The main reason scrubbing your legs with soap and a washcloth/loofa is important is to remove dead skin cells in my experience. I was in an accident that left me in hospital with 2 broken legs for 6 weeks then in a Nursing/rehab facility for 6 months. I routinely wiped down with water (I couldn’t shower for 4 of those months because of casts, surgery incisions and bandages) but when I actually was able to really shower again (Albeit on a shower chair) and scrubbed at my body I removed just heaps and heaps of dead skin. Even out of the shower while softened so much would scratch/flake off easily. You can get a big buildup of dead skin cells (which also have other gunk clinging on it) in the parts of yourself that you aren’t scrubbing.
@audreybourgeois4626
@audreybourgeois4626 Жыл бұрын
I totally agree. I never even thought about not scrubbing my legs because to me, the purpose is exfoliation with the loofah. The soap is nice, but I do little physical activity and often wear full length pants, so it isn't like my calves are covered in dirt or sweat. I also broke my leg as a teenager and was unable to wash it for over a month. The dead skin that came off after I was finally able to shower again was unreal and I've been a diligent scrubber ever since.
@fangchick93

When I could finally get my cast removed after my ankle was run over, there was so much dry and peeling skin. It took several long soaks in tubs and exfoliating over a course of weeks to get my legs to the usual texture.

Something to note @thestyletheorists is that you can also track dirt with not just dirt, but also by using an ultraviolet compound. This means that it would show exactly what would have come off or not. We did this with our cooking class to show what washing hands and scrubbing does. Even though you rinsed it off, you could see how much germs/bacteria were left with an ultraviolet light. The difference will be night and day with this type of testing and the results will be drastic.

A note for the future hair washing episode. Thicker hair types use different kinds of conditioners. As a black woman with long, dry hair, I use a leave in conditioner to detangle and contain the remaining natural oils on my hair. So I don't really know how conditioners that wash out work since all of mine are products that are applied after the shower.

The instructions on conditioners that wash out are usually along the lines of "Apply to clean towel dry / moist hair. Leave for 5-15 minutes befofe washing off". What i do (and have noticed many others do as well) is to just squeese most of the water out before using conditioner instead of using a towel in the middle of showering.

Hairdressers child here! Conditioner actually prevents your hair from becoming incredibly oily. Shampoo strips you hair of all its oils, including the natural ones, so before the hair can panic and start producing an abundance of oil to compensate, we use conditioner to bring some form of hydration back to the hair!

Y'all should do a series of hair care theories. Of course Mat doesn't use conditioner, he has short hair. My hair is very long, and the only way to keep the ends from drying out is by using conditioner on the hair that's bellow the ears, letting it sit for a while before lightly washing out the excess. That being said, I also trained my hair to only need to be washed every 10-ish days as long as i don't put extra product in it. It saves me a whole lot of shampoo and conditioner, especially compared to when i washed it every other day.

I would love a series of episodes on haircare! I married a hairstylist who specializes in fantasy hair color, and now my hair is no longer its natural color. It is about shoulder length and to keep it clean I need to shampoo it (single scrub) about every-other day. Since it is bleached, I have to condition it daily, or it gets super dry. I was warned that hair stripped of oil leads to split end and breakages. When my hair was short and natural, I could shampoo daily and get away with conditioning once a week. Maybe an episode on conditioner and/or beard oil?

What surprised me most was the total absence of any _mention_ of detachable shower-heads. Also, my routine involves turning the water off during the soap/shampoo application, and only turning it on for the rinsing; presumably, that would make a fairly major difference as well. (And if anyone's collecting data: for me, it's two rounds of soap (YES to manually washing legs), two rounds of shampoo, one round of conditioner, one round of facial cleanser; and one rinse in between each step, including between repeats and at the beginning and end.)

Maybe hopefully they can revisit this a some later point with the variations of if say you had a detachable shower-head and if that would be the ideal way to get your legs washed, without actually scrubbing them as you can just hose them down, especially with some that can switch streams from a normal pressure to a jet like pressure.

