Better Than Yesterday

Better Than Yesterday

Күн бұрын

Do you know someone who can strike up a conversation with everybody they meet? Their conversations look effortless, they often get free drinks at the bar, and they make best friends any time they go out.
How do these people do it? Are they some type of social mutants? Or are they just “naturals” when it comes to talking to people?
They may be gifted, but they don’t have some coveted secret. Instead, they’ve just mastered the art of small talk.
Small talk is the base of a conversation.
Never forget conversation is a ladder and you can't just leap-frog up the conversation. You need small talk to climb the ladder and warm people up with it.
A few examples how to transform closed-ended questions to open-ended:
Would you like vanilla ice cream?
What is your favorite flavor of ice cream and why?
When is your birthday?
When is your birthday and how do you like to celebrate?
Where did you go to college?
What do you feel was most beneficial about your college experience?

You forgot one crucial, make sure you look OK. Most people whether they like to admit it or not judge a book by its cover. If they don't like the cover, then there'll be no reply or any conversion will be cut short. You could try wearing something that can be a conversation starter or by carrying something that's in vogue ,like the latest popular mobile phone.

Right, and make sure not to make small talk with strangers when you know you're not gonna see each other again. It doesn't make sense. Small talk should only be happening when meeting people for the first time like family and co workers, or if you're trying to get to know people. Outside of that, small talk has no significant purpose. Customer: we're here from San Diego. That's my mother and my sister. Cashier: oh Their not gonna see each other again. So what's the point in making that irrelevant small talk. The cashier don't care anyway. What exactly is he suppose to do with that information. What is he getting out of it now that he knows their from San Diego Second scenario: Customer: we're from Houston. We stay at the Marriott hotel around the corner. We're leaving next Friday morning. Cashier: oh, okay Again, more irrelevant babble. Just pay for the food and drinks and then get the stepping. It's that simple. I don't know what I hate more, listening to small talk or engaging in small talk. 3rd scenario: Cashier: what school do you go to Customer: city college. I been going for 2 years. Cashier: oh Customer: your son is in college, right? Cashier: yeah, he's in his 3rd year. My daughter is in her first year. Customer: when I graduate I'm gonna visit Bora Bora Cashier: oh, very good Customer: yeah Cashier: ok, bye bye, good night Customer: good night, bye. Once again, more useless babble. Small talk is stupid. At times it's necessary but for the most part, it's stupid.

@@Chris-nn3vu are u sure Chris? As far as I understood it’s just a processing disorder. But if a processing disorder affects learning more or socializing, depends on the individual. Some of my autistic students are much more impaired in learning (Asperger guy in my class has an IQ between 74 and 79) than in socializing (he is able to even speak diplomatically about things that bother him).

Of course not. I'd suggest to be open and honest. If you did nothing that day, just give them an honest answer and say you didn't do anything, because maybe you felt tired or felt like being lazy. Most people can relate to that. No need to make up stuff or do pointless things just to get the conversation rolling.
