Big Daddy Kane is the GOAT! Dancing was a big part of certain rap acts that wanted more of an entertaining stage show, as opposed to just rapping and the DJ playing the instrumentals. Groups or duos like Heavy D and The Boyz, Kid N' Play, were two others, of the great Hip Hop acts, that showed a style of rhyme and dance to give you an electric performance and got everyone on the dance floor. BDK was influenced by the stage shows from the likes of Marvin Gaye, James Brown... Pink Floyd, even! You also might be referring to Kane appearing in either Biz Markie's 'The Vapors' or Slick Rick's 'Teenage Love' as he was a subject as a character, in both of those artists' songs, and appeared in both of their respective, videos. Side note: Kane (nowadays; pre-pandemic) is still a monster performer, live, with a full on stage show that STILL incorporates a dancer here and there as well as himself. He's the ultimate showman when it comes to a live stage act... and also... a real, genuine and cool brother that I've had the honor of meeting and knowing (for myself, idolizing him as a kid that grew up in the same borough of Brooklyn as him, it's still surreal, ha). He's super, down to earth and as cool as you see him in these videos. Thanks for the reaction vids, guys, keep it comin'! 🤘🏽

- This came out in 1989.... - This song sample Mary Jane Girls - "All Night Long", which is a group produced by Rick James - Big Daddy Kane is argued as one of the greatests of all time hip-hop artists - Yes, that was Chris Rock

Hip hop music started as party music so dancing was always a part of it. Kane said he was in part inspired by James Brown. Having dancers and doing some steps with them made for more of a show than a guy just standing there rapping with his DJ.

At the 4:00 mark (of this video) Kane kisses the hand of a girl, standing next to her is Al B. Sure! The main melody of the song is a Mary Jane Girls sample (All Night Long) but the breakdown in the middle is a sample of 'Do Your Thing' by Isaac Hayes (from the Shaft soundtrack) with a snippet of Marvin Gaye saying "operate" from his song Sexual Healing.

Glad you guys did a reaction to this . I actually forgot Chris Rock was had a spot in this video. Kane actually had two guest spots in this video. The guy smiling with the girl who's hand Kane kisses, is Al B. Sure. Al was just blowing up as an R&B artist, he became one of the best from late 80s to mid 90s. He's featured singing in Heavy D's song and video "Somebody Fo Me". You guys would REALLY love that.

You asked some really good questions. Ill try to address a few to the best of my ability. These artists are all pretty much gen x. So overall pretty much the last generation og knowledge of very strong family and continuity with their elders especially culturally. It was all kinda smashed and broken very quickly when crack and money and guns flowed into poor neighborhoods in a very short period of time. So the music and the dancing were escaped from an unbelievably violent environment. Dancing without embarrassment is something people older than you encourage you to do similar to sport but it's not organized. This was a competitive safe space. So the rapperd, the dancers and the DJ's battled for primacy. That's why they were so good and so unique. They knew their voice. So as the generations lost continuity the younger lost their encouragement and their connection to the music. So we have a generation of kids put on by producers who create the themes centered around posture and material. The craft is not honed. Strip club culture went mainstream. No one serms to much care for community wwll being or lines of decorum. Furthermore, the people from American slavery are unique in that they are a creation of this country and are the builders of it and in large part the drivets of it. They are the light that the world follows.

Theres still tons of dancing there are new dance trends constantly coming out like the dab for example..if you want to see a modern dance crew i would advise watching either a les twins video or jabbawockeez there really entertaining even though dance just like hiphop has evovled and taken many forms..bt BDK didnt neccesarilly need to have a dance crew everyone would just dance one of the things in a hiphop party is not being shy and dancing ..hiphop started as rap, dance, and grafitti , dj ...those were the 4 elements..and there all still very alive today in many forms..

Back then it was TRUE HIP HOP! There is technically 5 elements of hip hop, emceeing (the rappers), deejaying, breaking (dance over break beats), graffiti and beatboxing. Most crews incorporated most of these elements back then, even if you never saw them. People perfected what they were passionate about back then. Today is a crap show. Not true hip hop...

Rap started in block parties, MCs were to support the DJs. DJs was the show. Rappers became the show and it was still for the parties. Hip Hop consists of DJing, MCing, Graffiti and Breakdancing. Today, mainstream rap music is a product for bug business, record labels sell rap music NOT hip hop.

He was great, wasn't on top as long as he should have been. He was maybe a little ahead of his time with his skills. Alot of rappers took pride in being good dancers in that late 80s early 90s era. Even Diddy and 2Pac were dancers early in their careers. Yes, guys eventually got too macho to dance, dancing went out of style as the 90s progressed, MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice were seen as overkill and watering it down, so things trended away from dancing. On the brightside, artists with 2 left feet but musical talent were then able to rise to the surface more. Acts from that era that are still doing shows, however, including Big Daddy Kane, still take pride in their dancing and try to incorporate it into their live performances. There's video on here somewhere of BDK dancing and doing a split at a show in his late 30s or 40s!

Hilarious hypothetical asking your friends to dance scenario. Guy dancing stopped after Hammer because people thought he took it too far. Ice Cube even has a diss about that in an old song. So once gangster emerged guy dance routines were no longer acceptable, but it was ingrained culture up to that point. Remember we're a rhythmic people at our core.

"nowdays it's mostly the girls who dance" Strange because Bboying/Breakdance is mostly done by males at a level never before seen, same for the stand up Hip Hop Dance dance. Females are doing great but sadly they only represent a tiny minority at the highest level of Hip Hop dance and Breakdance.

I'm feeling like I have to wait too long for another video. Quit your jobs start a patreon and let's get this train moving. As far as BDK ,he was one of the few, maybe the only hard core guy that got away with a few dance steps.everyone else like Kwame,Kid N Play, or MC Hammer were considered more soft core dance rapp.No street cred. Would really love for you 2 to react to The Pharcyde. Videos "Drop" or "Passing me by" great videos or The Alkaholiks videos "Damn" or next level. So far you guys been talking some of the OK stuff.
