.

I've had to rely on food banks and soup kitchens. What they are able to distribute is what they get in donations. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the service, but when it comes to meeting dietary needs there's not much they can do. Rice, crackers, and various canned goods were the norm. Occasionally they would have milk, bacon, or some fruit but it's only because it was about to go bad.

The first post is a prime example of someone only thinking in terms of exchanging goods for money and completely disregarding the factor of the effort needed to attain said goods. You do the hard work yourself and _then_ charge people for the product you offer, or you offer the product for free in exchange that _they_ put in the work. Any other sales method is a scam. Then again, nothing short of "I want free stuff without any responsibility or effort that would compromise my luxurious cheapskate lifestyle" is good enough for people like these. Hell, some people even want _you_ to pay for _their_ inconvenience. They have no shame at all.
