Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN ART Review - Not What I Expected

I will say that I have 2 issues with this lens, at least with my copy of the lens. 1: I also notice a front-focusing issue, especially with Eye-AF; 2: specs of dust somehow now appear inside the front element of the lens, which is weird because I haven't shot in any dusty environments. Contemplating returning/exchanging for another copy. Other than that though, it's a superb lens! EDITED: I decided that returning or exchanging it wasn't worth the hastle, so I just disassembled the front element and cleaned it myself. It was actually very easy to do.

I have tested a copy in Spain with an APSC 6500 cámara and the sigma was much better than the Sony 1655 2.8 in contrast same sharpness, much better bokeh, as good bokeh as trio sigma. No problem at all with focus. So it is your copy, return it back. The problem of this lens is the size and weight.

@@CurroBlanquer We all know there are good copies. We know now there are also bad ones...and that those cannot be easily repaired. I've ordered mine in a shop where "returns" are not as easy as it would have been with internet stores. So just knowing that there are bad copies is enough to make me regret my pre order. I will try to cancel it.

I've had my Sigma 24-70mm for a couple months and as I showed in my review the AF seems to work well even though I'm a Panasonic guy lol. Good review!

After watching this video I was tempted to cancel my order of the sigma. But when it came I put it up against my Sony 24mm and my Tammy 17-24. At 24. I was quite pleased with the results. The Sony was a little sharper at the corners but nothing much. Focus test was good. All in all I had nothing of what your lens had I’m pleased to say

As for the lens, it’s usually best to wait before buying anything BRAND NEW from the ground up. My dad told me this years ago, based on his experience with a couple of vehicles. Keep on truckin!

It's a bummer to get a bad copy. I tested my copy at the store before buying. It's the first zoom I find can hold up against the A7r IV. Very sharp and without CA. It's soo much better than the Tamron 28-75 I traded in.

I find it harder to believe they’d pull random units off the assembly line for their “provided” demos, versus selecting units that QC’s tolerance checks show to be ideal. So maybe the reviewer is honest but it doesn’t mean their video is trustworthy. I’m also suspect of the shipping industry. Some routes, hubs, and random handling mishaps probably mean widely varying results for the end users even if the products were all perfect leaving the factory.

I bought this after hearing good things about the video autofocus since I want to make some gimbal videos. But there are situations where this thing just won't focus. Far to near often takes a very long time (shot unusable) and sometimes it just sits there and never focuses till I press the button. Then it will usually kick in. But if it knows what to do when I press the button, why wouldn't it do that automatically? Am I missing something? I haven't filmed a full movie with it yet, but I did try to film some DIY stuff on a tripod and had to throw much of it out because it was all blurry. That's partly my fault since I left it on 2.8 (switching from crop and didn't realize how much DOF there is on FF at the same aperture) but still. I just want it to work and wonder if there's something I'm doing wrong.

My Sigma 24-70 lacked sharpness in the corners and the left side of the image was fairly blurry once I tested it (70mm f/2.8) I sent it back to the retailer for testing (no stock for replacement right now). Can provide sample images if anyone wants. Waiting to hear back from them... I'm hoping it was just a bad copy. I emailed Sigma but did not receive a reply.

I got a copy of this lens last week. I did some shooting over the weekend, and I’m noticing an issue with eye focus. Not sure what it is, but the images overall look soft. I don’t know if it’s me, the lens, or something else altogether. I’ll be doing further testing this week and over the weekend, to find out what my next steps will be.

Ibrahim Salawu I kept the lens, and I’ve used it quite a bit since the post. I went on a trip to Puerto Rico, and had no issues with the lens. So I think maybe I didn’t have my settings dialed in correctly in camera at the beginning, because I’ve had no issues with the lens since then.

Nobody seemed to realise that, but i have done my own tests, the sigma is not a real 24 - 70, but a 24 - 66 mm, when you compare to others 70 mm. mine have also little CA begining at 50mm, and its not good at "66"mm ( 70mm on the lens ) ... shame. It is a noticeable difference with Tamron 28 - 75, yes you loose 4 mm wide, but you gain 9 mm for portraits etc..., and the lens have less CA and sharper on the center.

Your review is good anyways, it’s important to address bad copies as much as good copies (look for example the zeiss 35mm 1.4...its like a lottery picking up a good copy) From what I see and I understand(out of 8-9 reviews) the lens is actually better than tamron and really close if not better than the GM, still not as perfect as the Nikon 24-70 but for Fe mount sigma is the way to go. However I didn’t see anyone highlighting the massive field curvature of this lens, which is not an issue itself but if used at f 2.8 it might look not as sharp, or at least the focus is not a straight line from center to corner. But once you know your gear, you can avoid its weaknesses. Close up shots, is not as sharp as tamron, but at least it does offer such capabilities compared to the GM. However when it comes to landscape and object beyond 2-3 mtrs, the sigma really shines, the sharpness is even superior to the beautiful Nikon 24-70.

