10:34 Actually, you can get the diesel engine option on lower trim versions of the Suburban and Tahoe as well on LS, LT, RST, and Premier, with the exception of the Z71 (Mostly due to its unique front fascia that prevents proper air flow to the diesel for cooling.) I’m really eager to see the diesel powered version of one of General Motors’ new SUVs tow in the real world for the first time. @@bryanhersman4037 I mean, 1,350 pounds of payload minus the 650 for tongue weight on the 6,500 pound trailer leaves you 700 pounds of payload. 2 adults at 175 pounds a piece is 350 pounds, 3-4 small kids at 100 pounds or less and you're right on target. Going over a hundred pounds or 200 pounds really isn't going to matter. I'd say the numbers work out pretty good, and also remembering this is on a fully loaded unit, on a less loaded one you'll probably gain a couple hundred pounds of payload. The problem with a Silverado is you only have 5 seats, maybe 6 if you get a bench in the front but it's not very comfortable. Most people don't have a family of 8, but a lot of people have 3-4 kids but cramping them all in the back seat of a truck isn't that much fun on a long road trip. With this Tahoe everyone can get a window seat and not sit in the middle, if there's only 3 kids someone can sleep in the 3rd row, you can get 2 TV's in them, and you have a trunk for a suitcase that's secured and isn't an open truck bed. Plus, for the 98% of the other driving it won't be towing and you can seat 8 people in it and use it to go get groceries and what not without it being a truck.

@@bryanhersman4037 But loading eight passengers and NOT towing (or towing without a max load of passengers) is what plenty of people will do with that vehicle. Maybe the Tahoe doesn't do both together very well but honestly I don't see it being called upon to perform your scenario very often.

It's impressive! Downside is that it's twice as expensive and requires a belt service like a timing belt - but on the back, so you have to remove the engine to access or pull the transmission out the bottom every 150k miles. So a lot of the fuel savings get eaten up by extra maintenance costs. And that sucks. Without that major design fail - it would be a fantastic engine.

Andre, my guess is you had an issue with foaming on the top off after the towing loop as the trip computer first under estimated fuel economy on the tow loop, then over estimated on the highway loop. If we look at the additional fuel that should have gone in after the tow loop based on the trip computer, it comes out to 0.2 gallons. Subtract 0.2 from the fill up after the empty run and it works out to 30.3 mpg empty, much closer to the trip computer. I think with the diesel vehicles you need longer mpg loops to take into account errors due to fuel foaming on fill up.

The good thing about Tahoes (and Suburbans) is GM sold a ton of them making repair parts reasonably priced and plentiful many years later. But these new ones are so costly that GM isn't going to sell that many of them, especially the diesels, so it is going to be hard to get parts to keep them up with all the fallible features (like adaptive cruise) that have been added.

They make lots of them. they just don't sell them in the United States unfortunately. They are not clean enough for our emissions standards. Toyota said a few years ago that it would cost approximately $8,000 per vehicle more in sale price to justify a diesel engine emissions setup. And that for almost any driver, the extra cost could not be justified in fuel savings. Supposedly the new tundra hybrid will get very close to 30 mpg. if that's the case and it's also more powerful and cheaper than the diesel option, I think that will be a winner. I love the idea of this new GM inline six diesel, but it has some very poor internal engineering. The oil pump is mounted on the back of the engine and uses a belt to drive it. And that belt has to be replaced at about 100,000 mi. The way that they designed that system requires the engine to be removed in order to do the belt swap because you have to separate the transmission from the engine to remove or install the belt. I cannot figure out why you would design such a stupid system. But what that means is these GM diesels are going to require about a $3,000 belt change at 100,000 mi. That's just stupid.

I crafted a "V-nose" mod for the trailer and lowered my speed to 65 and brought the mpg up to 13.3 empty. Aero drag is CRAAAAAZY when you get over 55 with any kind of enclosed trailer. I knew going in that it'd hurt my mpg but I didn't know it would cut it IN HALF.