One thing that bothers me about this is it was not confirmed whether the coffee grounds dried on their legs before washing. If it's wet it's way easier to rinse away. And soap becomes less impactful Also. It's fair and well that the dirt is washed off. What about the bacteria on your skin? The handwashing guidelines are like way more involved than the average person's washing techniques and that's been shown to leave microorganisms on your skin.

Okay, another important question I'd love to see answered on here is how _often_ your should shower. You talked about how some soaps cling too well and remove all the oils from your skin, but your skin does still need some oils. This is where the theory that it's healthier to _not_ shower every day comes into play. Personally, I try to shower only every other day (though I might rince down if I got particularly sweaty that day) and find that my skin feels smoother and healthier than back when I did shower every day, but I'm also well aware that that is anecdotal and could just be placebo/confirmation bias.

My brother actually developed a skin condition from showering too often. He's in a physical, sometimes messy job, so he'd have to scrub down thoroughly with soap after every shift. At first we thought he'd developed eczema, it was so bad - especially on his legs! But the doctor just prescribed a cream for the initial recovery of his damaged skin, then had him switch to a gentler soap and told him to moisturize.

As long as the seals are in order, the water pressure is very high and you can spray every part of your body properly and everything will be clean. I only use soap if I've sweated a lot that day or if I've gotten extremely dirty. By the way, the function of surfactants/soap was explained to us in elementary school and we later made our own soap in chemistry lessons.

I feel like the important thing with a video like that would be to include different hair types because curly and kinky hair cannot get as naturally oiled as straight hair due to the hair follicles having a more oval shape. With my curly hair, I have to use a gentle shampoo mostly on my roots because my hair is already naturally dry. Then I need conditioner to lock in the moisture my hair has from the shower water.

When used properly, Conditioner actually slows down oil build up since it works for your scapl instead, meaning your body doesn't have to overproduce in order to keep your head hydrated. That is ESPECIALLY true for my coily/kinky hair types (aka largely black) since it takes longer for the natural oils to travel down our strands, so conditioning is a MUST for soft, hydrated and manageable hair for everyone ☺🚿

My dermatologist actually recommended NOT specifically fully-washing your legs because of excess drying. Rather, you do some mechanical scrubbing to get off the dead skin, but you don't _add_ any more soap than is already on your body from hair and the pits-and-parts. You don't want to totally strip the oils from your skin.

I used to not wash my legs, and I work a pretty labor intensive job, and I ended up developing some fungal issues because I had been neglecting them after I'd been sweating in my socks for several hours. I'm pretty careful to wash my legs and especially my feet and soles while showering, and I haven't had any issues of that type again since I started doing that. So I would like to add that even if it does seem to work, you may still want to wash your legs depending on your lifestyle and habits.

Maybe it's just the videos I've watched, but most of the theory videos doing experiments tend to have... less-than-rigorous testing methods. I get it, the channels are mostly for fun, they have a small team, etc., but in the end most of their testing barely rises to the level of a case study in terms of evidence for or against certain hypotheses. They eliminate a handful of factors, but ignore many other (sometimes very obvious) explanations or confounding factors. If the proof is in the pudding, then these videos might qualify as the milk, or the flavoring, but definitely not the whole shebang. Buuuuuuut they're amusing, and they offer something to consider, so I keep watching anyways. After all, there's still plenty of value in what they do, so I try to take it for what it is.

Team Conditioner! Depending on the type of hair (density and diameter), texture, hair length and condition, conditioner can either be very important or very hindering. Thinner finer hair tends to be weighed down by conditioner (and also all oils) so it's recommended to avoid the roots and scalp. In most cases you should avoid the roots unless you have very dry and damaged hair. So for short hair, conditioner honestly isn't very necessary unless it's dry and damaged. But for longer hair, conditioner is amazing (detangling, hydrating, smoothing etc.) :) Conditioner theory maybe?????

