I'm from South Korea where this car was designed and the Hyundai Accent is my favorite compact car available here. The Accent is used for driving school tests in Korea and is loved by those who want a fuel-efficient and low-priced car. I think it's a very good car for short distances and city driving. One thing to remember before you buy this car is that the Accent is designed to fit the narrow Korean roads and small Asian bodies. Of course, if you're a driver who likes to cross Texas every day at 75 mph driving a heavy three-ton Chevy pickup or SUV, you'll definitely hate this car. The smart way to choose a car is to buy one that fits your budget and circumstances. If you don't like small cars, buy another big and nice car. The important thing is not to choose a safe car, but to be a safe driver. For example, Japanese drivers drive small vans that are much more dangerous than this car. Interestingly, they rarely get into an accident.

A friend of mine is a very high paid attorney who specializes in automobile accident deaths. He's won hundreds of millions of dollars for his clients and knows everything about every possible statistic and how almost every car on the road is rated and built. We were talking about this very thing while I was down mediating a case in Austin Tx last week. He's basically "seen it all" and when I asked based on the accidents he's seen/studied what he considers a very safe car, he simply said "I've bought every one of my 4 children a Subaru Outback or Forester when they got their license"...'nuff said. Basically the Subies are built with an integral roll cage frame. If you look at them you'll notice the lack of a door frame. The window is "free". That's because in other cars, the door frame IS a part of the structure whereas the Subaru's are basically a "box" which needs no added structure on the door for strength. When you get into certain aspect accidents and the door is compromised...the entirety of the passenger compartment is greatly weakened. Not so in the Subaru's.

Well, yes. Souped up teenager cars get crashed all the time. That's why the Honda Civic is wrecked the most out of any car. They're cheap and easy to rice out. However, I'm a teenager who's an actual car enthusiast and I work on old American cars. I've never been in an accident, never gotten a ticket, never had any problems with driving and I drive 15k per year on some of the iciest road conditions in existence, especially this last winter. Are all teenagers bad drivers? No, not all. Only some.

I have a 2013 Hyundai Accent. I accidentally rear ended a lady probably only 5mph but my car had no damage and not a scratch and hers had minor paint chips. So I don't think the Hyundai Accent is necessarily dangerous, I think since it's a cheap, efficient car a lot of parents buy it as their kids first car and we all know how damn hard it is for teenagers to get off their freaking phones while driving. Just my two cents.

I have a 2008 Hyundai Accent hatchback. In 2011, I was at a stop light in the left lane, an old F-150 was crossing in front of me and turning left, it was raining, he fishtailed and smushed the front left corner of the car, did considerable damage, the costs were just shy if a total. I didn't have a scratch, the front end crumpled, none of the impact transfered to the passenger compartment. As far as I'm concerned that car's design certainly saved me from injury, may well yave saved my life. Hyundais are great cars. The body shop of the Hyundai dealership in Salem, OR rebuilt my car, did a fantastic job, I still have it, am getting ready to sell only because I now have a problem with my left leg that makes it unsafe for me to drive a clutch.
@Alfonsodag
@Alfonsodag 5 жыл бұрын
The key to safely drive a small car is to drive defensively. Always anticipate what could go wrong in any driving situation and be prepared. If another driver is acting erratically or aggressively, give them plenty of room. Some drivers are obviously intoxicated, adjust your position accordingly. On the highway, drive slightly faster than the slow drivers, but slower than the fast drivers, a substantial space can open up between these two groups and this space can be safer than the congested areas.

Scotty- I generally agree with most everything you say, though KIA and Hyundai have the most combined IIHS Safety Pick Plus ratings for 2019. Including my 2019 KIA Stinger and our KIA Sorento. As for the Cooper’s, your opinion didn’t match the crash test scores. You need to track those ratings and watch those IIHS crash test videos for each of the Hyundai and KIA vehicles prior to claiming they both make flimsy and unsafe cars. That’s just not true! Bottom line, both KIA and Hyundai are different companies than they were ten years ago. Otherwise, keep up the good work.

