Today, Jason and Sage head out of Snyder on their way home. But they only make it about 150 miles. Temperature woes and a breakdown create a disappointing day.

This escapade will either cement your friendship or blow it apart. I hope for the former. You both are sure doing it hard. As usual, excellent accompanying music.

The door latches were the same way on our silversides. They were very stuck. I guess I took a complete day or more freeing up the latches on everything. Good thing there wasn't any mail boxes at 2:27 !!!LOL!!! I couldn't resist Sage!!! Can't wait to see the rest of the trip.

This is certainly quite the adventure and nice work thus far. I'm curious though as to why maintenance items such as the fan, belts, water pump and radiator were not replaced before embarking on such a long voyage. Those parts no doubt were ancient to begin with and driving in that Texas heat only exacerbated their demise.

Sage, you're a brave and adventurous man. I admire your tenacity. Having said that, the old Silversides looks great when it's moving! Good luck! (Don't know anyone with a big flatbed do you?) I like the music and the quality of your video. Good job! Ignore the criticisms. Can't people just be nice!!!!!

If memory serves correctly. BGM had a rescue that broke down many times on it's trip. Something like 16 hours to go 40 miles. However, I'm old so memories are sometimes manufactured out of bits of reality into something that makes sense to me. I'm super happy that you have made it this far. All the best, RML

This is the stuff interesting memories are made of. It it was easy and uneventful it would just be forgetful and boring.

Not a bad soundtrack to open with, I chuckled at the banjo's. Even though I know you guys got through this part alright the despair and heat still kinda hit me a bit. The enormity and responsibility of getting the old girl home would be pretty hardcore and having shuttled a few buses from Northern Australia 3 or 4 thousand km home for people who either didnt have the right license or just didnt want the stress I understand the responsibility well enough. Weirdly the best run I did was an old 50's Leyland Bus that was flat out at 45 Mph and took a solid 10 days from Townsville to a collector in Adelaide 2800 Km (1720 ish Miles) mostly in temps around 100/110 f and zero gauges bar Gearbox temp and speedo but the radiator was out front and I could watch the mercury thermometer in the rad cap which was constantly on the boil due to blocked tubes.......... I ended up doing a citrus flush 500 km down the road and a reverse flush have me a gallon bucket half full of scale, crud and a green/yellow goop identified as stuff we call Bars leaks. Pre digital image recording which was probably just as well because the language was blue as blue could be referring to the Diesel Mechanic that had supposedly serviced this old girl and given her a clean bill of health. And heres the kicker, a 50's Leyland is probably equivalent to a 30's US bus, way underpowered, inherently lousy brakes (Vacuum I think) and a truck chassis with a bus body as Aussie buses all were until the late 1970's lol The gotta get it home factor was huge and even though it wasnt mine I felt a responsibility and it weighed heavy enough to ensure I got the job done.

When trying to work the rusty bolts out of a nut apply a little silver antisieze to the back side each time you tighten them back. This will work it into the Nu as you loosen. Roadside picnic areas bring back memories.

If possible get one of those hand pumps that you can pressurize the cooling system with, much easier to find the leak then.

I wonder The belts that you are using B42 sound tome as being fractional HP. If so they are not automotive. They are used for compressor and saws run in shops. I may be wrong but there is a-b-c- series. And the 42 is length.

Also when you park your bus angle it so that as the sun sets you are working in the shade. Watching this just seems like you keep setting yourselves up for failure. Not changing the belts, not changing the temp gauge, waiting until it gets hot outside to start the day. All of these factors are making this journey more difficult IMO from the comfort of my keyboard of course I can say this 🤣

It doesn’t matter where we sit, computer or otherwise. I’ve watched most of this series and it’s a fact that most of the trouble and frustration is self inflicted. Rusty is on the nose when he describes some of the little but crucial repairs that should have been finished before departure. The logic is simple: you want a reliable trip in an ancient, abandoned vehicle? Then fix everything before you leave! 20 year old belts? Useless temp gauge on an overheat-prone engine? Why would anyone be surprised you’re having trouble? I wouldn’t drive another 100 yards without finishing all the necessary preventative maintenance. These buses ran in the Texas heat in the 1940s. Is the radiator plugged with junk? Is the variable pitch fan working? Bet the blades are pitched flat.

Sage ,,, You are going to have a serious accident one day in the future , Especially if you don't correct your bad driving habits of cutting corners on right hand turns !! Also you need to learn to drive the vehicle in towards the centre of the road or keep to the left of the line in the right hand side of the road !! Please correct these driving slipups before you have and accident or even worse , that you run into another vechile and end up hurting somebody !!
