Where i live,Malmö sweden,we have loads of really good skateparks, lots of the architecture being built is skater friendly, old skaters are now calling the shots in the city when it comes to building stuff. We have a high school (16-19 year olds) which has skateboarding on the schedule. Lots of older people skatibg here,im 50,and i never stopped just because we have such a good skate community, producing world class skaters etc. Last but not least, ill say 30+% is girls/women. Indoor/outdoor parks have girls/women skating wirh other girls, certain hours no boys allowed etc. Good luck and keep on keeping on

I've always been fascinated with skateboarding but I grew up in the hood where survival was the only option. I'm 28 and feeling the same. I moved to Budapest a month ago, and this city just wants me to cruise around. So I got my cruiser board (after 15 years of nothing) and it was an awesome feeling to stand on a board again. I failed after a kilometer, and got some bruises and some small sprains, so I need a few days for healing but I will get back on it, because I want to do it and it makes me feel good.

“Anyone who skates has to not care what other people think” This is great advice. I’m a new skater in my 30s and it felt awkward to be my age skating around the neighborhood like an infant trying to learn to walk. Eventually I stopped caring and didn’t let it kill the vibe.

It's funny, I can't find beginner skateboard videos aimed at 8 to 12 year olds. They all seem to be aimed at like 5 year olds or adults. 8- 12 year olds have a much different attitude and attention span. They don't listen as well and it takes special little exercises for them to work on. Any direction on good instructional videos aimed at how to teach 8 to 12 year olds would be appreciated.

Indeed there are little to no tutorials catered for older grown ups who are starting with this sport. I really like how you cover all the things we will encouter, sooner or later. I must say I get a lot of positive feedback from young kids to older skateboarders when I am in a skatepark. Skatelessons are helping me a lot too and I love the skatevibe during those evenings, full of adults who are learning to skateboard. It is great sport, enabling me to unwind like no other sport has ever done.

i gotta say, as someone who clicked on this video out of curiosity mostly because i’m a 30yr old who has been skating since i was 10, the part about skate culture and skate parks being very non judgemental and especially not bothering women who are skating or learning to skate is very true in my experience. i have very often seen women or younger girls learning to skate at my local parks and the only thing i have ever heard any of the guys who are regulars there say to them is something along the lines of “you should turn your head to follow your body when you try that” or “it helps if you keep your shoulders directly above your knees”. just useful advice they would give to anyone. skaters are very inclusive for the most part (there’s always some bad eggs, they get corrected quickly by everyone else though) and as long as you are putting in the effort and seriously trying to learn to skate and not just taking pictures at the park without actually skating, no one will say anything except encouraging or helpful words. skate culture is very unique in that there are very few gatekeepy types/attitudes. we want everyone to experience the joy of skating, and everyone is welcome to learn. the people who are experienced skaters are happy to pass on their knowledge and they all recognize that at one point they were in the exact same situation as the person learning and it brings them back to how amazing it felt when they landed their first kickflip or finally committed to a drop in for the first time. we want everyone to experience the joy we felt learning to skate and because of that, will never laugh at someone learning, and will always offer help if requested. we also recognize that it’s a very male dominated culture and in order to branch out from that we have to not be creepy weirdos to every woman at the park, so we just leave it alone, and treat women/girls at the skatepark the same as we would anyone else. never be afraid to go to your local park. i know it can seem intimidating but just be genuine. the only people skaters can’t stand are people attempting to use skate culture for aesthetic reasons without respecting the culture/people that created those aesthetic choices. skateboarding was invented by weirdo outcasts, to connect with other weirdo outcasts, and as a result, we never want to oust people from the scene without an extremely good reason.

If you didn't know this already, learning to ollie or do other tricks is way easier if you're on grass. The board won't shoot out from under you and grass is way more forgiving than pavement if/when you wipe out.

haha oh no lol. hey man yeah my son showed me how he does speed bumps , he lifts the front wheel going over them fast and jumps as the back wheel hits it and the back of the board bounces off the bump and he lands and keeps moving. I dont have the guts to try that but the "step down take weight off board foot" technique should help. another thing I dont like are the yellow bumpy things at every crosswalk, they will throw you off if you hit them too fast.

After a couple of seshs which I thoroughly enjoyed, I'm progressing exponentially and I love it! Also, I teach guitar and tell all my students that it does not matter when you start, (as a lot of people think they would have achieved more if they had started fresh out of nappies!) all that matters is your desire and drive to do it and you will achieve it. I'm going to prove this by becoming a competent skater, even though I have started in my fifties.

Here’s the biggest tip of all…. if you think something is too extreme for you/you’re not in the mood to take a risk and hurt yourself, DO NOT be afraid to slow down, jump off, and step around an obstacle. That one really deep crack in the sidewalk? If you feel like it’ll catch your wheel and make you fall or get hurt, Simply don’t ride over it. Screw what anybody else thinks. Dont let anybody question you about “ha you couldn’t ride over that?” You ride where and how you’re comfortable. If the pavement is too rough, and you think there are too many rocks, So be it. You can’t tide over everything. Learning that early is key to having minimal wipeouts. Hell yeah i get off my board to avoid steep hills (or just hills that put me at a speed im not comfortable riding at… thats steep to me, and thats what matters) SAFETY FIRST. You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do. Thats the safest thing you can do, is keep that in mind. You CAN SAY NO to anything you feel is too extreme. Flat ground or not. Theres no shame in acknowledging your limits.

"We just like to cruise" Amen to that man. That's kind of how I am with skiing now. When I was younger it was point the tips down the hill and go as fast as humanly possible, even amateur ski raced in my younger years and went down the hardest trails I could find. Now in my 30s with health insurance premiums being what they are...I just want to chill and cruise and take it all in without risking shredding a knee. We don't heal quite as fast anymore, lol. Great video man, hope you do more content like this as you have the perfect presentation style for it. I learned quite a bit, though not looking to take up skate boarding anytime soon, lol. As my friends say, at 6-4, anytime I get on a board or ice skates it's like a giraffe on ice, haha. Used to love roller blading as a kid, maybe I can get back into that some day.

@@Raychristofer I'm on the shorter end of almost 40, haha...not slowing down, but just being careful. Too many years of sports and cross country when I was younger kind of wore out the joints a bit so just have to take it easy. My problem now is from where I broke my ankles multiple times in college, broke just about every toe on both feet, lol...so now that I'm old when that tendinitis hits it can put me up for a few days, can't really do much hard running anymore. Just have to stick with activities I can go slow and sometimes have a beer or two.

Skier's use the term Elan' - to glide. The basic essence of all board sports is the glide.

I was browsing through a long list of longboarding/skateboarding tutorials without much success, until I found this, and it hit the nail on every aspect. The relatability, the voice, the delivery and the quality were all spot on. Sadly it appears he passed away a couple of years ago, and now I m getting emotional about a guy I barely just watched a tutorial of. Thanks for the great advice buddy, I shall slay this beast for you and thanks to you.