Aside from the oil, another aspect, which Mat only mentioned in a flash near the end, is exfoliation. Your skin might eventually get drier and even slightly hurt if you only rely on water. So, depending on your skin type, you should wash directly more or less often, bc only using creams and stuff to combat the dryness might lead to eventual regrets down the road.
@NWolfsson
@NWolfsson Жыл бұрын
I actually have an issue with my feet, that have unholy amounts of dead skin building up in the friction zones (the heel and the top of the big toe, mainly). My dermatologist gave me an exfoliating cream and a corticoid local treatment (to combat a potential psoriasis-like build of dead skin), which did wonders to get back to a supple and healthy skin, but the main factor that helped the build up actually decrease was that I learned to rub my feet, even passingly, in the shower.

That's a given since the main source of the theory is fundamentally different between them. Game theory and Film Theory have their source laid out already. Shower heads are so different here in Norway. I've never seen any of the types you show here. The ones we have is more circular in the head, diagonal and able to detach from the stand. The last part is important, because when I wash my body, I detach it to spray water everywhere I need it to. This is especially efficient for hard to reach areas for flowing water like under my feet, armpits and you know where.

We have them here in America. I have one in my own bathroom and I hate it lol I like MASSIVE shower heads, even bigger than what was shown here and have lived in places where the head is as wide or bigger than your shoulder length. The detachable ones tend to be really small, so small that you're forced to take it off to reach parts of your body. But when you're standing under a waterfall that covers your whole body, you don't need to do anything else with your hands but scrub.
@JanMaynz
@JanMaynz Жыл бұрын
They definitely exist in Murica, they're just not as popular... for some reason... but I HATE using anything but those detachable ones. I take it down while the water warms up so there's less splash, put it back up as I get in, I can adjust the angle for ideal spray, pull it down again to get a real close spray on certain areas, it's great for shaving my legs because I can step out from under the water to shave, rinse the razor as needed, and then pull it down to rinse my legs and check for any missed hairs. As someone with facial sensory issues, it's especially lovely for ensuring the angle doesn't get water on my face... as easily, at least. Meanwhile overhead would be almost impossible, and while stationary diagonal might be possible, it'd be a lot tougher.

@@KamikaziiKidd I can't do something like that. I got aquaphobia and might panic if I don't have control of the water flow. Something that big pouring water straight down on me might give me a severe panic attack as I will feel there's no way to escape it.

@@donutchan8114 given that the argument online is, "the water running down your body cleans your legs," and the entire premise of the video was, "do your legs get clean without washing them," appearance is not "the main reason someone would want to make the effort." The point is, soapy water running down your body does not get your legs clean. CleanER than when you got into the shower doesn't mean "clean," and this video only proved that. The fact that there was _any_ residue left on the unwashed legs shows that the hypothesis is busted. As others have pointed out, the true deciding factor would have been to swab the legs, and take a microscopic look at the results.

Matpat. Conditioner is NOT useless. You have to replace the oils lost by the shampoo. This is more important with certain hair types but as somebody with long hair, if I don’t condition my hair will feel dry instead of silky smooth. I don’t understand your logic here. Also the reason you have to wait a bit before washing off the conditioner is because the oils need to soak into your hair.

I wouldnt. That stuff REALLY removes oils. Ive used it in dog grooming for chronic oils and things like water foul poop that animals love to rub in. The poop is water resilliant and resists many soaps and only dawn would remove it but man did we have to be sure to condition after cause it could make things brittle, chapped, and irritated by air and heat quickly. Its meant for removing legit oil and microbes not as an everyday preventative care.

My luscious fantastic hair also does not seem to mind and I do not use any conditioners. I'm sure it's a lot like allergies where every single person he's going to be potentially affected differently. I feel like when it comes to removing oils it's a 0 or 1 situation.