Agreed. He's really only looking at the close focusing performance, wide open, where the Tamron's increased focal length gives it an inherent advantage. Plus, he clearly got a bad copy. Seems honest? And he's Canadian. But when one review is such an outlier compared to very trusted other sources... Well... You shouldn't let this one review affect your purchasing decision, imho.

Tan Zheng Heng every lens has issues I think, you can also argue tamron starting from 28mm might be a major issue for a lot of photography. It’s more about the best compromise I guess. Is that soft the lens at close up shots ? Or is more missed focus due to the distortion ? Depends also how close you are, maybe try to step back few centimeters.

Yeah, that happened to mine too. I was thinking of going through the hassle of sending it in to Sigma but realized it's probably not worth the hassle...so I just disassembled the front element and cleaned it myself, which was a lot easier than I thought it would be.

I'm sure it would void the warranty as the metals and plastics on the lens tend to scuff easily. If dust happens to get deeper inside the lens, then I'll have to weigh my options.

I pretty much got the same issue.. Heavy CA though sharpness and autofocus seem good. Also awaiting answer from Sigma on some photos I sent them. Will send it back and hope for a better one once in stock again

The lock switch is not unnecessary by any means. You can lock your lens when you dont need it and dont need to think about unlocking it when you use it again. It's a super convenient little thing they added to an amazing lens. Not a big fan of this review tbh.

I have the new Sigma 14-24 f2.8 which is considerably more money than the 24-70. The 14-24 is an amazing lens. When I saw the 24-70 at such a reasonable price I wondering if they might have cut some corners to compete with the Tamron price. After your review I’m thinking that may be the case. The other possibility is this lens is selling so well and they are backordered to the point they are letting QC go out the window. I’m a big Sigma fan and this is very concerning.

I have seen a lot of people facing this issue with dust (just after a month or two). I really wanted to buy the Sigma but after reading those I want to go for Tamron. I just tested mine for longitudinal chromatic aberration on book print 24mm, 48mm and 70mm, wide open, with all the inbody corrections off. Mine is good, better than I was expecting actually. Will do the brick wall test soon. I haven't noticed any unexpected problems, distortion is pretty noteworthy, but that was expected. So looks like you might have been unlucky?

I Was thinking of buying this lens after my local camera shop let me borrow it for a few hours today but after reading reviews it has a major problem with dust getting into optics. Sorry sigma but 1000 pounds for a lens that collects dust is no good too me. Think I will go with the new tamron 28-75mm f2.8

You must return that lens and pre-order the Sigma 70-200. After this I don't dare to order that lens before you've reviewed it. But the Tamron 70-180 is out first. Please review that with filters, as some people say 67 mm will cause extra vignetting with filters on it. Please check this out:-) Some people even think Sony will announce an updated 70-200 soon. What's your thoughts on that?

One thing to note is that Tamron has direct connection with Sony as Sony has 12% ownership in Tamron. So maybe Tamron has some access to Sony secret sauce or firmware which sigma doesn't. Also Tamron lens firmware can be upgrades via the camera, for the same reason. Not sure about sigma.

Thanks for doing the tests, but given your test results, I don't understand how you can give it 4 stars. The test results are terrible, and for the price, I'd say it deserves 2 stars if I'm generous. I wouldn't keep your copy of that lens for any price.

Hopefully it's an anomaly. Gerald Undone seemed to have gotten a great copy. I'm using the Tamron and am considering switching if it performs as well as the Tamron that I love just for the extra 4mm on the wide side.

I had the Tamron for 3 years. Did tons of events with it. It’s ok. Definitely sharp but I think it’s meh. It’s nothing special but it does do the job for my paid shoots. I just got bored Of it. Plus I want a 24-70. I traded it in and now looking at this Sigma. This is first review where someone wasnt impress. Honestly I’d use my Batis lenses 25mm for events if I had 2 full frame cameras

I have the Sony GM and after much testing the 24 and 50-70mm end are damn soft. I would not recommend it. I actually recommend trying the sigma (with wend back if bad copy) more.

I had same problem before with C line bought 56mm f1.4 and 30mm f1.4 then sale my brand new 56mm next day of buying and when i was purchase 30mm i see the same problem again in the shop at lens test and then open the another box 30mm f1.4 and the second 30mm was sharp and crisp and i purchased it but for me was big good bye to sigma

Stephan was right to do the review as Sigma sent it back after controlling it. It means that for SIGMA, the lens was perfectly compliant with their quality standards.

I bought this and just shot with it for the first time shooting on a brand new a7r3 (also first time shooting). I agree 💯 with the cons. I had the same issues. I self shoot and I missed so many pictures I’m heart broken. I had sigmas in my old Nikon d750 and they were stellar. I bought on amazon and returning. I’d tried the tamron on my a6400 and it never missed focus 🤷🏻‍♀️ it does have a glassy look to it tho but nothing that can’t be fixed in post. Thanks for clearing my mind 🙏
