Home without walls…priceless!! Love these two Docs!! I’m almost 3 months out from my left total knee replacement… I’ve been going to physical therapy and they have me almost at 110°. It does get a lot easier though.

I’ll be 12 weeks out from my R TKA this Wednesday, and I am doing well….moving and exercises is everything!!! I was at PT post op day one and I have never missed a day of exercises!

Had a discussion the other day with a couple of friends. Most orthopaedic surgeons want patients to do physio as a pre-op and again for post-op. A friend did this with both hip replacements and managed extremely well after surgery. She was even put gardening again about 8 weeks after 2nd surgery. It’s like she never had hip pain or difficulties previously. I feel this is important to do especially if the patient is extremely overweight. 😊❤️🇨🇦

when i had it done 2 years ago, they said no need to go to PT can do it all online - well when i had my first f/u phone call from the nurse asking me what the current angle my knee was bending at - i was on the couch with my leg up watching star wars and i remember saying -wait - it's supposed to bend????oh no it doesn't bend - much too painful anyway - long story short - i asked for a PT script = and all was good - for me - i wasn't about do anything that painful - i needed encouragement and help - and the ice wraps at the end are very nice - i highly recommend going to PT - its worth it.

Another reason for going to the therapy center is all the equipment they have. Like stationary bikes. Everybody warms up on bikes. For those of us with hips it wasn't hard, but for some of the knee people the therapist would get hands-on to help the patient actually get movement in their knees. And of course leg press machines, weights, stretchy things, boxes to step up and down on of varying heights... Oh, and take pain pills if you need them, The physio is so important that you need to "press through".

24 years ago I really injured my knee. The surgeon said it was the second worst he'd ever seen. Surgery (no TKR), six weeks in a full leg cast, then I went to physical therapy for a few weeks. We tried really painfully hard, but we only got a few degrees of movement. So, I went back to the operating room for "Manipulation under anesthesia."" That fixed my range of motion.

Hi! Great exercises for bending the new knee but I learned from having knee replacement that achieving straight leg is more difficult than bending it. How about showing your favorite straight leg exercises. Always appreciate the knowledge you share with us. Thanks.

Both of those are good ones. I have had 2 TKRs within the last 12 months. My 2nd one is now 5 months po. I started outpatient PT on po day 2. Both my surgeon and PT were excellent. I did home exercises on my own each day and PT twice a week for 8 wks. At the end of wk 2 my flexion was 120 and extension was 0. I am 73 and they couldn’t believe how good I did. But I did prehab at home and the night of surgery I started bending my knee back on the floor while sitting. I got it to 95. That’s where I started with PT. It’s all in the attitude, the skill of the surgeon and PT and the time you devote to it. I found stair lunges to be the best for increasing flexion. I also used an ice machine to get rid of the swelling which was gone in 2 wks.

Yup, exercise is so important under a physio’s care. I am about 11 weeks out from my second TKR. It has been bumpy due to trouble with pain control however kept following instructions given, cried and felt sorry for myself …. Then exercised some more. Graduated from 1:1 Physio a week ago and starting a group Physio class later this week. Love the team I have to support me !

I used a towel around my ankle while lying down, worked for me and yes very painful but very necessary. Then once I went walking outside I used the low bar at the top of a set of stairs on my street, back to the bar and put my the top of my foot up on the bar and gently pressed back and down. I made tremendous progress with this one. It definitely takes time.

I’m only 11 days post-op. I have never been in so much pain in my entire life. Mind you I’ve been having this knee issue for 4 years along with four prior surgeries but nothing compares to this. During my first week they were already talking about having a manipulation, but today my physical therapy went well and I try to do anything extra that will help me with bending. Thank you guys!

One of the things my ortho doc said was not to avoid the pain meds for at least a week. I'm not one for taking meds but after hearing this ffrom both a leg guy and a shoulder guy, I'm inclined to believer them. Good luck!

Looking forward to trying these. I’m on day 9 since my TKR and had a rough time doing exercises the first 4-5 days because of swelling and pain. As a result I think I’m already stiffing up and now that the pain has subsided a bit these should help me get back closer to where I probably should be. Thanks Dr’s.

Thank you for your advice. Do you have exercise suggestions for stiff knees, hips? If I sit too long, not even that long, my knees are so stiff upon standing. While walking I have few issues.

Although out of favour these days I feel that renting a CPM was helpful. I’ve had a lot of surgeries on my knee over 30 years and the machine helped a lot. However when I had a LTKA, I was told they didn’t prescribe them anymore. I was so behind not having one as any gains I made during the day were lost at night. I had a MUA and insisted that they prescribe one for me. I made better gains when I had it for 3 months but gradually lost ROM after I had to give it back. I did the exercises diligently and worked with 2 PTs (one for modalities and one for exercises) for months after the CPM to no progress. 5 years later and I’m 80-85 flexion. Stairs are difficult and getting in and out of a car is a challenge. When I get the LTKA done again, I may just buy the machine.

I lie on my bed with my butt about two feet out from the headboard both legs straight up resting vertically against the wall/headboard Then I use gravity to let my operative leg drop and my non-operative leg as safety support. This has helped add more flexion relatively quickly as long as swelling is not too bad

Wondering why you use clips instead of glue for the closure of the incision? Unless I am confusing clips with something else? I’m in the US and had mine done 2 years ago and they use glue. It was awesome!