Here in 🇵🇷 Puerto Rico diesel fuel is cheaper than gasoline, and 90% of our stations do not have ethanol in their Gasoline which is nice. I've considered putting my 2-door 95 GMC 6.5 turbo diesel 4x4 SLT Z-71 Yukon on a boat and bringing it down here from the mainland, but maybe I'll sell that to a collector and buy one of these.

I tow over 300 days of the year so I can justify my Duramax and with the added complexity of the new diesels I'm trading in every 5-6 years. Nice thing about a diesel is they hold their value, on my 2014 GMC Sierra with the Duramax I only lost $12k in value after a little over 5 years of ownership. I had it paid off and when I traded in for my new GMC Sierra Denali HD with the Duramax it was nice to have such a big chunk of that new loan paid off from my trade value.

@@OneNationUnderGod. I am not 100 percent on the trade in value argument. I have owned diesels two of last three trucks You get more for trade in but we are paying 10k more when we buy them. I bought my 17 ram for 64000 traded it in in 18 for 49. If we keep them 5 years math works better. But we are only getting the money we paid back. But if we need them we need them i agree with that. I tow a 8500 lb travel trailer prob 8 weekends a summer i tow a tractor and skid steer prob 2 times a month rest is snow mobiles quads dump trailer. Diesel does it better for sure. But a 7.3 with 4.30 would do all of that just fine. I have a 1990 bronco 5.0 that if it doesnt run needs a batter. I should also add I've been buying my GM pickups as the new model is coming out and the current model is nicely discounted, my new $2019 GMC Sierra Denali HD had an MSRP of $75k and I bought it for $65k. If I had waited one more month I could have probably gotten a better deal but I really wanted the Red Quartz paint color and the one I bought was the last one in Colorado with all the options I wanted. WHY is there not a diesel hybrid out there? That sounds like both an MPG and performance marriage made in heaven. Also, why do you not use the actual odometer mileage when calculating against the fuel used? I'm curious. Also, do you do cost comparisons? I have a 2021 GMC Denali with the 3.0 duramax. I love my truck all around especially since I’m averaging 28-29 City and 35-36mpg on the highway with it. I have about 5900 miles on it. The main problem with my truck is that, it has done a long crank no start four times in the eight months that I’ve owned it. Apparently this is happening to the 2019-2021 models so this has been going on long enough for GMC to do a recall on these. I also have researched where it could take 50 hours to fix and by lifting the entire cab off of the vehicle. I really hope that TFL looks into this to see what can be done? Thanks.

Some Questions: What is the impact of the higher elevation on the mpg and performance of the diesel? What is the explanation for the difference in the computer mileage versus the calculation results? How much DEF can we expect to use per mile? No one seems to add that cost to run the engine, but it must be considered when deciding whether to go with a gas or diesel engine. Is there an impact to mpg due to seasonal fuels?
@cheezuscrust7730
@cheezuscrust7730 2 жыл бұрын
The computer will detect less oxygen in the cylinders due to high elevation and inject more diesel into the cylinders to make up for the loss of oxygen. Winter and summer diesel only differentiate in the amount of paraffin in the fuel.

The fuel economy is great but it will take some time and a lot of driving to mitigate the extra price the diesel costs to both purchase and maintain. The unfortunate thing with newer diesels are the DEF, DPF and EGR systems which are very failure prone in them. Add in having to drive longer so the emission system can regen plus didn't a GM engineer say that the engine's timing chain which is in the back and the oil pump is driven by a wet belt that requires replacement but of course the transmission needs to come out... Yeah just get the 5.3 or 6.2 because at least the DFI issues are easily sorted with a carbon cleaning.
@courtneyanderson2293
@courtneyanderson2293 2 жыл бұрын
Extra price? There is no difference in cost between the 3.0 and 6.2. I have 2 Yukon XLs with the 6.2l and the 3.0 Caddy is coming in the next week or so. I run 60,000+ miles on them in a year and fully expect my fuel bill to drop around $5500 a year. Oil pump belt will probably run 200,000 miles without issue and the moment it fails the dash lights up and you shut it off. I expect to change it once or twice in the next 5-8 years and it will owe me nothing.
