As a former goalie that made it to the semi professional level, I was absolutely clueless about strength training while playing, the information simply was never given. Having gotten into strength and conditioning for the last decade since my career ended, it’s incredible how perfectly your ideas in this video mirror my own thoughts about how to optimize performance. It’s all about acceleration and coordination at speed, and simply getting the information out to soccer players who are generally not encouraged to train anything but endurance outside of their sport specific training. Loved this video and you could do a whole series education players and coaches. Goalies as LB is perfect except goalies need even less endurance, just explosiveness and coordination from a physical standpoint.

I really enjoyed the video, thank you for posting such a well delivered breakdown of the strength needs for American Football/Football athletes. The positional comparisons between the two Footballs was really interesting, not to mention addressing the different running phases that play a part in what kind of work needs to be done by the athlete to prepare properly for their sport. Keep up the great content!

I had a specific question. I've been following a distance running program because I believe on top of muscular endurance, you should be able to move around the field aerobically with slow twitch muscles. I agree that people should train like 800 meter sprinters during intense days, but also believe you should be adapted and comfortable in running 7 or 8 miles (as a midfielder/winger). I also believe in a buildup to a season, you should gravitate towards shorter, more intense work and allow scrimmages, matches and training to work your "soccer specific fitness". Provided I've built a massive aerobic base and worked muscular endurance and explosiveness, I feel like it would help transfer the best, but obviously I'm not interested in wasting a year of work (covid) just to be out of shape and gas out 60 minutes in.
@maximummomo82103 жыл бұрын
Think about this, how many times do you move at a constant speed for a time of 5 mins or more. Now how many times do preform quick accelerations and quick accelerations. And finally how often do you sprint for 50 meters or more. Yeah the game is a large amount of HIGH INTENSITY efforts with quick INTERVALS , does this sound like any common conditioning method?. So a game is 90mins long so you do need to have the gpp to play for a extended period of time but quick and frequent sprints are more specific for football.
@NotoriousFunk Жыл бұрын
@@maximummomo8210 It mostly depend on the role, I mean strikers, midfields and defenders have to make different jobs, for sure all of them have to run a lot and have to have good ball control. I believe this coach exercises are good but are not specific, in other words I'd never train as a defender if I am going to play as a wing, it's a different job on the field that require a different training. For what I know here in Europe in the big teams they train all together and then a different training for different roles.

Best soccer players are the ones that train with the ball more. Overhead movements for dynamic trunk control is good and all, but the foundation is technique, mobility then injury prevention. Most best players were favela boys playing without shoes, on streets and beach. For a lot of Americans this is incomprehensible since they're used to tests like 40yd and vertical jump.
@GarageStrength3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. We are not discounting sport specific work, only covering the benefits of strength training for improving athleticism for soccer and creating more higher quality players.

@@GarageStrength if you watched gym sessions for real Madrid /or any other top clubs like Chelsea, the top players /starters look quite clueless with the barbell. Take a look. The culture of American sports can work well with soccer but stringing a pass and maintaining ball control in attack and defence is what raises the players stock. Definitely the exercises you shown are good no doubt

@kylemiller56713 жыл бұрын
I don't think you have anything to compare them against though. Historically, you're right. But recently, 2014 Real Madrid were called "athletes, not footballers" because they dominated the game by being more explosive and having more muscular endurance. This past year, Bayern Munich players put on 5lbs average of muscle during the lockdown and came back to dominate the Champions League because of the explosiveness and muscular endurance. Taking this from them, I think this is about maximizing your individual ability through a holistic approach. I'm personally much more afraid of a player that can outrun me than one that has a better touch or more ball control. I.e. Gareth Bale, Killian Mbappe, Theo Walcott, Cristiano Ronaldo, Angel Di Maria, Adama Traore, ect. Obviously very good ball control, but without maximizing their ability to sprint, cut and accelerate, I don't think we would know who they are.

No, any D1 outside linebacker that size can run circles around the best goalies in the world. They are way quicker, stronger and explosive. Obviously, they would just have to grow up around soccer rather than football.

In the recent years, teams like Bayern Munich and Real Madrid have been incorporating such training, leading them to improve their speed and strength. These definitely help players like Vini jr , Bellingham, Rodrygo, who rely on physicality , speed and use a lot of core control while dribbling in tight spaces.
