The original was a hardcore rant on Scandinavian politeness and passivity. I am going to watch this remake, but I am a bit unsure how those aspects will translate. For one thing, Americans aren't afraid to say "fuck no" if necessary.

I feel like thats the point of this remake, a lot of people think this is blumhouses cash grab idea of taking an international film and turning it into english but since most of the original is already in english i think this is going to say different things both in theme and tone.

@@dusthymn8187a huge factor in the original was the fact that the two couples didn't always understand eachother. Making a completely English remake makes no sense. They should've made the antagonists Irish so they could both speak English and Gaelic or something

Yeah… and that’s why I don’t feel like this can work at all. Making this into a family fighting off a bunch of crazed fucks reeks of the absolutely worst tendencies of Holywood to make everything a semi-action flick in the 3rd act. I really hope they won’t get the idea to remake “When Evil Lurks” now… because there is no way they wouldn’t fuck it up.

I found both the original and the remake enjoyable for different reasons. The original film is more rooted in reality, making it possible to somewhat understand the passive father's decisions and to consider when one might leave if faced with the same situation. In the remake, James McAvoy delivers an absolutely terrifying performance, and Aisling Franciosi is also convincing, she was awesome in the movie Stopmotion earlier this year.

If a band makes a cover, do you want a carbon copy of the original, or do you want a different take? I watched it blind, without seeing the trailer or the original. On its own terms, it is a great movie. I was uncomfortable the entire time James McAvoy was on screen, and judging by the reactions of people in my screening, I wasn't alone. It is two hours of Alfred Hitchcock's famous bomb analogy. I watched the original later. I wouldn't call the remake "cleansed." Sure, the original has a bleaker ending, but to me, the remake is tenser because the couple finds out the host's intentions earlier, and James McAvoy was terrifying as the main antagonist. Watch it without expecting to see the same movie, and you will like it.

I think this is an oversimplification. If you know the director, you know they are not one to "cave" (I refer you to Eden Lake). I think they went another direction, very consciously, to better explore themes they felt weren't explored in the original.

Matt Reeves Let the Right One In was a damn near shot for shot remake. Uninspired, unoriginal and unnecessary. If he were to make it his own, fine I guess. But it was literally shot for shot so much of the way through. Thats a remake that I like but the original was SO much better and unique.

@@phillyvoodoo The step on the loud children's toy near the end was an improvised shot suggested by Kodi Smit -McPhee, which I think was original and interesting, and added to the tension in the scene. Matt Reeves and Kodi talked about some minor stuff like this at the TIFF premiere, which I attended. And I think removing the scene with the cats allowed for slightly better pacing. But yes, I agree the original is better. Keeping the book scene with the zombie corpse creature from the book I think would have fit well into the remake, added to the grossout horror factor, and solidified it as both original and on-par with the first film adaptation. I prefer the original, I think largely because I find it easier to relate to and enjoy characters played by actors that are less known/ completely unknown. Once an actor cements themselves in a role, it takes a lot of work to reinvent themself outside of it. Kodi I knew from The Road and Chloe from Kick-Ass (which admittedly came out only months before Let Me In), so I had a hard time believing them as these characters, who I'd only previously known as their Swedish counterparts. The original, though, suffers from arguably worse cinematography, pacing, and acting, so I think the remake, while worse, is forgivable. I would say the best Americanized remake, IMO, is The Departed, and the vast majority fall short in the broad sense.
@phillyvoodoo

@@benbradbury1044 I agree with everything except the pacing of the original...... I believe it adds to the weirdness of being both strange and unsettling being realistic Sci-fi and the implementation of the age gap of the vamp and human, The sexual ambiguity of the vamp and the sense of other just from being a foreign language film...... The pacing absolutely works for me...... Especially since I had seen Come And See not long before......

I said yes and went inside. Their driver was a big grumpy chinese man. I then got a sack pulled over my head and have been perofrming in Shanghai night clubs ever since. Jk. I really enjoyed the first two acts of the remake. I had a real hard time though with the final act because of the massive changes. It felt like a safe choice rather than a risk like the original. James McAvoy was really great though. No surprise there. To be fair, I might need to revisit the remake. The audience I saw it with was atrocious. Saw this last night and I absolutely loved it. Spot on review… If you watch this and keep thinking 'I would just leave now!' It’s because you are thinking of it as you, an audience member, who knows it’s a horror thriller and you know it’ll escalate and it will end in unimaginable terror for you and your family. But the characters don’t know that. Every bad choice they make is just asking a little more of them than the last bad choice until it’s too late. There’s a great moment when it has escalated and Mcavoy's character is asked why he’s doing this… ‘Because you let me' is his reply. A cautionary tale of being too polite or afraid of an awkward moment to follow your instincts.

I haven't seen the movie but I've seen the Danish original and I just know that this one is going to have that typical "American happy ending" in complete contrast to the original. Europeans simply make more grim and realistic movies, and especially the endings often being so dark and bleak but at the same time a more accurate depiction of what would actually happen in a real life situation and not a "hero or whoever saves the day", and us Europeans are completely fine with it. While Americans cannot deal with reality driven endings and just want our protagonists to step up and win at the end, even if it's not remotely realistic, so that's definitely what I'm expecting going into this Hollywood made remake. But that is why I always praise American productions that have bleak and grim endings to their movies instead of the same old crowd pleasers.
