2 little corrections 1) writers are not corporate, they don't run everything through corporate, and they don't make the bad decisions that lead to bad CGI 2) a big reason the CGI is bad is due to the soft features I'm assuming corporate pushed onto the artists. This becomes very clear when you compare her to ruffalo. You can see the BIG difference is the amount of roughness on ruffalo's face, the beard, scars, etc. It adds this level of realness that you can't do with soft features.

I'm pretty sure in an earlier video Marcus mentioned that when judging a show he doesn't care that much about the writing quality. Even if I heard that wrong, wow does this video support that. Most people I know don't like this show because of the terrible screenplay and how it handles existing MCU characters and elements (Wong, Hulk, etc.), not because they hate women or because they simply wanted higher stakes. @SA_586 . Because he went from being an asshole, and selfish billionaire to a hero who tries to help people and ultimately sacrificed his life to save the world. (A very dynamical character indeed which shows struggle and development) I'm not saying being humble and polite (and very caring) are the only things that make characters likeable, you don't exactly have to make your characters polite all the time (cecil, but he's a pretty interesting character but he acknowledges that he's an asshole anyway) I applied those traits specifically to wonder woman, which were shown in a pretty believable way, but also because she's not cringy like other mcu chicks, and is not a perfect character who has no weakness, her weakness being of course caring for others, besides she's pretty badass too. My point is that she-hulk is a horrible example of how to write an empowering female character. (Same goes for Ray, but that's for shitty character development and being a pretty boring character too)

I do think the speed of them trying to churn out these projects is severely impacting the quality of the projects. Taking more time to streamline the stories and touch up cgi could bring up the quality a lot. I mostly just think the show fails at the "attorney at law" part. It never shows us Jen as a competent attorney getting the legal upper hand in a clever way or actually show us interesting court cases in this world. Like, none of her cases should've made it to trial. All of the major revelations would be discovered in pre-trial deposition and they'd all likely settle before ever going to trial. None of them were worth going in front of a judge for. The most interesting and engaging one was the divorce arbitration with the immortal man. The legal aspects were pretty poorly done all things considered for a superhero lawyer comedy series. I wasn't expecting law and order levels of realism, but maybe something closer to the legal chicanery of Better Call Saul at least.

I know we don't need all of that in our quirky marvel show. But if you keep telling me she's a capable and intelligent attorney capable of working high profile cases, then I do expect compelling opening and closing statements, loopholes and research, and legally challenging court cases. Not junk lawsuits that would be settled out long before a trial.

I have two problems with She-Hulk. In the comics, Jennifer Walters is legitimately a badass lawyer. She's REALLY good at practicing law. In the show, it just doesn't feel like that. She sort of gets lucky all time, rather than her victories coming from her skill. The other thing is that the show is feeding the trolls. I would love to see what this same team would have made, if they weren't focused on, in the words of Jessica Gao, "Trolling the trolls." It feels like letting this small minority of hopeless douchebags set the agenda. It doesn't feel like a victory to me. It feels like they let these losers determine the course of their show. I love Tatiana Maslany as Jennifer Walters. She was even more perfect for the character than I thought, and I was over the moon when she was cast. I do think the tone of the show is very faithful. The whimsey, the wall breaks, the taking the piss out of conventional narratives, that's all great. I just think they kind of missed an opportunity by focusing so much on a small number of hyper indignant dudes, instead of all the other stories about women's lives they could have been telling. Also, I really don't like how Jessica Gao admitted that none of them were any good at writing legal drama. I feel certain that there is no shortage of women writers and lawyers they could have brought in to help with that. I guess they wouldn't have to be women, but if I'm writing a show about female lawyer, I'm gonna be compelled to consult with female lawyers about their experiences.

I think the issue is being really good at practicing law can come off as boring. The way you evaluate if someone has skill in law is sitting through hours and hours of testimony. I don't know how they did it the comics but I would imagine it was over top and over exaggeration like how a lot of cop/lawyer shows are now a days. To me it's like asking is "Captain America a good soldier"? Well we don't really see him do the things that soldiers typically do. He sort of given command without any reason.