Statistics can lie and liers can quote statistics. The Hyundai and Kia stats are high regarding deaths because of how & who drives them. The deaths are mostly due to speed, poor driving, and alcohol consumption, and due the low cost of these cars (both new & used), these are favourite cars among the young set...teenagers and 20 year olds. The cars are cheap, sporty looking, and driven like sport cars, hence the likelyhood of being in an accident and being crushed by a big, heavy SUV. If you want to protect your children...buy them trucks or vans as their first car...much safer and they just might survive an accident and drive more safely. Scotty didn't mention this but the Honda Civic also falls into this category... too small, too sporty and driven too fast by teenagers.

Rios and Accents are driven a lot as rentals so miles are high - 30,000 miles a year. Your stats are based on percentage of registrations not deaths per miles driven. But Consumer Reports has long argued that 3000 pound sedans have better survival than lighter cars. I think IIHS has a similar position. Other than high miles from rentals, I think a lot of teenage drivers get these, usually 3 years or more older. Rios and Kias used to be flimsy but the 2018 platform update fixed that.

I guess as a rental I don't care, but I know what you mean by them not being all that safe or feeling all that safe, not to mention they are under powered. I mean they'll get you going on the highway but passing, especially in windy weather might be a challenge, plus I found you can get thrown around a bit if it's really windy out side. Not the same as driving a slightly heavier vehicle like a Focus or even a Chevy Cruize. I personally wouldn't buy a Versa, partially because it's a Nissan but also because they literally sound like a tin can when you close the doors, etc.

Love the mileage on my hyundai 1.6-liter gdi coupled to a 6 speed manual. I have a 107k on it at the moment we'll see how it lasts.

not the car that's the danger, it's the distracted driver, more than likely young since these are entry level cars

Those cars such as the Hyundai Accent could also have higher crash fatality numbers due to higher sales numbers but if you consider overall percentage of sales to fatalities it could be lower.

I drove a 2003 Hyundai Accent GLS for 4 years in Alaska. Very Friendly Economy Fuel. I sold it for $4500 and bought a 2012 Scion XD for $4000. Best car ever purchase for me. Solid bullet proof engine.😎💪

I have a 2007 Scion TC and has been very good to me over the past 6 or 7 years with hardly any problems. Is there any knowledge that I should know about them that I should know about? I almost have almost 138k miles on it and bought it at 93k. This is my first car and haven't bought another car yet.

They are mostly dangerous to local built car as they sale alot more. And by the way, my first ever girlfriend and her brother died in a car crash. Her brother was driving a Chrysler Newport sport 1971. For thoses who don't know, it was basically a land yacht. They were both decapitated by the hood (bonnet) in a frontal impact.

Right now, given the trouble I'm having with my Xterra, I'd give my soul for a Kia Soul -- bad safety rating or not. At least the bloody thing would run well enough to get into a wreck.

Manuel Garcia My Xterra sucked too! Well, it did take me across the country from Maine to California twice. But gas mileage sucked. As did the fact that the transmission was horrible! Don’t try to put in in reverse, unless you want to hear it grind like a mo fo!! I thought it was just the way my fiancé drove, but no...it did it to me too. And then, because of the way the engine is set up, it costs a small fortune to get the transmission looked at because they have to drop the engine(or, that is just what they told me because they could never fix that grind in the transmission!) Oh, can’t forget the air conditioner crapping out on me, over and over again. I feel for ya, man. Get out of it while you can!! That is my best advise for you! Resale value on it is $h!t, so make sure you make it SPOTLESS inside before you sell it!

I'm shocked!😱 My daughter had a serious crash in an 08 Scion. She rolled over, broke a nail but walked away. Another daughter had an 04 Chevy Aveo. That car was so light that a strong wind could have blew it over easily. Im surprise neither of those made the list.

there MAY BE a BIAS to Scotty's report. most the cars on this list are CHEAP (as in price) cars that parents buy for their TEENAGE KIDS. so are these cars in the TOP 5 because of the car themselves or because of who's driving them (teenagers) or is it a combination of both.

I think it’s the car plus the age range of the drivers. Those Hyundai’s and Kias are probably driven by lot of younger drivers who drive more recklessly statistically. My 2016 Kia Sedona minivan was the highest safety rated in its class, tying the Honda Odyssey. Hyundai group is one of the world’s largest steel manufacturing companies also. So Hyundai and Kia products use a lot of high-strength steel on their higher end models which helps a lot in crashes.

The Kia Rio actually addressed that problem with Steel reinforcements around the frame on the 2018 model and up.........at least that’s what all the KZbin video reviews are telling me.
