Price/affordability is easily the biggest obstacle holding these back from becoming much more the norm over slab phones but there are still other drawbacks that at least in Google's case they have not solved yet that Sam does a good job of highlighting. The camera's are one obvious downside then you have the smaller battery even though it's less of a big deal as the cameras are. Also in this particular case you have some oddities like the really low placement for the wireless charging coil which hopefully is an oversight by Google and not intended.

Had the privilege of using the Pixel 9 Pro Fold pre-release and it's definitely my pick for a book-style foldable. For the reasons you cited... but also because you feel like an absolute baller using it, even moreso than with the Galaxy Z Fold 6.
@AmitMehtaBobbyАй бұрын
Pixel 9 pro fold is digital convergence at its best and in this age of digital reading and audio visual media consumption, this is the next logical upgrade from the slab phone and I am sure once a person uses P9PF, he/she is not going to go back to the slab phone, ever ... I saw a lot of comments about the Tensor chip - actually speed and benckmarks are like a wrong race we are running - a crude example is it is similar to a students getting high marks, but not gaining corresponding knowledge. What counts is smooth performance, AI features running smoothly (requires a lot of computing) and simultaneously the phone not getting heated, with optimum battery usage - P9PF excels in all the above - couple that will slow charging, which is definitely good for longer healthy battery life; if someone is investing a lot of money on this phone, its battery should also last long (not just software updates) and I am happy Google is not in a mad race for speed and benchmarks - heavy gamers, this phone is not for you, rest of the people - go for it; it will change the way you look at a phone, forever and in a good way !!!
@VladimirMizich29 күн бұрын
I'm glad you said "heavy gamers, this phone is not for you, rest of people - go for it". This sums it up nicely. But also, let me state the flip-coin of that statement. The P9PF is NOT for heavy users in general. I hate it when people say they are heavy users, or power users, and they just browse the web, watch videos, listen to music, and text. That is not heavy use. That is basic use, which you can do on any phone. There, I said it. It's just a fact. Heavy use is GAMING, and STREAMING. Heavy use is when you force the chipset of the smartphone to run high for several hours, and then be the judge if it fared well or not. Can it handle running at 80%+ for several hours and not overheat, and the battery not die? 1) Ever heard of streaming? No, not streaming videos (Netflix, AmazonVideo etc.). Streaming YOURSELF, recording yourself, video recording / streaming with the camera of the phone (KZbin Streaming, Twitch, etc.); The P9PF is not meant for that. It will die after a couple of hours, and it will get warm/overheat. If you need a flagship smartphone for streaming, for actual HEAVY use, pretty much all Streamers use either the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra or the 24 Ultra. Not out of preference, but for a reason. They might have an iPhone in their pocket for calls/payments etc, but they stream from the Samsung. With that thing you can stream 7-9 hours straight and it won't get warm. It is what it is. 2) Same goes for heavy gamers, which IS power use. You can load up a graphic intense game (Genshin Impact or something similar), and run it for 7-9 hours straight on a S23U/S24U. This Pixel can't do that. Just know what you're buying this smartphone for. Is it just your regular daily phone for basic use? Banking, Navigation, Music, watching videos, web browsing, mobile payments, NFC, messaging, calling, etc. Then yeah, it's fantastic! I would pick the P9PF as my daily driver any day over all iPhones, all Samsungs, all Huaweis, Oppos, Vivos, Xiaomis, etc. I really would. But if you need a smartphone for heavy use, the P9PF isn't it. Most people (in all countries) aren't heavy users though, and it's fine, my explanation here is irrelevant to them, so to them I can wholeheartedly recommend the P9PF. It's probably the best daily phone on the market right now. I just hate it when companies and influencers advertise or label something for "heavy use" when it's not. None of them open Genshin and play it for 10 hours. They just use basic functions and the phone lasts them "a day". Oh wow. Only 1 day? You know, that is actually a pretty bad metric for a heavy user. They should stop being misleading. The P9PF is a smartphone for basic use. The problem I personally have with any smartphone at that price range is if it's just for basic use, then is it really worth that much money?! Probably not. It is premium though. It looks and feels premium. The functionality just isn't worth the price that's being asked. Anyways, thanks for reading guys. edit: had some grammar mistakes

Sam if you watch some of the more notable reviews of last years Pixel Fold, many of the reviewers said the same thing as you about using it mostly closed cause that outside passport like display was so perfect in terms of the aspect ratio that many went on using that and rarely opened the device. This is what I suspect will happen with me and any foldable which is another reason buying one now at the the premium they go for over a standard 9 Pro/Pro XL makes no sense if I might go days without opening it.