A lot of the other shows aren’t even shows they’re just chopped up movies with a bunch of extra fluff to fill in the 30 minute TV show quota. She-Hulk is more akin to the old animated cartoons where each episode has it’s own individual story & I can appreciate that.

This I picked up on as well. At first I didnt like the show because of this reason, I didnt feel connected to each story and I found it odd an MCU show didnt have an overarching story or plot points. In retrospective though, I actually thought She-Hulk was fine. Looking at it as it is and not as I expected it to be really helps. Also on that note, this show is not for everyone. I’m looking forward to season 2 edit: I WILL SAY THOUGH, some of the writing was really awful, especially in the earlier episodes. A lot of it came around, but this show deserves better writing for sure.

I think the show really needed to integrate the 4th wall breaking more regularly, then that ending would have been pitch perfect. It takes alot of inspo from Fleabag but the reason Fleabag works is the the 4th wall breaking happens almost all the time and ties into it's core theme and character arc. I remember last year when Disney's new cartoon, The Ghost and Molly McGee, was shown to be a musical comedy and people were asking the creator on Twitter when the show was gonna get "darker", when the whole point of the show was that it was supposed to be light-hearted. People were so conditioned to see shows like the Owl House and Amphibia, also on Disney, were more dramatic with higher stakes that they automatically assumed every show after would be the same, as if variety amongst programs isn't a thing. The fourth wall break ending was so jarring and random, but it weirdly worked for me, mostly because like the video said that I agree with-there was no real overarching villain like the rest of the marvel shows. People expected a big epic fight to break out because it’s normal for marvel movies and shows, so they forced one in the finale (where it didn’t belong). It wasn’t about the show being shitty with no build up, it was about the supposed expectation of writers bosses and the audience of a big climax when it’s not always necessary in lower stakes environments. One thing I will say, as someone who has not read the she hulk comics and went into this with just a blanket mind not caring for the comics, I was frustrated a lot. Whilst I agree with your reasonings in terms of arc and how it played out, it does have to be said, episode 3 completely ruins it. I was on board from episode 5 onwards and thought it got better till the finale which I just rolled my eyes cos I more or less knew a dunking was coming

She began trusting and in the final episode the trust was broken and because she was a bland generic character, she became paletteable for the viewer who experienced being led on for an ulterior motive relate. The subversion is my frustration. I get the meta commentary just fell flat though there were layers of that coming in episode 3.

she-hulk was kinda meh for me which is disappointing/frustrating because it has good bones. she-hulk is a fun character (and they got her right), tatiana maslany is a great actress, and "self-aware superhero lawyer episodic sitcom" is a fun idea. the execution just wasn't that good. it doesn't bother me because it's a terrible show, it bothers me because it could have been much better. also daredevil is my favorite superhero and I (like everyone else) loved the netflix show. that being said, I think they actually did a good job being true to the character (especially for a 1 episode supporting role) while also matching the tone of the show. I've seen a lot of people bring up the waid daredevil run (and you can totally tell between the people who have actually read it and the people who have just seen funny panels lol) and it's true that even though there are lighter versions of daredevil they don't just drop matt's angst and issues (mark waid has even straight up said his new chipper attitude in that run was a facade...the guy was just recently possessed by a demon, avoidance may actually be a better coping strategy at that point). it's a balance. BUT again, supporting character in one episode of a funny she-hulk show where the episodes aren't super long or anything. OF COURSE he's going to match the tone of the show and they're not going to get into all of his issues. all the people who expected him to be angsty and brooding or for the show to dedicate time to his crap are giant idiots. they did daredevil totally fine (and pretty damn faithful to the daredevil of the waid run tbh), it obviously wasn't going to have the same tone as the daredevil show (but even then he still made jokes and stuff). stop complaining. also while I can appreciate them using the the yellow suit for one episode (plus it's kinda cute because it's his first time in the suit in the greater mcu), I never want to see it ever again. the yellow is just not working lol. but they gave him back his billy club with the cord which makes me happy, because him fighting with it is super dope. and I liked the little homages to the daredevil show like the hallway fight or them including the daredevil theme,

The only thing I disliked about the show was how they handled her getting her powers, mostly because I think having some of Bruce's blood smeared on an open wound is significantly goofier than a full-blown blood transfusion. But it also would have been more fun if she had a more challenging time managing her powers, like having her accidental Hulk out or having an episode where she can't turn it off, just showing more of the practical challenges of being a Hulk.

