I think Hugo could learn how to acknowledge the other person and not be in such a hurry, as he speaks the most. She gets cut all the time quite abruptly. He could say an acknowledgement to her, such as ''yes'', ''ok'', ''exactly''. He could also ask her some questions as they are in her space. I am sure it is not intentional, he is just quite eager, but just to get it over to him if he sees this comment and to the lady who seems a bit frustrated when it happens.

QUESTION: at 18:03 you talk about a whole-cut, which I thought was a single piece of leather, stretched over a last and the sole attached. But in the shoe you’re holding I can see the seam up the back, is that really a whole cut? I hope so because I’ve suddenly got three pairs of shoes I didn’t know were whole-cut shoes. Please explain.
@SARTORIALTALKS
@SARTORIALTALKS 2 жыл бұрын
Good eye ! A whole cut can indeed have a seam -- in fact most do. Usually only skilled bespoke makers could produce a whole cut without a seam. My response remains relevant unless a high tech super bench made or automatic machine is invented to achieve the feat described. Cheers ! Sonya

Hugo and Sonya, first of all, thank you for your content and dedication. May I ask a question regarding the lining colour of shoes? Does the colour of the lining impact the formality or beauty of a shoe? For instance, could one have tan lining with black (formal) calfskin oxfords--or would that be considered informal and black shoes should only have black lining?
@SARTORIALTALKS

I just want to discuss what you define as an 'austerity brogue' at the start. Here in London people would simply define the first shoe as a 'plain cap toe oxford'. To be called a brogue, a shoe requires 'brogueing', that is to say holes. To achieve brogueing, it is necessary to do the holes/punches on an extra layer of leather (otherwise you have holes in your shoe), that is why it is often done on the cap toe: you have a first layer and a second added on which the holes are punched. This requires more leather to be used. To achieve this effect without using so much leather (as would be required in times of austerity) and obtain an - austerity brogue -, the punching, stitching and detailing is all done on the same layer, trying to recreate the look , but without the use of extra layers of leather and also calling the lining into play to match colour, so that the holes don't have different colour ! I hope you will consider this and perhaps obtain your thoughts.
@hugojacomet428
@hugojacomet428 6 жыл бұрын
Dear William, thanks for your comment and your question. Actually I made a little mistake in the video as I show a plain cap toe oxford (as you rightly said) and not an Austerity Brogue. An "Austerity Brogue" is a shoe with nothing but a wingtip pattern on the upper. No perforations, pinking, or medallions. So it's true that It’s technically not a Brogue as there are no perforations. This is why, I suppose, the word "Austerity" is used also (which means "extreme plainness and simplicity of style or appearance"). Very strange indeed I agree, Cheers ! Hugo
@WL-ld6dz
@WL-ld6dz 6 жыл бұрын
Dear Hugo, thanks for your kind reply and your points made. The word 'austerity' always reminds me of the 1920s depression and I've always thought perhaps that is when the design came about. All the best,

Sir, just because I do not have the funds to afford rather over valued shoes please do not assume that we/I are not educated to recognise the differences between types of shoes. I enjoy watching your videos but if you are trying to give advice on elegance and how to look classy please make sure your tie is properly done and not slap dash. I suggest you learn how to tie a double Windsor knot. I hope I have not caused offence.

Cheers Brian and no intention to disturb you with my tie as the Italian influence was quite strong at the time as we'd been living there for a while! Hugo

I'm very happy to say that teens (boys and girls) at Jenks High School, in Jenks, OK , have brought the Oxford shoe out of the 1900s. They are wearing Oxfords with boot cut jeans, and all manner of casual clothes, even shorts. I love their look. It makes guys and girls, alike, look so stylish but fun. I personally love Oxfords and own a few pair. It is fun to see people wear them on a daily basis. Good thing you are here to advise!

I'm female and I've started buying vintage,second hand shoes and boots. I would rather buy a properly made vintage shoe than a new shoe that is made to fall apart after a season. Womens shoes are dreadful!

Hi, great video! Please i would like to ask you which shoes are more formal, the plain whole cut or the plain cup toe?
@SARTORIALTALKS
@SARTORIALTALKS 2 жыл бұрын
Dear Jean, it's strictly a matter of taste (and colour) but as long as it is plain (no brogueing), I would say cap toe. Cheers, Hugo

I understand and RESPECT what he is saying about the Brogue "Holes". However, in my opinion, the Brogue has changed drastically and is seen as a FLOURISH to the shoe and creates a very undeniable & unmistakable "manly characteristic" with a FLOURISHING aspect that is MUCH more decorative and flashy than merely a plain piece of leather. The "dressed up" Brogue is anything but casual or "unmasculine."
@reneebarguen5850
@reneebarguen5850 2 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely right nevertheless it’s perforations in the brogue had a historical function and that was to repel the rain of England Nowadays it’s mostly done for aesthetic style of the shoe.

Hi Mike, Perceptions change over time as you note for sure, but the brogue started out as a countryside shoe originally. Best, Hugo

Interesting video about the history of the shoe but in Scotland we will wear brogues for formal wear if in Highland Dress or Tartan Trews. Brogue is Scottish Gaelic for shoe and is pronounced ‘broag’ with a hard R.

Many items of a man's wardrobe have their origins in British culture. However, even though there is very little or no reference at all to that point, the French couple's videos are interesting.