I'm not a fan of of the side bezel hinge area either HOWEVER, I believe Google added that as a way to increase the inner display size. It's almost identical to the OnePlus Open. However, it has a larger inner display because of it while also making the outer display the same size as a Pixel 9.

Folding phones still feel like novelties. Sure, they are neat .. but the compromises made with all of them do not satisfy the features. In a way ... Microsofts dual screen (or other dual screen phones) were "better" in that respect .. but not nearly as flashy. By and large .. you are much better off buying a tablet and a phone separately. It is cheaper, both items are magnitudes more durable .. and you are likely getting much better items than any folding phone can aspire to. For the price of a pixel 9 pro fold .. i could get a tab s10 and a s24 ultra .. and the only thing i sacrifice is the 2 in 1 aspect. (if i need a tablet so badly .. carrying a phone + tablet in my bag is not exactly a sacrifice worth speaking of) In my opinion .. both, the hinge and the screen technology still need to mature to justify folding phones and the technological advancements in folding devices has not exactly made huge steps forward.

As someone that's used foldable for years, I can't agree with that.
@Alfadrottning86Ай бұрын
@@NovaRadio-il4wbReally? that genuinely surprises me. Whenever i see foldables for sale (Ebay or similar) they have delaminated screens or dead pixels in high stress areas. When you say .. "for years" do you mean one for 5 years or .. a new one every year. Because if you get the latest one each year, it kind of does not really count against my fears of foldables.
@NovaRadio-il4wbАй бұрын
@@Alfadrottning86 about 2 years yeah the fold 3 had bubbles but you could replace the film. They fixed that on newer versions. No dead pixels. I'm using pixel 9 pro fold this time around. Still find it useful to have a foldable it's interesting to observe because it's a normal phone size on front you do open it less which I think is a good thing

I've been widely hesitant to get a 9 Pro Fold. I absolutely fantasize on this phone, but i'm terrified of one thing people are reporting. The foldable screen seem to snap for no reason. You open it, hear a cracking noise, your foldable screen is dead. You just used it, you fold it back, you hear a cracking noise, and now you're 1200$ poorer. I've seen plenty of insurance company that would charge 39$ to replace a front screen, but for a foldable screen it's 400$ It's not as bad, but spontaneously loosing 400$ is bad... Now you're saying that even the back just spontaneously crack? Thank you i'll wait to see if Google offer a Foldable next year, anyway, their Next tensor chip was rumored of being a major step up even before their current chip was released... I'll wait!

50% of people manage to destroy the display of normal smartphones in 2 years. Are you still not buying a normal smartphone?
@VladimirMizich29 күн бұрын
2 years? How about 5 years. If you plan to buy a phone for $1800, I sure as hell would use it to the max. I'm still using my phone from 2018/2019. So a Pixel Fold for me would need to last about the same time. I on the other hand usually buy phones outright for the full price and then use them for 5 years, sometimes longer. I think I understand where you're coming from though. You probably get phones on a 2-year-cellular plan, which makes the purchase price way cheaper, and after 2 years, because the cellular plan is running to it's end, you replace your phone for a newer one on a new 2-year plan. No matter the approach, I think both our question is whether a foldable would last 2-5 years: problem with crease? opening mechanism getting wonky? dust/sand? bubbles? scratches? does it make sounds when opening? dead pixels? does something break? does the battery last? etc. It's unclear.

Once Google puts more options to utilize the screen better (Desktop Mode Connection, Multi tasking with floating apps or more than 2 apps at a time, optimizing more software to support a viewing mode for this form factor, etc.), I would say it would be worth the bang for buck. The cover screen being huge isn't a remote selling point when you can just get a slab phone for less. Their slab line release are excellent products, but with the software limitations, it makes the Pro Fold restricted IMO