I think the problem that people had with She-Hulk always stems from that one scene where she blatantly puts down Bruce and says she has things tougher than him while he's trying to help her. That scene made Jen look selfish and mean-spirited.

She was comparing the level of control she has over her emotions/transformation based on the level of control she's had to maintain her entire adult life vs what Bruce would have had to do in the same circumstances (Hulk-issues aside). I also don't think MCU Hulk actually went through that trauma involving his father since it never actually came up. Ang Lee's standalone Hulk did, but the only mention of Bruce's father in the MCU was him missing his father's funeral because of Ross and I think some reference to them being estranged. MCU treated Hulk as a separate entity entirely (to the point that he holds a conversation with Hulk in Infinity War) rather than the disassociated personality he had developed as a child. Even if he did have the father problems, part of Jennifer's close relationship with Bruce in comics is that she helped him deal with it when they were growing up so I doubt she'd be referring to that directly.

I thought the show was pretty middling until that retreat episode. I think the reason people say her character doesn't really develop is because she kinda doesn't begin her development in earnest until that episode. Consequently, that one was one of my favorites, and the show felt a lot more solid after that. Otherwise, yeah, you hit every other nail on the head here. In fact, I don't know if I'd even go as far as saying the finale was too sudden. I see where you're coming from, but I thought it worked alright. The biggest takeaway is that regardless of what you feel about the writing, Tatiana is a very charismatic and fun actress, and she played the character very very well. I'd love to see her in future projects interacting with other characters, especially Deadpool.

yeah as someone with high levels of empathy, even when I cant relate to her character I could still UNDERSTAND her thought process. like when she got mad at bruce she wasn't feeling entitled, she was mad because bruce basically tried forcing her to give up being a lawyer to become a superhero. you cant just expect people to give up their passion out of the blue like that and not expect them to be mad. I also really appreciated her character flaws like her hating men but also being insecure about her looks actually MAKES SENSE and a lot of men and women go through that in real life. the reason she hates men isn't because she thinks she's better than them, its because she HAS to believe she is for her to feel respected and strong which leads to DEEPLY repressed sexual urges which is why she's constantly falling for hot men but when they eventually reject her(because she's not really that attractive) she feels EVEN more insecure because it ruins the belief that she is "strong and dont need no man" BUT when she finally confronts those feelings with men that actually empathize with her she becomes less reliant on needing to feel superior which in turn makes her hate men LESS which was the REAL season finale when she calls todd "babe" in a attempt to provoke him and show him she can finally control her anger/insecurities. edit: also thats most likely why we see she-hulk wearing a skirt at the last episode instead of pants

I dont even have a big problem with nothing happening, but if that nothing is consistently "man bad" coupled with drinking or bad lawyering scenes, it just gets exhausting. I personally accepted that its not a "superhero show", but they kept putting in plot points regarding superhero stuff, so I thought okay, she's still gonna have to deal with it, but I guess its gonna be condensed or solved through law, but no, they bait until the finale, only to make everything about it senseless, to serve their "this is bad" narrative, now again, I would be fine with it, if the whole show wasnt already filled with interesting themes that got ignored or badly executed and a plethora of guns that were never intended to be fired. Her treatment of Bruce with her sexist reasoning was also never adressed or resolved and her anger outbursts were just waved away with a "it was justified and in the end not even that bad anyways". If the second season decides to build on that, nice, but that would still make this the bad first season of a show with potential.
